• The Peer Learning Collaborative presents “Rhetoric & Persuasion: Plato to the Present” at 3 p.m. Thursdays, June 6, 13, 20 and 27, at the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd. The four-week course is facilitated by Deborah Williams, who has a Ph.D. in literature and rhetoric and is pursuing a master’s degree in art history with a focus on visual rhetoric. “Sacred Architecture of San Diego/Tijuana” runs Friday, June 14, through Sunday, Sept. 1, at the La Jolla Historical Society’s Wisteria Cottage Gallery, 780 Prospect St. The exhibition, curated by the Rev. Mark Hargreaves, pastor of St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla, leads viewers through major architectural movements of the 20th century and the ideas and theology that have shaped sacred buildings in the region, as well as highlights the work of contemporary architectural photographers Maha Bazzari, Estefany Maya and Darren Bradley. “Hold Fast,” an exhibit exploring San Diego’s kelp forests and climate change, runs until September at Birch Aquarium, 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla. The show features works of local photographer and marine scientist Oriana Poindexter, gyotaku prints created by artist Dwight Hwang and kelp forest mapping by Scripps Institution of Oceanography Ph.D. student Mohammad Sedarat.
