In his divorce petition, August 8, 1896, in Itawamba County Chancery Court in Mississippi he gave his age as 45 for a birth year of 1851. He stated in the 1900 census that his father was born in Mississippi and his mother was born in Alabama. George died around 1913 at the home of his oldest son, William Sanford Wimbs. Death was in Pleasant Site, Franklin County, Alabama, and he was buried in the Pogo Cemetary. The grave is unmarked and in the back corner of the cemetary. Notes for WILLIAM SANFORD 'BILL' WIMBS: William said at one time his father (George) took the sons from Tennessee to Alabama to get away from someone trying to take the sons away. This was about 1872. He made some comment about changing a name to keep from getting caught. William suffered from 'falling sickness' or epilepsy. Money was hard to get. He survived by eating sprouts of oak trees and ate dirt to stop the hunger pains. Probally had ulcers and died of cancer of the stomach. Buried at Cummings Cemetary, OK. Notes for FRAN SHEARIN WALTERS: There are many reasons that people start the search for their ancestors. Some want a sense of belonging or of continuation. Some want to join a special social or religious group and must have proof of where they came from. Some are just plain curious. Curiosity is where this search started. Martin Luther Wimbs was born and raised in a little community called Mantachie, Mississippi. He and his wife lived there until they were in their 80's. He was a farmer and land owner, a basketball, and softball coach, a principle for several of the local schools and a teacher. Berniece earned her teaching degree and taught for many years at the different schools in the area all the while helping Luther with the farm and raising their son, Martin. About 1984, while their oldest grandson, Lee and his wife Shearin, were visiting from North Carolina the topic came up in conversation with Grandad about where the Wimbs came from. He said he didn't know. His father, John Thomas, never said and maybe didn't know. What he had heard over the years he couldn't prove and didn't know that he would ever be able to find out. When questioning Luthers' youngest sister, Ruth, the story evolved; George Washington Wimbs had left his wife and four sons and was "away somewhere". Word reached him that his wife had died and that the community was going to declare his four boys orphans. He left wherever he was, went home and got his sons and left the area. We can find the trail in Nauvoo, Alabama where George married again, and took his second wife, her mother, and his boys and settled in Fulton, Mississippi. The legend continues " his second wife did not like his sons and would not let them in the house even to eat their meals. They had to sleep out in the barn, and eat on the porch of the house." In a census of that county the boys are listed living with Georges' mother-in-law, in a seperate house. George and his second wife, Catherine O'rear, had 5 little girls while living in Fulton. The two oldest died while young and are buried in Fulton cemetary in unmarked graves. According to divorce documents filed in the Fulton courthouse, Catherine "missed her people in Alabama". She left George and she and her mother took the other three girls and went back to "her people". According to documents, George tried to get her to come back, and even went back to her home in Alabama to talk with her, but she would have none of him, refused to return to Fulton with him. He filed for divorce on grounds of desertion and the divorce was granted. In the document the name is spelled W-i-m-s and George is listed as illiterate and makes an X as his mark. In their search, Lee and Shearin, got to meet the youngest daughter of George Wimbs and Catherine O'rear. Her name was Calla Dona Harbin and she was 92 years old at the time. She had had a stroke, and couldn't make herself understood, but she was living with her daughter and she could answer the questions for her mother. According to Thelma, her daughter, " Aunt Callie" remembered the trip back to Alabama as a little girl. She said that her mother and grandmother and she and her sisters traveled in an ox cart and it was a long, hard trip for the women and little girls.

"Aunt Callie" also remembered her father walking up in the yard to talk to her mother in Alabama. Her mother took in wash, and was washing clothes at the time. When Catherine saw George approaching she sent Callie and her sisters in the house. Callie never saw her father again. This is the verbal history that started the search. No one has been able to get past George and find where he came from or anything about his family. Most of the decendants of George Washington Wimbs have been found, though not much information on a lot of them. In searching, there have been two other branches of Caucasionmbs, several African-American branches, and one Canadian branch. They all appear about 1850, and no one seems to know any of the history of the family. The name has been spelled Wimbs, Wimms, Wims, Weems, and Wymbs, many times in the same family! There are indications that the search should convene in Georgia. Maybe around Macon or Ft. Gaines. There are hints of a plantation. There is also listed G. W. Wims in the Va.
