About time (2013)

Plot summary: At the age of 21, Tim finds out via his MAIN CAST: father that he is a part of a generation RACHEL MCADMAS that are able to time travel enabling him Studio: BILL NIGHY to change what happens in his life and Working Domhnall Gleeson what has happened! His idea of travelling title films back and forth through time to change his life to be what may be classed as perfect and get a girlfriend of his dreams doesnt go to plan as he encounters a series of Director/writer: Cinematography: Distributor: problems! John Richard Curtis Universal Guleserian studios! Genres: RomEditing by: com Budget: Mark Day Sci-fi $35 million Comedy drama

Genre!

There are various conventions within this movie that make it out to be to be a ROM-com with elements of sci-fi as there are the typical conventions of kissing, scenes that contain sexual nature and also scenes of innocence that lead to two people coming together for mutual satisfaction. Also the use of dialogue where he says all I want is a girlfriend brings us to the conclusion of identifying that romance is most likely going to be involved!

Looking above at the various screen shots we can clearly identify the genre as on the left of the screen we can see that Tim (the boy) and Mary (the girl) are currently in bed (denotation) the connotations of this is that they have possibly just had sex or an intimate event and this brings us to the conclusion of what has taken place to being a sexual event. Therefore coinciding with the conventions of a romance movie! Also through iconography we can obtain a lot of symbolic meanings. As within the clip there is a quite substantial amount of red this leads us to the meaning of the colour which is related to love, passion and deep thoughts and as the colour is associated with love this leads us to the conclusion of the film being a romance!

AUDIENCE!

About time includes features of Britishromance, comedy and science fiction. From this we can conclude that individuals who are interested in these various genres will be people who are potentially interested in this film.

From the various genres that about time fit into they will automatically attract an audience based on the categories. Also I personally think that this film is directed at couples from the age rating of the movie all the way up to the ages of 45 which is a wide audience, making it easier to attract people and get good box office figures. I also think that people who are interested in the institutions that are involved within the production of the movie will be a potential audience as they will know what to expect from universal pictures. Also based on socio economic groupings people with a decent amount of disposable

representation

In terms of representation there are not many groups or individuals that are represented across the whole films as there are only 3 main characters who give of different representations individually but as these representation are on an personal level it is difficult to be accurate in generalisability ( generalising the statement or representation type on the whole group who posses the characteristics of the individual)

So in context to looking at groups the main group that is represented is couples and the relationship between the father and son. Firstly when looking at couples they are represented as constantly positive, which could go with the stereotype of couples being happy 24/7 and that they do engage in sexual intimacy. When looking at the relationship between the father and son we identify that they are represented as having issues but the father always wants what is best for the son. This is a common stereotype within society. Also as an individual Tim is ginger and the stereotypes of this group of people is being outcasts this is portrayed throughout the film until Tim subverts this stereotype and becomes a person who is confident and who is a main person.

Media language!

Through the factors such as camera angles, shot types, movement, composition, Miseen-scene, editing, pace and effects, diegetic and non-diegetic sound. we can adopt connotations from them. For example when we see the scene of Tim and Mary on the bed we will adopt a thought where we link this shot to them just finishing engaging in an intimate act. Also when we see long shots we can identify that the object or individual or group that is in the centre of the frame is a main person or feature to the narrative. Also when we first see time in the opening scene from his composition and body language we gain the connotation that he is going to be a main character but he carries characteristics of being an awkward personal who has little or no self confidence!

Narrative!

At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers he can travel in time. The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim's father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can't change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own lifeso he decides to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend. Genre!

The 2010 movie submarine is a British coming-of-age, comedy-drama and romance we can see this through a number of basic elements,. For example we understand the film is a coming of age as he wants to lose his virginity and that is a crucial stage in life for young people, we can identify that it is a comedy as we have various pieces of diegetic sound (dialogue) and the comments he comes out with. We can also identify its a romance by the various camera shots of kissing and other intimate events.

