In 2003 Melbourne, Jewish Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov shares his story of love and resilience, told through fractured and traumatic memories, with novice writer Heather Morris. It starts in 1942, when he volunteers for "work duty" to aid the Slovakian war effort but finds himself sent to the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp. Those not murdered immediately are forced to build the emerging Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp. The smell of death hangs in the air as Lali realizes he's condemned to work in a kill factory. When he's offered a job tattooing numbers onto prisoner's arms, he takes it in the hope of surviving. But unexpected meaning is given to this hell when he meets a beautiful Slovakian woman -- prisoner 4562. For Lali it's love at first sight, and before long "Gita," as he will come to know her, drives his will to survive. Through perseverance and manipulation of an SS guard, Baretzki, Lali finds Gita again, but the risks he takes to keep them both alive may backfire.

Critics Consensus

A dramatization of atrocity and the fickleness of memory that can be difficult to watch, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is dramatically uneven but undeniably affecting.

Carol Midgley Times (UK) It is probably easy to pick holes in this adaptation but it is still a compelling piece of storytelling. Rated: 4/5 May 7, 2024 Full Review Nick Hilton Independent (UK) The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a strangely self-hating work. In attempting to disavow its airport-novel, schlocky origins, it inadvertently creates a new tension. Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2024 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times It's an honorable project, honorably made, moving at times, horrifying at others, in broad strokes and small details. May 3, 2024 Full Review Carmen Raya Fotogramas A story that appeals to sensitivity, hope, and the strength of love in the most terrible circumstances. [Full review in Spanish] Jun 26, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz While wary and weary of fractured narratives in similarly-themed dramas, here it actually works quite well, allowing the audience to see the aged Sokolov work through his trauma and be challenged by his ghosts. May 27, 2024 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Part survivor account and part love story, this adaptation of the popular novel highlights the complexities of Holocaust-related survivor's guilt while telling the story of a Jewish couple finding love in a Nazi extermination camp. Tom F A largely successful story that somewhat transcends trauma porn, but the series is a bit of a slog. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review Natalia N This is a series that should never have been made based on a book that should never have been made. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review IDT Kennels - E This series is a 10/10💯! I read the book 3 times and I probably will read it a 4th time. To see it brought to life through this series made it even more impactful, if that is possible. I usually find several inconsistencies when a book is brought to screen, but with this series that definitely wasn’t the case. Not only do I recommend this series but I almost insist you watch it. It’s incredible 💯! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Jackie H Heartbreaking but beautiful filming. Super sad and triggering but a great story. A+++ acting! Deserves a higher rating. They didn't hold back on this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review l T Everyone should watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Louise K Wasn't sure I could take this emotional weight of show, but watched episode 1 - and sure I was right, it's totally destroying, but beautiful made and especially well cast. I'll be taking it ep by ep when I can bear it, but will keep watching. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews
