I am here, for you. You are not alone! At this point in my career, I do not have an ideal client. I hope my future does not hold a picture of an ideal client. I only hope you are willing to develop a mutual relationship based on understanding, compassion, honesty and effort. I am here as an evolving professional and moreover, an evolving and ever-changing hu man being. I am here in this role to learn from you as much as you are here to learn from me. In order for you to be your best, I promise to bring my best self to every moment that we share. As Richard Alpert said, "The art of a Therapist is the work on oneself."

Depression/anxiety, addiction/substance abuse, conflict in interpersonal relationships (including Collaborative Law Process), athletics/sports & other mental-health related issues are often signs of the destructive and dysfunctional ways individuals/families cope with life's stressors and anxieties. The goal is to devise a customized treatment plan that will weaken or eliminate the patterns, cycles, and habits that keep the individual/family from living a more successful, productive, and emotionally fulfilling life. Dr. Kevin Wickes has written numerous articles for professional journals, and has presented at national conferences.

Life transitions and stressors cause us to re-examine our present sense of being. Overwhelming emotions, thoughts, and feelings can get the best of us. We get lost in our thoughts, creating feelings of resentment, anxiety, depression, and overall defeat. This cyclic thought process impacts the quality of our lives and overflows into other meaningful relationships we care about, such as our spouses, friends, family, co-workers, and children. My role in this therapeutic relationship is to help you reach your true potential by discovering a sense of acceptance, contentment, and freedom from issues that have previously kept you stagnant

I entered the counseling profession to support individuals who are having difficulties facing life’s challenges. I have found that many people struggle because they have created unrealistic expectations about the support, relationships, and encouragement they need. I believe that as hu manity becomes “busier,” life becomes more complicated, affecting relationships and how we see ourselves fitting in the world. Life is often full of difficult and complicated experiences that are difficult to overcome, especially without support. Ultimately, these difficulties distract us from pursuing what enriches our lives.

It's often difficult dealing with the many challenges we face without help.
My road to becoming a mental health provider has been quite the journey. I served over 27 years as an active duty Soldier in the Army with multiple combat deployments. Durning my military service, I discovered that I loved helping people get through tough places in their lives. Today, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Columbia, SC. Since earning a Masters Degree in Professional Counseling from South University in 2014, I have counseled for the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program Counseling, Anderson Counseling and Education, the South Carolina Department of Corrections and Better Help.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