There are various conventions within the film that suggest that the genre of this film is what it is. From the use of colours such as Red we relate this to love and passion and this is an ingredient that is placed within romance films to give its characteristic of being a romance film. Also through various features like the costumes of the actors we can relate this film to an indie audience as the costumes aren't seen as mainstream and are individual to the person, for example if we look at the two characters we see that they both have funky shaped glasses. As of this we conclude that the props that they use are individual to the specific characters and leads us to a conclusion of the

AUDIENCE!

Through various scenes and the overall look at the film we can identify that the audience for this film is going to be a wide audience but also have a specific niche audience.

When looking at the audience of this specific film there are a lot of people to consider. The first is that this particular film has niche audience and this audience is an indie audience. We can see this through the various props and costumes that are used. When categorising the audience who would be most suitable for this film is difficult due to the nature of the niche audience. However C2,D,E would most likely be interested in this film as they arent people who are majorly formal and will have a sufficient amount of disposable income to watch the film. It would not be directed to people of a higher economic group as they may find that the film is too informal for them. I think that this film is directed at mainly females but does attract a mixed audience as the film involves a couple. I would say that the targeted age range is from 1530s as the film is based on coming of age and the vocabulary that is used would be used by the youth and also the characters that are in the film are of a young age. Also the two main characters engage in various sexual events which may be deemed interesting by todays youth society!

representation

When looking at representation within this film the main factors that will be explored. 1. The indie lifestyle and clothing 2. The stereotypes of being a couple and being in a relationship 3. The era that the film is based in as its not overly modern due to features of clothing and decorations within the households!

When looking at the Indie lifestyle there is a lot of representation that are given off. When being indie you dont follow mainstream morals, values and norms you attempt to adopt your own identity to stand out and be different and be INDIVIDUAL hence the name. This fashion style is different to others and represents the people who follow this lifestyle as different and laid back as the dont want to stand out as they are trying to be there own person. The idea of a couple is represented in different ways as the couple are very intimate but also do have problems which goes against the stereotype of couples being in love and having no problems. Also when looking at the dominant person within the relationship, the common stereotype of the male being dominant has been subverted as the girl controls him more than anything. Also when looking at the era of when the film was set we see that everything is old fashioned and there dates are indicative to that time period.

Media language!

When looking at the media language, there are a lot of elements that we have to consider such as camera angles, shot types, movement, composition, Mise-en-scene, editing, pace and effects, diegetic and non-diegetic sound. As we can see in the pictures above that two shots are prominent throughout the movie. This indicates to us as an audience that the two subjects who are in the frame are main characters and are of importance! Also through the composition of characters we can easily break down a specific individuals body language and what he/she is feeling which gives off a provocative reaction to us as viewers. Also when looking at the trailer there is a soundtrack that is of French background, the pace of this is calm and slowly builds up to a climax, this indicates that we should expect things to start slow and escalate to a peak! Also through the shot shown above where he is peaking around we can gain a lot of connotations and make our own decisions to what atmosphere or emotion the directors want us to feel.

Narrative!

The overall story line is Precocious Oliver struggles with being popular in school but when a dark-haired beauty takes interest in him, he's determined to become the best boyfriend in the world. Meanwhile, his parents' already rocky relationship is threatened when his mother's ex-boyfriend moves in next door. Oliver makes some unorthodox plans to ensure that his parents stay together and that Jordana still likes him. The binary opposites that are predominately shown in this film is love & hate. This is due to the fact the mom and dad are having disputes, however the son wants to keep them together and wants to love his new girlfriend. It is difficult to apply props theory to this narrative as there are only a small amount of characters that are involved within this film and as we are basing thoughts on a trailer its hard to identify all characters! Todorovs theory applied: Equilibrium- Oliver just living a normal life and going on as normal Dis-equilibrium- Oliver's parents not having sex in 7 months and him trying to discover who he is. Recognition- flipping coins, smoking pipes and engaging in other activities to find himself

