A magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred at 4:12 p.m. Sunday about 4 miles east of Lake Henshaw, producing light shaking that was felt across much of San Diego County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor began 8.1 miles beneath the Earth’s surface and appears to be associated with the Elsinore fault, a roughly 190-mile system that partly runs through San Diego County.

Scientists say such quakes are not uncommon in Southern California and rarely lead to larger events.
