Hamilton-Hildesheim Exchange 2014-2015

A GAPP Exchange Program

What is GAPP?
Government supported program to strengthen and

maintain German-American ties. A FREE program. If all guidelines are met, GAPP gives our school a grant that helps to subsidize our trip.

Why GAPP?
An exchange program in the truest form. Helps keep our trip affordable.

How long has this program been in existence?

Hamilton High has had this exchange with Hildesheim for 32 years.

Where is our host school?

The Michelsenschule is located in Hildesheim,

Germany.

What kind of school is our partner school?

Michelsenschule is a Gymnasium, which means that it is a college preparatory school. All students at the school are expected to be college-bound unless they do not pass their final examinations.

How long is a GAPP exchange?

Minimum of 21 days Minimum of ten school days.

What does the trip normally cost?

Traditionally it costs around $2500.00 dollars. If you save $41.00 a week from now until the

trip, you should have enough to travel. That could be one night of babysitting a week, a few less meals out, etc. Normally it is recommended that the student bring between 200-300 Euros (300-400 US

Dollars) in extra spending money.

Does my child need a passport to travel? YES! Are scholarships available? If there is great need, it is possible.
The hosting experience are we qualified to be a host?

student in a single-sex room. Treat the student like a member of the family. You must feed, house, and transport your student. If you feel like going above and beyond, GREAT. If not the student will still have a great experience!

When are they going to be here?

Tentatively scheduled for October 18 November 8, 2014 The plan is to travel to Chicago as a group to meet the students, explore Chicago a bit, and then come back to Michigan for the rest of the experience.

What is a secondary host?

If you cannot have someone in your house but your

child still wants to go to Germany, I can match them up as a secondary host so that they can still get involved during the homestay period.

Secondary hosts can also be backup hosts in case an

emergency situation arises.

What do I need to do to be a host?

By March 7th, return the: host family application form. three recommendation forms. compatible student information form. Behavior Policy

How do I get matched up with a host?

You will fill out the compatability information sheet from the booklets of girls or guys that want to come to Hamilton. From there, Frau Stieper and Frau Reinecke will ultimately make the decision that seems best for the entire group.

HOST FAMILY FORMS ARE DUE TH March 7 .

NEXT MEETING OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR TBD. WISH TO CONTRIBUTE YOUR TIME? JUST ASK! Traveling to Hildesheim
What to expect

The biggest benefit to our exchange program is the fact that it is a true exchange. It is very encouraged to be a part of both the hosting and traveling parts of the experience. Travel
*

Date to decide on Travel will be October1st of this coming year.

Students must obtain recommendations from other teachers in order to travel as well. (different from hosting) Probably no more than 25 students will be allowed to travel. Priority is given to those students who hosted. I will not turn down a student that hosts unless there are other disciplinary issues.