Potential audience!
When identifying my potential audience for my production, I have to take into consideration a number of factors. For example I have to look at various demographics and psychographics which includes: gender, age, employment status, socio-economic groups, trends, values and the primary and secondary audience. I have concluded that the potential primary audience for my production would be the older grouped teens. Starting at a base age of 15. This is due to that I plan to involve scenes within the contents of my production that may not be suitable for a younger audience. The gender that my production will be mainly be based on is males. This is also due to the contents of my production and the nature of the film will be a male dominated production and the themes that are portrayed throughout will be understood by the majority of males who watch it. When looking at employment status and socio-economic grouping for the potential audience of my production the employment status is an inadequate factor as I want my audience to be as broad as possible and I personally think that people of all statuses and economic groups will be interested depending on their mind-set. They will be vaguely interested in urban drama and crime and will enjoy watching films of a social realist genre. If they are interested in the social realist genre they will therefore understand what society is like and have an in depth knowledge of certain problems in society that can be addressed in this production to engage them as a whole more. They will be

Questionnaire!

From the results I obtained from my questionnaire I have found that the majority of people asked are of a male gender. Therefore this gives me a more male dominated response when looking at the results I get and to focus more on a male dominated audience which will suit my overall plot production more adequately.

When looking at my results I can clearly see the majority of people asked were in the age category of 17 to 19 and the second most was 20+ and then 15 to 16 year olds and then finally with a low 5% 12 to 14 year olds this shows that the audience I need to be focusing on is a audience who are older than 16. this is good because I can involve adult scenes that may not be suitable for younger audiences.

From the question what is your preferred genre? I have came to conclusion of crime being a more favoured genre throughout the people asked. Then comedy coming in second!

From the results I got back I found most people go the cinema twice a month and then either 3 times or once. So from this I have made a conclusion that marketing of the production to my target audience is

From asking this question I found that most people asked were from a E,D or C2 background therefore showing that my audience and not majorly formal people and I will have to feature values from these groupings within my

When I collected my results I got a varied opinion on what make a good movie. The general response was following a mainstream idea but it stands out from others and has social realism so that people can relate to it. Also people wanted something different but not to obscure. Which gives me a rough idea on what to include in the production. The majority of people said that they enjoyed this type of film and said that they all have a similar narrative but if made right it doesnt effect the production. From this I can use various narratives and plots from other films to help structure my own production.

From the understanding of the results I got the majority of people said the youth are thuggish, party crazed, drug users, violent, antisocial and from this these are all factors that can be elaborated on or gone against to get a reaction from the potential audience.

When I asked this question the overall result I got back was that people were familiar with these genre and said they enjoyed watching them however they said it can either be amazing or a failure. With this information I plan to base my production around the findings.

The general response to this question was that the film will be successful if the film is made with the right conventions and right and good acting but if certain factors fail then the whole production will be a failure so I have to make sure

When asked this question most people said conventions of the film. That were violence, antisocial behaviour, darkness and an overall theme of un happiness. With this information I will make sure its involved to maximise the audience

Genre/ideas!
Urban: when considering going down the urban route it would be an easily accessible genre to use as the urban settings are easy to access and to work with and when looking a Mise-en-scene costumes are easy to gain access to and with the props they are also easy to obtain and as actors who will be featured in the production are familiar with the urban lifestyle and areas it is a great benefit. Also we can use various UK underground films as examples and follow certain traits portrayed in these productions. Also this would be suitable for the people who I plan to target as they will be familiar with these settings and the story line that is shown. This then gives me an even bigger chance to make my production a success. Also when trying to come up with narratives Crime: When looking at choosing this genre option there are a lot of things to include. Getting it will be easily to think of one due to binary opposites that can be used within and also it is more of access to various props may be difficult, however when looking for an ideal setting as it is such a sub genre that is explored. broad genre anywhere will be appropriate for this genre. With characters they could be anyone so that factor is good for choosing this choice and because there are various twist that can be applied within the production it makes it a good choice to be chosen. Also from the results I got back from my market research I found that the majority of people I asked were interested in this genre and therefore will increase the chances of my production being successful and as in the movie industry crime is featured in 60% of films! It is a generic genre that people will enjoy! Also when looking at developing narratives for this a lot of media logical theories can be applied like Todorov's narrative theory, Claude Levi-Strauss binary opposites and Vladimir Romance: when looking at this genre there are a number of factors that make it hard to Propps character roles! accomplish as you need a female lead role and it is hard to find an open female who is able to perform conventions that may be featured within this genre. Also with this genre you need props and costumes that are appropriate and to gain access to them personally is hard! So this makes this genre not suitable for us as a group! When looking at my audience it is quiet predictable that they wont be interested in this genre as from my research people have said they enjoy dark films or comedies and only 10% said other which includes a range of film genres. When looking at creating the narrative from the constraints above its hard to create a narrative as the amount of varied

