I just disembarked from a 2,000 person nude cruise. AMA.

Edit: I can't possibly respond to every single question. Here are the answers to the most asked questions.

  1. The staff was dressed.

  2. This was a cruise for nudists, not a "lifestyle" cruise. Accordingly, there was no public sex and no erections that I saw. An erection would be considered poor form in this environment.

  3. Generally speaking, the crowd was older and not particularly attractive. However, there were attractive people too.

  4. The "why" is because it's a nice feeling to be nude, just like it's a nice feeling for a man to be without a shirt at the beach. Skinny dipping is great. Being nude at some of the world's nicest beaches is great.

  5. No bare butts on any surface in any public space. Ever. That's not a difficult concept. Nudists are as interested in hygiene as much as if not more than the next guy.

Most people who try nudism love it. YOLO. Please don't write that the only people who are on nude beaches are the ones who shouldn't be there. That's crabbed and trite.

Thanks.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, this was a crowd with lots of nudist experience. Everyone knows you can’t take pictures of other people. I was much less worried here than I have been at nude beaches. Almost no one had phones with them outside their cabin. There were many signs posted. There were a lot of staff from the charter company whose job it was to enforce good naturist etiquette. And I’ve spent time online researching nudism and I’ve never seen a single online photograph from the cruise except for the group shots that people voluntarily pose for. For those reasons, i wasn’t concerned.

This seemed odd that no one had their phones then it occurred me they wouldn’t have a pocket to put them in lol

I could probably stow mine under a boob.

Do you carry a towel everywhere you go? It seems rather gross to have multiple naked sweaty bodies sitting or laying on everything that everyone uses.

Also is it weird that when you go to the bathroom that you are already naked so you just use it and do you try to clean even more since you are using communal things?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Yes. One must only sit with a towel under one’s bare butt. There are clean towels all over the ship.

Yes, it is strange to go to the bathroom when one is naked. I for one was much more fastidious after using the bathroom because of the unusual exposure.

u/HornySweetMexiSlut avatar

Isn’t that funny. I had the same experience at nudist resort in Jamaica. Standing in line nude for the restroom is just weird. And then you go in there and you are already naked. Feels weird. And it feels like you forgot to do something when you exit too. Bizarre. But outside of that I felt totally normal and free everywhere else. I can’t imagine on a nude cruise. I think I would go all the way to my cabin to use the bathroom. lol.

How old are you and your partner? I ask because I'm curious to know if the crowd is predominantly older would a younger couple feel out of place?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Unquestionably, there were relatively few younger couples. We’re 67/61. The younger couples seemed to be having fun though. It’s a very friendly vibe, so I doubt the younger couples experienced any distress. If doing lots of fun things without having to wear clothes sounds good to you, I would say go for it. This was a pro-nudity crowd, so everyone was upbeat.

I feel like whenever I come across anything about nudists whether it’s a community or cruise like you mentioned it seems to be majority older people. Do you have an idea of why that is? Why is it majority older and not younger?

Because at that age they don't get random boners, and they've got nothing to lose as far as being self conscious.

What do you like about being nude with other people? Also, are you supposed to not look at people's genitalia in such a situation? Like just maintain eye contact?

As a fellow nudist, I’ll answer…yeah, eye contact is a must. But that’s great. You end up really focused on what the other person is saying. And, as someone who instantly forgets people’s names when I’m clothed, I find that I remember names without fail when we’re all nude.

Maybe not specific to the cruise, but nudism in general... I'm assuming boners just happen, since it happens in everyday clothed life, too. Are they frowned upon or just accepted in this environment?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar
Edited

In my experience, they almost never happen. This cruise is very non-sexual, so a man would want to hide it somehow. Non-nudists think about this a lot more than nudists do.

Good to know! Thanks.

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

This cruise was not a swingers cruise or a sex positive environment. I’m sure they are more common and accepted in that setting.

Yeah I was just wondering because sometimes they just happen for no apparent reason. But maybe something about that environment (shame?) keeps them tame.

It was my understanding most nudest places are sex positive. How is this different? That is good to hear

more replies More replies

Yeah I've been in a bunch of fully nude spas and nude beaches and they're not at all sexual. A lot of people have the idea that a naked body automatically implies sex, but when you see it in a casual environment it doesn't feel that way. So I think the boner fear is mostly unwarranted.

