Talk therapy works, but finding a therapist can be daunting. I offer free initial consultations to help you determine if we are a good fit and to point you in the right direction. I'm Dr. Paul Hiatt, a clinical psychologist, which means I have doctoral-level expertise in the comprehensive assessment and non-medication based treatment of mental health problems. I have particular interest in working with LGBT individuals. Clients tell me they feel supported, relaxed and comfortable opening up with me, providing significant relief in the short-term and facilitating change in the long-term.

As a queer transgender man myself, I understand the intricacies of seeking mental health care as an LGBTQ+ individual.
My goal is to help those in the LGBTQ+ community navigate the social and personal challenges of gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as co-occurring mental health symptoms that they may be experiencing. I provide a safe therapeutic environment to meet the unique needs of this community. I have experience working with those of varying gender identities, sexual orientations, as well as varying non-monogamous relationship orientations. I also have experience working with individuals preparing for or receiving gender affirming medical care.

You are a complex and nuanced hu man, designed for wholeness, beauty and truth. However, few of us experience this freedom. Suffering in the world is real and you have your own story and experience with it. You have questions, fears, and anxieties about today and tomorrow. You have grief, shame, pain, and loss from your past. Your pain is real, your losses hurt, even when they don’t make sense. And, if you’re like the majority of people, you likely have nobody who knows your pain or will walk through the depths of it with you. We want to hold your burden and suffering with you as you look into your life and its brokenness.

Welcome! I believe everyone has the potential to be who they want to be, but sometimes, we need support to navigate life's challenges. I'm here to offer a safe, supportive space to help you move toward your goals. I'm an active and engaged therapist, using humor and metaphor in my work. As a cis queer man from the evangelical South, I understand the intersectionality of power and privilege affecting marginalized identities. My training is rooted in social justice and I recognize power dynamics can also be at play in the therapy room. I believe in equality for everyone but recognize society doesn't reflect this.

The goal of IPC is to provide a focused and robust support system for mothers to manage their immediate high-acuity postpartum needs effectively, while also laying a foundation for progressive care that adapts to their evolving health needs over time.
Less than half (41%) of mothers feel they have enough support during the postpartum period. At Materna Health, we recognize the urgent need for more focused support during this critical period. Our treatment programs, including our Virtual Intensive Postpartum Care (IPC), are designed to provide personalized and flexible care tailored to the unique needs of each mother.

This can mean learning how to manage difficult moments, gaining self-knowledge, searching for meaning, healing from old wounds, or journeying towards a more authentic, fully-formed version of yourself.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with 15 years of experience. Currently, I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, grief and loss, life transitions, relationship problems, meaninglessness, and the residual impacts of past traumas. I do my best to acknowledge the many ways in which social, cultural, and economic inequities shape how we understand ourselves and interact with the world.

Are you in your 20's and having difficulty coping with the complexities of life? Therapy is an amazingly powerful tool to create tangible change in young people's lives, but it is important to find a relatable therapist who doesn't treat 18-30 year olds with the same frames and modalities that are used for younger kids or their parents. I am a licensed LCSW who has been working with young adults in schools and in private practice for almost 20 years. My entire career is focused on helping young adults and their families through life's biggest challenges.

Are you struggling with stress, anxiety, self-image/identity/esteem, relational issues, or just general feelings of sadness? Are you looking for a therapist who has a sense of humor and will still make you feel understood. I'm not that stoic, serious therapist you've traditionally seen portrayed in movies. I smile, I laugh, I frown, I may even gasp (insert gasp!). But I'll do my best to always make you feel safe and supported. I'm just another hu man who, like you, is looking to learn, connect, and grow. I believe in taking a down-to-earth, relatable approach to therapy, providing a new perspective while collaborating with you.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist located near Rittenhouse Square. While I have experience with a wide range of issues, I am especially skilled in working with depression, anxiety, loneliness, loss, shame, and sexual and gender identity concerns. My approach to treatment is relational and psychodynamic. This means that I strive to maintain a strong focus on the relationship—both the therapeutic and real, hu man relationship—between the client and me. To this end, I believe that the therapeutic relationship is itself a powerful agent for change and can serve as a foundation for addressing numerous real-world problems.

My family is my greatest joy and gives me a unique perspective on balancing personal and professional life, which many of my clients face.
Speaking from my own experiences, finding the right therapist can be tough, so I commend you for being here. Whether you’re navigating life’s challenges, seeking personal growth, or simply need someone to listen, you’ve already shown strength by taking this first step. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years as a mainstream radio and media personality. This experience allowed me to connect with diverse audiences and deepened my commitment to advocating for marginalized and underserved communities. I bring this dedication into my practice, creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all my clients.

Therapy is a journey of self-exploration, and my role on that journey is to listen, to accept you as you are, and to walk with you toward a more authentic and rewarding life. My presence is warm and calm, and my approach to therapy is hu manistic, meaning that, above all else, I value building a genuine, hu man connection with you. It is through the comfort of this connection that we will safely and holistically explore what it’s like to be you. Along the way, I will help you to deepen your self-awareness and process your emotions, and I will help you feel empowered to move forward in ways that feel true and right for you.

I am passionate about helping adults of all ages navigate the transitions in their lives, approaching my work from the perspective that all of us are seeking to realize our full potential. I help clients find solutions to what’s blocking their path and compromising their joy. I have been successful in helping people, including those in the LGBTQ+ community, who are struggling to find their sense of identity as they seek to recover from the trauma of invalidating families and cultures. I help couples break their cycle of defensive communication to experience the rewards of emotional intimacy.

I obtained my master’s degree in Trauma Counseling from Thomas Jefferson University and as a therapist I am glad I did because many people have been dealing with generational trauma especially in the black community.
Life's a bitch and then you die. For many of us, this is not just a hook to a classic song but a "fact of life". And if you are reading this, chances are this feeling applies to you. And there are so many factors play a part in why life is so hard. In my time as a therapist, I have had so many emerging adults(18-25) reach out to me with feelings of anxiety and depression about their current lives and the feeling of hopelessness about their future. And trust me, I get it because I was that emerging adult many, many years ago. It may not be "life" that's a bitch, but just past or present moments that we currently struggle with.

Are you tired of showing up in spaces only to be "othered" or have assumptions be made about you because of how you look? I get it because I've been there and this is something I still experience to this day. Whether you are Black, POC, or LGBTQIA+, there is space for you in this world and I am here to remind you that you can take up space. As a queer black man, therapy was never advertised to me or those who looked like me. I had to tackle the intersections of my identity on my own and it was lonely.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist who believes that everyone needs options when managing their problems. Through the safety of a trusting relationship, I work with a wide array of clients (older adolescents, college students, and adults) in tackling various targeted life issues. I believe that practical coping skills combined with a journey towards a more in-depth understanding of your problems ultimately leads to longer-term success. Together, you and I will review and determine problem areas, discover and explore attainable and healthy choices, and develop a plan to implement changes to meet your goals.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
