We all struggle at times in our lives. Perhaps the root of that suffering is clear: a loss, a trauma, a life transition, or an illness. Sometimes the suffering is known; we know we feel anxious or depressed, but we are unsure of the cause. Perhaps we know in our hearts we are repeating patterns in relationships, work, behaviors or lifestyle that no longer serve us, yet we can't quite get unstuck. As a psychotherapist I guide my clients in a collaborative way to a place of connection, understanding, integration and growth.

You’re experiencing a lot of doubt about yourself, your work, your relationships, your parenting- everything-but this isn't who you want to be. You can keep it at bay if you stay busy but come bedtime, your head hits the pillow, and your mind is racing and you’re wide awake because your anxiety caught you again! It is exhausting living with anxiety! I work with adults like you who experience a variety of anxiety related issues.

I work with people dealing with the struggles that come from living and growing. Many of my clients are dealing with life transitions, relationship problems, grief, stress, anxiety or trauma. They may have noticed patterns in their life they want to change. All of them want to feel better, to function better, and to understand themselves better. You do not need a diagnosis to work with me. However, if you have been diagnosed with a mental health issue, or are interested in being diagnosed, we can work together to identify and understand your struggles. You will create the goals that define the work we do together.

Generally, it is discomfort that brings us into therapy. Discomfort (anxiety, depression, stress) is borne of an almost limitless array of life circumstances: challenging relationships, problematic perceptions of self, coping with life/work stressors, and the uncertainties we are all facing in today’s world. This universal condition of discomfort, as one famous therapist said; finds us “in the soup together.” As a consequence of our shared humanity, it is in relationship that we humans most commonly find the opportunity for deepened self-understanding and abiding change.

I believe that human growth occurs in a relational context, and we all have the ability to envision a better life and create our own solutions. To me, counseling is a collaborative process in which clients and I join to discover possibilities, set achievable goals, and follow the chosen path together. I provide a safe space for clients to explore their challenges, gain insight into underlying needs, consider effective ways to meet those needs, and acquire whatever tools they need to strengthen important relationships.

There are many powerful tools available to help individuals, couples, and families achieve meaningful, positive change in their lives. As a psychologist in clinical practice for over 25 years, I am vitally engaged in the process of integrating a broad range of therapeutic practices to meet the unique needs of each client. Effective psychotherapy can be of great assistance in negotiating the complexities of modern human existence. Engaging mind, heart, and intuition, it is a process that may become an "adventure of the Soul" imparting profound benefit beyond the alleviation of symptoms.

I believe that lasting healing and change can, and do occur at a very deep level. Although you may feel stuck or even hopeless in some or many areas of your life, it doesn't have to stay that way. I offer a safe, non-judgmental counseling and therapy environment to relieve feelings such as anxiety and depression, grief and loss, and emotions related to physical challenges, and aging. I also offer you support with issues such as life transitions and spiritual concerns. You may be surprised to recognize strengths that you already have to help you in this process.

I am a relational therapist working with individuals, couples, and those in non-traditional relationships. Seeking support from psychotherapy is a sign of inner strength and hope, even when it feels as if ones world has turned inside-out. Life rarely allows any of us a free pass; births and deaths, personal crises, relationship troubles, childhood trauma, etc. may meet any one of us head-on at sometime during our lives. Seeking help from psychotherapy is a worthwhile path to take when ways of coping no longer seem effective. I nurture the possibility of deeper understanding and self-knowledge by creatively engaging the whole person.

Over the last 13 years I have had the opportunity to work in an array of mental health positions, primarily in the school setting, so the majority of my experience is with children 6-18. Relationship building is the foundation of a great counseling partnership and I greatly value the courage and authenticity it requires to participate in that work. My specialties include support and interventions/behavior modification for anxiety, depression, stress, ADHD, family conflict and peer struggles. I would love to support families with school collaboration in the IEP/504 creation

Currently accepting NEW clients! Whether the result of traumatic events, family dynamics, life transitions, or the stress of being a human, anxiety presents itself for these and other reasons, and it can feel overwhelming. Not knowing what to do, how to address it, or why it shows up can make us feel like we’re adrift without a paddle. Often, we think that we’re broken or that we need fixing. The truth is that we’re not broken, and anxiety is showing up to tell us that something needs our attention. Finding the answers to these questions can be challenging, and this is where therapy can be helpful.

How can I find a therapist in Brunswick?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
