Area: Reading Comprehension Lesson Topic (What is the big idea?): Student will learn how to complete a KWL chart. This will help the student access his background knowledge prior to reading, to recognize what information he should look for while he is reading, and what he learns from the reading. What standard(s) and/or IEP goal(s) will it address?
Colorado Academic Standards (2010) Grade Level Expectation: Third Grade Content Area: Reading, Writing, and Communicating Standard 2 Reading for all Purposes 1. Main Objective of Instruction (What do you want the student(s) to learn?): The student will learn how to complete a KWL chart. Supporting Objectives: Student will access background knowledge prior to reading. Student will fill in a KWL chart using complete sentences, correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Specific Strategies to be taught/modeled: K- what you already know W- what you want to learn L- what you learned from the text
Planning for individual differences (mediated scaffolding): What are the accommodations/modifications you need to prepare? I will have several books for the student to choose from to ensure that he has a topic of some interest to him. What background knowledge do the students have? How will you assess students learning pre, during and post? I will ask the student if he has ever done a KWL chart and if he has not, I will explain it to him.
Materials and Resources: Level appropriate texts KWL charts Birsh, J. R. (Ed.). (2011). Multisensory teaching of basic language skills. (3rd ed.). Baltimore, MD.: Paul H. Brooks Publishing Co.
How/where will students be able to integrate (generalize) this learning? The student will be able to use this strategy anytime he is reading narrative or expository text. This strategy will help him remember what he reads because it will remind him to access background knowledge before he reads. How will you evaluate the lesson (judicious review)?
Main Objective of this lesson: The student will learn how to complete a KWL chart. (CONTENT-PROCESS) Opening: (SET How will you get the student(s) attention?) Relate lesson to prior learning. Communicate the objective of the lesson. I will ask the student if he ever thinks about what he is about to read before he reads it. I will ask the student if he ever thinks about what he knows about the subject of the text before he reads it.
Strategies (I Do): I will explain the strategy: KWL Chart K- what I know about the subject W what I want to learn about the subject L what I learned about the subject by reading the text Then I will model the strategy by reading a book and completing a KWL chart.
Check for Understanding- What will you ask? Do you know anything about this text? By doing a picture walk, what kinds of things do you think you want to find out about the story? Differentiation:
Closure: Student(s) summarize, demonstrate learning of lesson. Independent Practice (You Do). Formally END the lesson.
Student will read a story, with help if needed, and complete a KWL chart independently.
