Critics Consensus

White Noise may occasionally struggle with its allegedly unfilmable source material, but Noah Baumbach succeeds in finding the humorous heart of its surprisingly timely story.

White Noise wants you to think it has smart and interesting things to say, but it's mostly just a pretentious slog.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Above all, it is - not surprisingly - a marriage story, and the story of a family that, in its own bizarre way, might be the most functional and relatable Baumbach has ever portrayed. Rated: 4/5 Jan 16, 2023 Full Review Thelma Adams AARP Movies for Grownups It’s another one of 2022’s high profile, star-encrusted projects that struggles to be as good as its dazzling cast and provocative premise. Rated: 3/5 Jan 6, 2023 Full Review John Powers NPR White Noise is bursting with fun things to watch. And though the story takes place in the 1980s, it tackles present day preoccupations: human-caused disaster, media saturation, drug addiction and consumerism. Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Ally Ham The Review Geek Baumbach captures the novel’s emphasis on death and society’s attitude towards it. Rated: 7/10 Jul 21, 2024 Full Review Yasmine Kandil Discussing Film If anything, White Noise shows that being overtly faithful to a pre-existing source from another medium can fundamentally lead to a film’s downfall. Rated: 2/5 Jul 17, 2024 Full Review Connor Lightbody Movies We Texted About It is never completely all together, but allows itself to be so free and playful about the bindings of its genres that when the end-credits sequence appears, you’re absolutely convinced that [White Noise] is worthy of such a credits sequence Rated: 3/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Karl I went into this movie doubtful that it would be much more than ok given the press surrounding it, and I’m joyed to say I loved it. The film truly delivered a diverse range of tone and emotion which it navigated with expertise. Some parts of them movie feel amazing one moment, disappointing the next, and then clear by the end. Adam Driver delivers a wonderful performance alongside Greta Gerwig. This said I don’t believe this to be without its faults. There is still some parts of this that feel unnecessary to the overall narrative the movie constructs by the end. While most of the cinematography was wonderful and very well done, some shots felt as though they lacked confidence or were amateurish, which is odd for a movie of this budget and talent. Not everything felt as fine tuned and polished as say Marriage Story or The Squid and the Whale, however it was still as satisfying and wonderful, complete film by the end. I do believe that in ten years time this will be seen as a very important and innovative movie for Noah Baumbach’s impressive filmography. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/22 Full Review Patricia H It was witty and bizarre and all over the place and I totally loved it! Stay til the end and rhumba on! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/12/22 Full Review James True to the book. Great acting and quirky style makes it really engaging. Well done all around! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/11/22 Full Review Imani Wild ride and completely worth it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review alec S Muddled story but good acting Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review Carolyn This was my favorite book when I was in my 20s. I'm in my 50s now and honestly don't remember the book that well anymore. But I did notice it left out some things. The sets, props, and clothes had amazing attention to detail. Adam Driver was very good. Not a Greta Gerwig fan. Probably won't be enjoyed by people who didn't read the book. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/10/22 Full Review Read all reviews
