When buying gifts for children, it’s often a gamble between managing to choose an item they’ll love to play with and use and something that will sit unused, collecting dust in a corner. To ensure you choose the best children’s gift, we sought expert advice from Stephanie Ryan, CEO and Owner of Ryan Education Consulting LLC, and Amanda Vierheller, COO and Co-Founder of Playgarden.

“The main factors to keep in mind when shopping for gifts for kids are the child's current interests, developmental level, and the purpose of the gift,” Vierheller says. “Look for a toy that is age-appropriate to keep little ones engaged. Toys that inspire children's creativity and invite imaginative play can help promote social, emotional, and cognitive development. Many of the best gifts for kids are toys that encourage open-ended play and provide a variety of ways to grow and learn.”

Vierheller also says that children's books are always a wonderful gift choice. “By inscribing them with a personal message, you can ensure that the child always feels loved by you when reading,” she says.

For gift-giving success, and to make sure you’re not wasting your money on something that will get forgotten about after one play session, Ryan suggests testing the toy out first. “If their friend/school/library has it, try it out,” she advises. “Walk them through the toy aisle and see if it jumps out at them,” Ryan says, emphasizing the fact that their preferences are most important here. “Just because you think a gift is cool, that does not mean your child will,” she adds.

In all cases, Vierheller says, “Whether the gift is just for fun, has an educational focus, or is for indoor or outdoor play, toys should be safe and, whenever possible, made from sustainable products.”

Taking inspiration from “Where’s Waldo,” this “Custom Search & Find Adventure Book” by Uncommon Goods lets your child be the main character of their own book. The cover features the child’s own name, and they, in effect, have to search for themselves within its 26 colorful and vibrant pages. Parents can choose from either a world trip or European trip as the location setting and create a little avatar that resembles them; you can choose everything from its hair, clothes, and skin color, and children get to “see themselves” near famous landmarks like the Great Barrier Reef, or Stonehenge in England.

This LEGO set includes over 480 bricks in 35 different colors, allowing children to build an array of objects, from cars and trucks to plants and animals. In addition to bricks, this set also includes a baseplate, tires, wheel rims, and toy eyes for children to really delve into their imagination and create anything they envision. Since LEGOs are cross-compatible, children can use these bricks with any other LEGO sets they already have. Parents will also appreciate that the set comes in a large box to keep all the pieces in—we know how painful it can be to accidentally step on a lone lego.

Questions You Might Ask

What is the best gift to give a toddler?

Toddlers notoriously have quite low attention spans, so the gift you buy for them, whether it’s for Christmas, their birthday, Easter, Valentine’s Day, or any other occasion, needs to grasp their interest and motivate them to want to play with it. To choose a gift for a toddler, Stephanie Ryan, CEO and Owner of Ryan Education Consulting LLC, advises considering the particular tot in question. “What is their attention span? Do they like to pretend or play independently? There isn't really the best toy, there is the best type of toy for a particular toddler,” she says.

For a toddler, building blocks with a twist, like Periodic Table Building Blocks, will keep them safely busy and entertained, while also growing their motor skills. The VTech Rock & Bop Music Player or the Fisher Price Classic Record Player are also much-loved choices for littler ones for an interactive toy.

Instead of material items, Amanda Vierheller, COO and Co-Founder of Playgarden Online, suggests providing children with memories that last forever. “When possible, parents and family members can choose to give meaningful experiences,” she says. “Taking pictures along the way and creating a custom book is a fantastic way to give children a keepsake item that will last forever.”

Toy cameras like the Agoigo Kids Waterproof Camera take surprisingly great footage and are built to withstand falls and drops, perfect in the hands of a little one. “Children love looking at pictures of themselves and loved ones,” Vierheller says. “A personalized book filled with photos of a special event is another present that will be cherished for a lifetime.”

What are the most trendy gifts for kids right now?

“STEM toys are in right now,” Ryan tells us, but warns that some companies just slap the term “STEM” on an item to market it to hopeful parents. “Listen to experts and watch videos on Instagram and TikTok of kids and parents actually using the items and read the reviews,” she advises.

Vierheller also adds that “toys that encourage kids to explore feelings, practice communication, and build independence are continuing to increase in popularity, and are integral in helping young children to grow positive mindsets.” These skills will also allow them to connect with others—especially parents—to grow strong, healthy relationships.”

What is a good educational gift for kids?

“You can never go wrong with books,” says Ryan. “There are wonderful educational STEM books for kids out there, and great content creators to help you sift through them to find the one that is best for you.” To get the most out of them, Ryan suggests pairing books with at-home activities. She also recommends gifting experiences, such as memberships to science museums and zoos, monthly STEM kits, or even classes at a local community center.

To develop language, cognitive, and social skills, Vierheller recommends Zingo, a classic educational bingo game. “It provides options for different ages, with picture matching for toddlers, sight word matching for preschoolers, and word matching for older children,” she says. “The fast-paced format engages little minds and helps strengthen foundational skills through play.”
