Public Interest Lecture Series Luncheon: Sarah Wood Borak Thursday, October 17th
Dedicated to advocacy on behalf of indigent clients, Miami Scholars magna cum laude graduate, Sarah Wood Borak 05, will share her story and the path of becoming a public defender, as well as her work, in the private sector, as an attorney at Akerman Senterfitt, in the Environmental Section. Sarah has the distinction of having served as the first ever Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow at the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center and the Miami-Dade Public Defenders Office. ABA National Task Force Southeast Regional Hearing on Stand Your Ground Laws Thursday, October 17th
You are cordially invited to attend and/or present testimony at a significant public forum concerning the proliferation of Stand Your Ground Laws, which have substantially expanded the contours of self-defense law in over half of jurisdictions in the United States and received increased national attention in connection with recent high-profile cases. Expert witnesses drawn from local and regional community and government stakeholders, law enforcement prosecutors, public and private criminal defense attorneys, and legal academicians will testify on the impact of Stand Your Ground laws in the Southeast region, where several states have enacted similar expanded selfdefense statutes. 6pm-8pm at HistoryMiami, 101 W Flagler St, Miami, FL 33130.

Public Interest and Pro Bono Networking Breakfast Monday, October 21st
Join us for a breakfast with public interest lawyers, private lawyers engaged in pro bono work and members of the bench, to celebrate Pro Bono Week and discuss the many pathways to meaningful practice. The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service chose to launch this important initiative because of the increasing need for pro bono services during these harsh economic times and the unprecedented response of attorneys to meet this demand. The National Pro Bono Celebration can be an effective strategic tool for enhancing and expanding local efforts to increase access to justice for all. Volunteer with the Miami Book Fair International Now - November 24th
Calling all book lovers! The Miami Book Fair International needs volunteers in the weeks leading up to the Fair; as well as each day of actual Fair which is in mid-November. The shifts are in 3 hour incrementsyou can sign up for as many or as few as you want. You can pick the area you want to volunteer in. Volunteers assist transporting the authors, working in the childrens alley, ushering, autographing and generally working with the authors. All volunteers will get a free t-shirts. National Immigrant Integration Conference Sunday, November 17th Tuesday, November 19th

LOG YOUR HOURS for pro bono advocacy and community service! Congratulations to the hundreds of students who made the choice to begin the year with service through HOPE DAY. Over 800 hours of community service were logged by participants for their work across Miami-Dade County on August 16th. Take the HOPE pledge of performing 75 hours or more of pro bono advocacy and community service in law school. Like the UM HOPE Facebook Page!