I don’t really have a question, just a little blurb. I went to a nude beach a few years ago and actually enjoyed myself. I was not comfortable going fully nude but my experience was basically what you are describing-very chill and people were nice in a non sexual way. I think people do think about it the wrong way, it was a very non sexual experience and I enjoyed it! No one was weird or creepy as we were quite young females at the time. 10/10 experience.

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Exactly. Nudists are always perplexed why the vast amount of humanity doesn’t feel this same way.

More replies

It's been years since I read it, but in Naked, David Sedaris goes to a nudist colony with the goal of becoming more comfortable with his body. As I recall, he says that when you go in to town to get groceries or something, you could always spot the nudists at the store because they never looked comfortable in clothing. He said they always had clothes that didn't match and didn't fit quite right.

When you do have to wear clothes, how is your fashion sense? Do you agree or disagree with this idea?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Preliminarily, nudists dislike the term “nudist colony.” That term went out of fashion, so to speak, in about 1965. It’s nude beach, resort, club, etc.

Nudists tend to be a little different, perhaps, and less concerned with superficiality, so I suppose it’s possible they are not great dressers. But I don’t that that’s widely true. If you saw everyone boarding this ship clothed, you’d view them as normally dressed.

I would think "colony" is just shorter/sexier than "retirement community".

More replies
More replies

So, I am a nudist as well…and I have been told I have very good fashion sense. If given the choice, I’d prefer to be naked. But, if I have to wear clothes, I’m going to try & make it look good.

How quickly did you become desensitized to all the naked?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

I’m an experienced nudist, so I was very comfortable from the beginning. I couldn’t honestly say I became completely desensitized because it’s fun people watching.

u/KyleMcMahon avatar

I feel like “people watching” on a nude cruise is something different then the typical meaning 😂

Does it smell funky with everyone nude or are people usually really clean

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

No smells. People are clean. One can’t put one’s bare butt on any surface; a towel is required.

When you move to a different piece of furniture, how do you all keep track of which side of the towel was the brown side in the last chair?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

If there were literally a brown side, it’s time to get a new towel.

I meant the butt side. I was trying to be funny. It’s just that the towel is there to stop butt contact with sitting surfaces correct? Wouldn’t you all need 2 different color sided towels for this to be effective?

What was the rule for boners

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

As I said above, this is something that nonnudists worry about a lot more than nudists. I’ve been a nudist for ten years and I’ve almost never seen one. Since this cruise is not a sex-positive event, the man would be expected to conceal it.

Percentage of attractive bodies vs. please-put-some-clothes-on bodies? Be honest.

u/wisecommenter2 avatar
Edited

I’m a straight guy, so I don’t have a sense about the men. Cruises seem to be for people who like to eat and lie around, so there were a lot of large people. Also, most people don’t seem to be comfortable being nude in public until later in life so the crowd was older. I’d say 20% attractive, 20% average, 60% unattractive. However, if you’re there for the views, you’re probably going for the wrong reasons. And I would never suggest or think people need to put their clothes on. That’s antithetical to the whole point.

u/SpiceEarl avatar

That matches up with what I've seen when I've gone to nude beaches a couple of times. Appreciate the honest answer.

Are you expected to remove your clothes as soon as you get off the ship? Is everyone completely naked, or is wearing underwear acceptable?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

I assume you meant “on” the ship, not off. One couldn’t be nude in port and one never had to be nude. I didn’t see any underwear, but some women wore shear tops and coverups.

[deleted]
[deleted]

So it was technically “clothing optional”? Does pretty much everyone (besides crew/staff) choose to be naked pretty much the whole time? Or was there any significant number of clothed guests?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Everyone was naked around the pools. Some people obviously were more comfortable being clothed at the bars and theatres.

more reply More replies
More replies

Yes sorry, i meant on the ship. Like when are you expected to remove all your clothes

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

If you never wanted to remove your clothes, you didn’t have to. But then why would you be on the ship? I’m not sure I understand your question. Most people were nude most of the time. However, since one has to dress to go to the main dining room, there were always many clothed people at and after dinner time.

I get what they’re asking. Like how long after taking off from the port do u remove your clothes? Like as soon as u get on the boat, before it takes off? Or do you have to wait for it to take off before u can take your clothes off? When the boat is going to be docking soon do they make an announcement for everyone to put their clothes on?

Do people wear flip-flops or sandals? Any shoes at all?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Shoes were required walking around the boat, although some folks went barefoot nonetheless. Of course, one could be barefoot on beach chairs and in the pools. Unless you were dressed up for dinner, everyone was in flip flops or sandals.

