The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life of North County San Diego will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 from 12 p.m.- 9 a.m. at Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad. The event is more than just a walk. It is a volunteer-led movement that unites North County communities in celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost to cancer, and raising funds to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families, according to a news release.

Community members are invited to form a Relay team, join an already existing team, or drop by the event to show support. This year’s fundraising goal is $250,000. Last year’s Relay successfully raised more than $230,000 for ACS programs. These programs include: Hope Lodge: a free lodging program for patients who need to travel for treatment; Road to Recovery: matches cancer patients in need of transportation to their treatments with volunteer drivers; Reach to Recovery: offers one-on-one peer support for breast cancer patients; 24/7 Cancer Helpline: provides immediate support for people dealing with cancer.

The Relay for Life event will include family fun, such as a kids’ zone, police and fire department visits, live bands, and a family movie, along with more solemn events, such as the after-dark luminaria walk.

Visit relayforlife.org/northcountysandiegoca to sign up for the event and join the North County community in the fight against cancer. Event address: 2605 Carlsbad Blvd., Carlsbad.
