Under Paris Reviews

Dumb yet creative, preachy yet thrilling, this horror/disaster movie takes its outlandish premise to all the places that fans of the killer shark genre will appreciate.

There are moments that betray this inevitability, of course, but its tone never hesitates. Played completely straight, no one in this film seems to notice how ridiculous their predicament is.

Under Paris would have done better as a shark film if it picked a lane. It was pretending to be a story about grief & then one about ignorant governments and then another story about how humans endanger wildlife.

Without soul or suspense, this shark thriller will remind you of Jaws every step of the way.

If Snakes on a Plane spent more than 40 minutes showing the passengers walk through the aisles to get to their seats while the snakes just chilled out of frame, it’d be Under Paris.

This is one of those movies where you must suspend your disbelief to derive any enjoyment from it. For those looking for a more intelligent and believable shark thriller, you might want to steer clear.

It unfolds like a fairly classy suspense film about a rarely seen threat. It does not look cheap in the way Sharknado did, for instance. It’s quite competently shot and edited, it’s tense, and it’s frightening. In other words, it gets the job done.

Quick cuts and fast pacing move the story along, never quite overcoming its improbability but nonetheless providing mindless entertainment for finheads and Francophiles.

In any case, it's done with Olympian panache, and if the film — which stars Bérénice Bejo — is in parts shamelessly derivative of Jaws, it is also audaciously original and, better still, great fun.

It’s big, dumb fun but thankfully -- unlike the Sharknado-like movies -- it’s not self-aware, which makes it all the more enjoyable to watch. The bloody torsos don’t hurt, either.

The shift from Jaws knockoff to Free Willy is jarring but ultimately leads into one of the more hilariously gruesome set pieces in modern shark cinema. Just wish there was more moments in the film like that.

The last act is so gleefully ridiculous that it manages to overcome some major pacing issues in the first half. The final scene a thing of beauty.

The classic shark tale turns into a sample of the best catastrophe cinema, abuse of digital effects included. Meanwhile, the narrative gets lost in the depths of the Seine. [Full review in Spanish]

The film has rhythm, special effects and impossible dialogues, but it honors the genre... [Full review in Spanish]

A solid shark thriller whose admirable but clunky eco-warnings almost get in the way of a good time. Best when it allows itself to really go in-Seine.

One of the most substantive of the many aquatic-attack horror movies that have tried to coast along in the wake of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws… But when the inevitable bloodbath starts, Under Paris seems to be cribbing from much messier shark attack movies.

Full Review | Original Score: 42/100 | Jun 14, 2024

What bothered me the most about Under Paris was the fact that it ends up being more of a disaster movie rather than a shark movie. And it would have probably been more enjoyable if it wouldn't take itself so serious and fully embrace its nonsense.

This is killer shark horror/thriller done right across the board, from money well spent on CG to a cast and crew locked in and ready to create a seriously fun tale of nature gone amok with an assist from our own poor ecological choices.

Might be diverting enough to sate those looking for an uncomplicated shark film with some bite.

A guilty pleasure that delivers on its premise and promise, and even leaves you hankering for a sequel.