When you say dressed up for dinner, do you mean you had to wear clothes for dinner? Or would people just wear their nice shoes and still be naked other than that?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

It depends where you ate Clothes were required in the main dining room and in the specialty restaurants. Many people dressed for night generally, after spending the day nude in the sun. So after 6:00 pm, there was a strange mix of nude, normally dressed, and women dressed in sexy clothes like see through blouses. It was weird to be at a bar and having some people nude and some dressed for a nice evening out. It added to the charm as far i was concerned.

If the nudist thing is not sexual in nature at all, what is it for? Is it for looking? Do you WANT to see other naked bodies? I'm of the thought that my boxers are vital and an extension of my soul because they somehow "protect my nuts". And that butt-towel? I have like a daily butt-towel that just stays with me all day.

Im trying to grasp the motivation here. Please help me understand the "why" behind your nudist adventures.

It is also philosophical and activist:

Some of us want to desexualize the naked body. People find offense in nudity. People get ashamed for simply being. Others justify rape or sexual misconduct for garments or skin exposure. Many attribute value and morality to clothing.

The human body is not offensive. All bodies are beautiful. Everyone should be proud of who and what they are. Clothing does not determine your value or place in society, you simply are valuable.

u/BannanasAreEvil avatar

I agree with this statement very much!

I've noticed as our society has shunned away from nudity even in settings where it's to be expected (locker rooms) where people still attempt to cover up and going through weird dances to keep themselves covered up. Yet at this time we are also bombarded with body positivity on one side and then so much exposure to sex and nudity through porn.

So we're being told be be happy with our bodies but the only bodies we see are the ones force fed to us through media. This has distorted our perceptions of what the average body looks like.

I find the human body beautiful because it's natural. My 10 year old will spend most of his day nude if he can and we allow it. I'm hoping as he ages he still has the confidence to not succumb to pressure to always be clothed even in his own home.

We want to go to a family friendly nudist camp, we think our son would enjoy it after he feels confident enough to treat it like it's his own home. We don't have many options near our home, actually none within a few hundred miles. So it would have to be a all out trip, and we would rather allow him to be comfortable in a place that we only stayed for 1 day and didn't invest so much money into the trip in case he couldn't get comfortable enough.

We've talked to him about it and his first reaction was "I don't want to be the only one naked!" which we got a chuckle out of. We could tell he wasnt completely sure, we could see him mulling it over in his head and his facial expressions changed rapidly between delight, fear, shame and embarrassment.

Unfortunately his second response was "so I can see girls naked?" and we didn't know how to address that. He was 8 and while we understand it's natural, we were not wanting to go to ogle naked people and although we tried explaining that to him we didn't want to shame his curiosity either.

So if you have experience in places that are family friendly id appreciate your experience with them! I'd like to know how the environment behaves when children are around.

Have you ever gone skinny dipping? It’s great to be nude to go swimming, dancing, walking along the beach, etc. For me, that’s the main thing. If I’m candid, I don’t mind seeing naked women, so that’s nice too.

It’s the same reason men don’t wear shirts to go swimming or on the beach. It’s great feeling. I’m sure some people have an exhibitionist thrill, but I don’t. Also, I’m not sure that a naked person among 2,000 naked people could be considered an exhibitionist.

u/YoungandPregnant avatar
Edited

So freedom of movement is the main thing here. Beyond sexuality and exhibition/voyeurism -- its just to feel good. Not be constricted by clothes.

Am I correctly understanding? The main thrill is simply freedom of movement and a sensory experience undampened by clothing? Thank you for sharing with me.

EDIT: and I also understand the idea of naked women being a "nice" rather than "stimulating". Its an interesting take/perspective. I too wouldn't be stimulated unless it was full spread eagle o'clock.

How comfortable would burn victims feel on this kind of cruise or people with vitiligo ? Would they get a lot of stares? Typically they cover and hide skin conditions in public to avoid the stares and replusive looks.

Would skin Conscious people be comfortable in this kind of cruise?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Nudists regard themselves as nonjudgmental , and typically admire people who go clothes free notwithstanding disabilities. There were several very large people on board and I have no doubt it was without incident. I saw one person with a major birthmark on his/her face.

I think it would be fine.

I’m pretty confident it would be a safe environment for single women. in fact, we met such a woman at the bar and spoke to her for quite a while. She is confident in her own skin and finds conventional attitudes on nudity and sex hypocritical.

There are many staff members of the charter company whose principal job is to ensure appropriate naturist etiquette.

