Martina Essert, Deputy Editor of Standards and Practices

What I do and cover

As the first-ever deputy editor of standards & practices at The Red & Black, my role is dynamic. I am the watchdog of ethics within our newsroom and in the ways we interact with our community through our sources, advertisers and partners. The workflow looks different each day, but is mainly characterized by conversations about ethics, standards and DEI with staffers, organizing events and workshops to help build an inclusive learning environment, and working with the editor in chief and managing editors to oversee the direction of the newsroom as a whole.

What I value

As an aspiring First Amendment attorney, I am a fierce advocate for the freedoms of speech and press from state oversight or control. I value the importance of journalism as a means of truth telling, but also realize the frequent ambiguity of what the truth is. Because of that, I have found that what I truly value is equity in opportunity, making an effort to actually understand a situation before attempting to explain it to your audience and taking accountability when you make mistakes (which you will).
