Little Shop of Horrors

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Remixing Roger Corman's B-movie by way of the Off-Broadway musical, Little Shop of Horrors offers camp, horror and catchy tunes in equal measure -- plus some inspired cameos by the likes of Steve Martin and Bill Murray.

Pauline Kael New Yorker Little Shop of Horrors is jivey, senseless fun. The stupidity is appealing, the way it is in great comic strips. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Walter Goodman New York Times Levi Stubbs's big voice explodes from the insatiable plant, and there's a knockout turn by Steve Martin and Bill Murray as a sadistic dentist and his masochistic patient. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Empire Magazine Some of the slower tunes tend to grind but the sort of musical/ retro irony is still amusing in places. Not if you don't like dentists though. Rated: 2/5 May 25, 2011 Full Review Kristy Strouse Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying With a hearty dose of camp and a campy bit of heart, there’s enough horror to satisfy genre fans and catchy tunes to sing you through the night. Dec 9, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies If you've only seen the original theatrical cut of the horror comedy musical, it's worth watching Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut! Rated: 5/5 Sep 18, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review One of the more delightful aspects of Little Shop of Horrors is how well it blends tragic characters and bloody murder with a genuine, heartfelt romance - an unlikely balance. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Dani G Very theatrical, very rock opera style. Simple, but well done. Maybe the best thing from this film are the little participations (or almost cameos?) from Steve Martin and Bill Murray Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Teddy B 'Little Shop of Horrors' remains so genuinely charming and well-structured (I am generally referring to the original ending, even if some songs in the process lose their meaning in the story with its darker turn) to this day with frenetic humour, camp, and brilliantly designed setwork to boot. Even the choice of re-adaptation of the 1960 cult classic is a brilliant idea unto itself due to the potential of the story and the characters for a musical format. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Audience Member I remember watching this a while back and had a good time A remake of Roger Corman's B-movie based on the stage musical directed by the late Frank Oz In the tradition of 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' the film has a total of 14 musical numbers, state-of-the-art puppetry, and a great sense of fun and energy A lovable cast too from Rick Moranis to Ellen Greene to Steve Martin to the late John Candy to Bill Murray Seymour is a nerdy employee in a flower shop in the city, he has his boss Mushnik who took him in as an orphan and co-worker Audrey Audrey is the eye of his affection but she's dating an abusive dentist Orin Business has been dismal selling flowers but all that changes when Seymour comes across an unusual plant resembling a Venus flytrap Turns out this floral abnormality appeared during a solar eclipse from outer space it finally attracts customers boosting their sales but Seymour then discovers it has a thirst for blood but also human beings Now Seymour is stuck trying to feed this hungry plant against his better judgment The 3 main singers who narrate | love a lot; they have so much zest with each song, wardrobe choice, and also playing side characters Moranis is all kinds of dweeby but likable torn between the love of his life and satisfying this hungry plant Greene is the perfect amount of lovely and shy but also sticks out the most with her fashionable outfits selling flowers Martin is just a treat playing a slimy dentist enjoying the pain he inflicts on his patients while also pushing his girlfriend around But the hungry plant is my favorite character with a deep voice and lively craving for humans The puppeteer work is one of the best given it took nearly 30 operators to bring to life An enjoyably fun experience from start to finish Funny and catchy in equal measure with great music and amazing effects with lovable actors Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review Lou T Every once in a while, a film comes around that is so wacky and charming, that it almost feels like a fever dream. Little Shop of Horrors is exactly that, in all the finest ways. Being a musical/horror/comedy, this is a film unlike anything else. The most important part of any musical would be the songs and this one hits the mark, with plenty of catchy bops and truly well done performances to weave the story around. The cast fill their roles with so much charm, even the 'villains' will leave you waiting for them to pop up on screen. Rather fast paced, it sometimes leaves you wishing they would linger on a plot point and not move on so quickly, as there are some moments that I feel could have benefited from some extra time. Though the ending is fine, I can't help, but wish they stuck to the original ending and really gave us something to talk about. Altogether, you won't leave this film disappointed and you just might find a new cult love. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Jens B LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is pure joy! The direction, the set design, the actors, the cinematography, the effects and puppetry, the songs, everything just works perfectly! So much talent! This has to be one of my favorite musicals of all time, right next to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Oh, and please, watch the Director's Cut, it's amazing!