With regard to your boyfriend, I can’t hazard a guess. I’m sure there are people who go on the cruise and find the whole thing overwhelming. That being said, the overall vibe is very positive. These are people who find nudity very enjoyable and not a big deal. It’s a positive and joyful environment. While some people drink, it wasn’t a drunken rowdy event. It was a social event, kind of like the first weeks of college, except almost everyone was older and nude.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around nudism, especially as you said most don’t have particularly attractive bodies. Why would you want to show that off to the world? Or is that the point - to be comfortable in your own skin and not worry about how others see you?

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

It feels nice and there’s nothing so special about my body that I feel like I have to hide it from the world in those rare circumstances where it’s permissible. It’s the same reason men don’t wear shirts at the beach.

[deleted]
[deleted]

A lot of guys would also be reluctant to take their shirts off in public - that’s even a meme. But I see what you mean. I guess it is related in some way to body acceptance. Why it skews toward older people - they’re less invested in other people’s opinions

There’s no requirement that anyone be nude so far as I know. That being said, nearly everyone was, at least by the pools. Away from the pools, some clothing wasn’t uncommon. Is there a “no photography” policy, or is everyone just sort of on their honor to be respectful and discreet?

I’m a clumsy person and hurt myself all the time - pinch my fingers at the door, kick the table leg with my toes, scrape my elbow around the corner, etc. I assume there are clumsy nudists, do they wear some kind of protective gear or how do they not hurt their private parts, especially like when go kayaking or in a dark, crowded bar navigating around?

What’s the demographic? When I’ve been to nude beaches it’s typically middle aged overweight people and about 80% overweight.

I saw a video recently where a pedofile victim was repeatedly victimized at nudist camps, particularly in the pools.

I will never look at any nudist colony again the same way after watching this.

Were children present on this cruise?

What was the spread of hot and nice to look at, vs not very nice to look at? And also, were the crew members nude? I could never lol but it's cool to know things like this exist.

Did you sleep in pj’s in the cabin or were you naked there too?

Was it mandatory nudity? Or clothing optional? How did you deal with the temperature and whether? Where geographically was it?

That would be disgusting. Don't know why you would do this when you could just wear clothes lol. Who wants to see a bunch of floppy dongs and old lady vagina. I gets it's cultural, but to me I feel like the only reason to do this is low key pervertedness. This is different than people going in a hot tub naked, or a sauna, but an entire cruise vacation of pure nakedness ? Weird af. Like imagine everyone sitting in the fancy restaurant just ass naked. So stupid.

Who first came up with the idea of combining my two least favorite things: (1) seeing other people naked, and (2) a cruise?

I always see positive things about nudist communities and that they’re always chill. On this cruise did you ever see a negative experience like someone just acting out of order or being disrespectful? What about in general assuming you’ve been to other outings. Idk just seems like nudists tend to never have problem people you know.

Were all the regular activities also in the nude other than the main dining room? Bingo, trivia, Buffet? I had looked at going on this cruise but it was out of my price range :(

I’m guessing these people weren’t porn star hit, they were sweaty Alabama people

How old are you? Why do you think nudists tend to be older, as you said before?

Nudist are always geriatric.    Why is that.

I’ve read some of your other responses, so I’m thinking this may be a non-issue due to the average age… but what does a nudist woman do while she’s on her period?? Do some people occasionally wear underwear or is it 100% nude 100% of the time?

Tampons and cups are internal. It’s a non-issue.

u/wisecommenter2 avatar

Nudity was not mandatory on this cruise, so if a woman wanted to wear something on her lower body while menstruating, that would be fine.

I worked as a dancer on a nude cruise. Toom a day to get used to it then I joined in! Me and one of the dancers did all the events naked. I found it liberating

Did you plan on broadcasting your experience on Reddit for the world to see afterwards like you’re doing now? Do you tend to do things so you can broadcast them for others to see afterwards?

More replies

this may be an odd question, what about shoes? is that apart of the experience? going without shoes seems okay until i think about going to the public restroom

Super late to this party but I came here from a ‘news article’ and had a question I couldn’t see when I scrolled through!

Did you get any boat safety info, and was nudity a factor in procedures? For example, was there any advice around dressing/not dressing in the event of an emergency and needing to disembark into a lifeboat?

I love this!!!! I’ve been wanting to plan a trip for myself in the next couple years, this sounds awesome! What are your thoughts on what it might be like for an early 20s female going to something like this alone?
