Trader Joe’s recently recalled its Chicken, Lentil & Caramelized Onion Pilaf with SKU# 75473. The grocery store chain announced the recall on February 2, linking it to the potential presence of foreign material.

The Chicken, Lentil & Caramelized Onion Pilaf has only been available since early January. According to the Trader Joe's fan account @traderjoeshungry, the pilaf was found in the frozen foods aisle for $4.49. The frozen meal featured ingredients like basmati rice, green lentils, boneless chicken thigh meat, raisins, sunflower oil, and a variety of spices, such as ground cinnamon and cumin.

However, shortly after the product launched in stores, some customers who bought it complained on a Reddit thread about finding a rock in the Chicken, Lentil & Caramelized Onion Pilaf. It hasn’t been determined if this particular complaint is linked to the current recall.

Trader Joe’s urges customers to discard the Chicken, Lentil & Caramelized Onion Pilaf immediately if purchased. Customers can also return the product to their local Trader Joe’s store for a full refund.

A review published by the peer-reviewed scientific journal Heliyon states foreign material found in food is any “non-food, foreign bodies that may cause illness or injury to the consumer and materials that are not typically part of the food product.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says its guidelines for these types of “hard and sharp objects,” usually refer to “small materials that could be potentially put in the mouth with an upper size limit of 25 mm (1 inch).” The size of the potential foreign material found in Trader Joe’s Chicken, Lentil & Caramelized Onion Pilaf is not known.

This latest recall follows other recent voluntary recalls from the grocer, including a cantaloupe recall in the fall for possible salmonella, along with the potential of undeclared milk in the Texas Tamale Company Gourmet Black Bean Tamales and potential foreign material (metal) found in Multigrain Crackers with Sunflower and Flax Seeds last summer.