Narrative outlines!
Time frame: This production will be based on an up and coming drug dealer and him and his friend have been
given a big delivery from their drug supplier and he demands that they sell all the drugs within a selected time frame. What they dont know is that the supplier they got the drugs off stole them. So they come across various encounters being chassed by the other drug gang and things get pretty scary! When applying Claude Levi Strauss's The binary opposites are the people who are good and bad and there is also young vs old and innocent vs corrupt! This in itself will make the story line and production more interesting. When applying Todorov's theory the various equilibriums can be achieved easily, which are the first equilibrium where all actors involved are going about their day to day running's without any problems, then there is a Dis-Equilibrium when the other gang find out that their drug stock has been stolen! They then decide to go and track down the boys and then the action starts To escalate. The recognition stage in this is when the boys are tipped off that there are several people looking for them from one gang and decide that as a group they need to act upon it. Then the repair is the group of boys selling all the stock and going back to their supplier and telling him that they need to pay the other gang and giving back all the money! When looking at Propp's character roles The typical characters he found were: The Hero a character that seeks something that would be the first boy in this production, this is because even though he gets himself into trouble he saves his friend from getting into trouble that isnt intentionally his fault. The Villain who opposes or actively blocks the heros quest. This is the rival drug gang as the leader of the gang was trying to stop the boys from selling the drugs and making money. The Donor who provides an object with magical properties. Even though according to the definition in this production the donor is a fellow friends of the boys who practically bails them out by giving the boys weapons to protect themselves from the rival members. The Dispatcher who sends the hero on his/her quest via a message. This is the initial supplier who gives the boys the set of drugs and then tells them to sell all of the stock and bring back a return in money. The False Hero who disrupts the heros success by making false claims. This is the a fellow friend of the boys who the delivers the money that the have accumulated to the dealer but then the truth is told and he finds himself in a worse position than the original people. The Helper who aids the hero this is one of the suppliers friends who assists the boys and tells them a few links that will want to buy some of the drugs off of him and this then help the overall situation. When looking at the representation types that will be given off the group that will be shown in the production will be the youth and within this production they will have a negative label attached to them and this will be carried through the film until the end. Also they will carry a label of being un lawful as the engage in activities that aren't legal. Also through the use of music you will be able to identify where they could be potentially getting this mind-set of turning to drugs from. The institutions that would be interested

