'Tusk' opens with the sound of two men laughing at their own jokes, so I guess a doff of the cap is due to the filmmaker for encapsulating his movie so efficiently, right from the jump.

The material never quite commits itself tonally. Some scenes feel like a grotesque chiller, others play like your usual Smith-brand comedy. When Smith tries to combine these two tones, the unbalanced result is more awkward than enjoyable.

I have created a Rotten Tomatoes account purely to defend this movie. The ratings are absolutely criminal. This is a fine example of comedy and horror in the same film, the juxtaposition making it all the more jarring. Genuinely disturbing and hilarious. If you don’t like it, I get it. But this should have been received much better, hence the rating to help even it out.
