Critics Consensus

Unapologetically sweet and maybe even a little corny, The Sound of Music will win over all but the most cynical filmgoers with its classic songs and irresistible warmth.

Kevin Maher Times (UK) Whether you enjoy it as a fun family singalong or a moving true story, this classic still bounces along in a tremendously likeable fashion. Dec 27, 2023 Full Review William J. Nazzaro Arizona Republic It is not a bold, adventuresome motion picture, nor does it advance the art of the film even a trifle. What it is, and this is what the producers must have intended, is tuneful, uncomplicated entertainment, expensively set before the viewer. Mar 30, 2022 Full Review Bob Thomas Associated Press The last of the Rodgers-Hammer-stein collaborations, The Sound of Music is the best screen version of their works. Feb 5, 2020 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The Sound of Music may be schmaltz, but it’s irresistible schmaltz. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 2, 2024 Full Review Pauline Kael McCall's Of course, it's well done for what it is: that is to say, those who made it are experts at manipulating responses. They're the Pavlovs of moviemaking: they turn us into dogs that salivate on signal. Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily Robert Wise’s The Sound of Music is a film that has resonated with audiences spanning several generations. John L The Sound Of Music.....is just that the sound of music.....music enough to lift your heart in joy......... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Maria B The scattered but good hearted and strong willed Maria is a delightful protagonist. This film is in the top tier of classics. It has strong themes including family, finding where you belong, and human love not taking away from divine love especially as the mother superior encourages Maria to follow her dreams even if they don't mean the convent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review D S Amazingly captivating film. Brilliant acting and script. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Test T I watched this on TV almost every Christmas during my childhood, and more recently on DVD. It's the best musical film that I've seen, and I still enjoy it now even after seeing it so often. In simple terms, the film exudes quality, in terms of story, casting, acting, locations, soundtrack, and everything else! It would be very difficult to surpass, even with the benefits of the many technical advances since it was made. As the lead, Julie Andrews is superb. It's one of those movies that completely envelopes the viewer, making the whole experience intensely satisfying. I thoroughly recommend this movie. I also recommend watching the additional material included on the DVD extras disc which gives a good insight into the origins of the story, the casting and how the film was made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Jude M What an amazing Musical! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Joshua H As a musical theatre nerd it's practically treason I haven't seen it till now. This was very effective, very well casted, great story-telling with with some brilliant tension at the end. This was just really good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