Narrative outlines!
Reality:
This production known as reality would be an urban drama that involves crime, drama and comedy but sticks to the overall theme of crime and drama. This drama is about a boy who Is in his own fantasy world who thinks he is a big shot and is on the streets thinking that he cannot be touched. He has been told all through his life that he is a wimp, p*ssy and various other words in a negative way and then he decides to go against all these words and start engaging in anti social behaviour. However from the actions that he has been displaying on the streets the wrong sort of people start to hear about him and his name then starts to circulate around peoples areas and they then get involved in a negative way. This boy only has a few friends but they end up turning their back on him due to them not agreeing on how he goes about his day to day actions and life. He is then brought to reality and he then realises that the life he has been living is all just a big fantasy world that was not acceptable to society. This film is a gripping urban drama that is aimed towards young people and the slightly older generation. When applying Strauss's binary opposites there is intentional vs unintentional as the boy who thinks he is a big shot doesn't realise that he is doing this and it is having a negative effect on the people around him. There is old vs young. Due to the fact that he is just a young boy and doesn't know that their are people who are obviously going to be bigger and mentally and physically stronger than him. There is also fake vs true. This is due to the fact that the friends who turned his back on him are obviously fake because they arent down to ride with him through the bad times and only want to share to good times, however the boy within this has one friend who sticks with him until the end. Todorov's narrative theory can be applied in this narrative. As the first equilibrium is when the boys are all friends and the one main boy is doing what he does even though its negative it is still one stage. The Disequilibrium is when the other people who have been effected start to retaliate to the actions that he has been doing on the streets. The recognition of this is when the boy who thinks he is bad gets rushed by a previous victim, and then realises he cant be letting this happen on a regular basis. The repair for this is that he calms down his antics and decides that he is not about that life and wants to restore peace. So he then gets in contact with the previous victims and attempts to apologise so that he isnt a threat to them and he cant be harmed by the people they know. The New-Equilibrium is this new mind-set that the boy is in and realizes that his actions weren't acceptable. Then he changes up his whole attitude and begins a new life reality. When looking at Propps character roles they can be identified within the narrative. As The Hero is the first boy this is due to fact that he wants to be the biggest and baddest person on road. There are several Villains within the narrative as all of his victims are the villains. The Donor is this boys close friend. This is due that he assists him when he is in troubled moments and when people have come to cause him harm. The Dispatcher- the dispatcher or dispatchers are the people who have been saying that he is

Narrative outlines!
Live fast die young:
This production know as live fast die young is about a group of friends who have minimal ambitions in life, and the only thing they are interested in is crime, drugs, parties and sex. Due to this lifestyle they end up becoming unaware of the people who are trying to help them and then get involved with the wrong people and wrong drugs. They then end up going down the wrong pathways individually and all end up killing themselves through overdosing and then performing actions that end in the darkest places of their lives individually. When looking at the various narrative theories Levi Strauss binary opposites can be applied for example; good vs bad as there are the boys who are involved in drugs and then their other friends who stay away from being involved in them activities. There is also educated vs un-educated as the boys who are involved in the drugs think that the only thing they will get from these drugs is positives that are long time and do not realise that they are damaging their bodies on the inside. Whereas the educated ones are the boys who dont get involved in the drugs and decide to stay away from it as they know that the effects from these drugs are life threatening. Also when looking at Todorov's theory we can identify the various equilibriums the first equilibrium is where they are going about their day to day individual lives even though they are taking drugs it doesnt cause a Dis-equilibrium. The Dis-equilibrium is where they start to get physically ill and the people around them start to see this. The recognition is where the friends and family of the drug users can see that they need attention and help to overcome this problem. The repair phase is where they send their friends to go get help from various rehab institutions and take all of the drugs off them and dispose of them. The new equilibrium is where the 3 people who were previously hooked on drugs are no longer and are officially clean. When looking at Propps character roles the hero is one of the friends who initiates each individual to getting help, the villains as you would call it is the individuals who are on the drugs and are rebelling against the friends who are attempting to help them. The donor is the doctor who advises various ways to the boys to help their friends come off the drugs. The dispatcher is lead friend of the friends who are taking the drugs as he understands/recognises that the boys need help and then send everyone to find ways to help them.. When looking at the various representation types that would be given off in this production you have to representation types there is the positive of the youth and the negative view on them. The positive view is that not all the youth are the same and not all of the coincide with the stereotypes the negative representation is that the youth are a drug, party and sex crazed generation due to the various actions the boys are involved in. Institutions that would be interested would be institutions like the uk film council as they could give us a potential budget to film the production And also private investors as they are guaranteed to make a return from our production as most of the productions that are similar to this have a wide audience who are interested in watching films like this and if we
