A total of 285 regular firearms moose season permits and 50 archery moose season permits will be issued for Vermonts 22nd annual October moose hunt under a proposed regulation approved by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board at their February 26 monthly meeting in Montpelier. The board voted on a proposal presented by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department that allocates permits in 16 of the states 21 Wildlife Management Units. The proposed regulation must be voted on at one more Board meeting in early April. The 285 regular season permits proposed by the department represent a 20 percent decrease from the 355 permits issued last year. Under the proposal, hunters are expected to harvest close to 150 moose during the regular season hunt. We recommended a reduction in permits this year based on the biological data we have collected on Vermonts moose and our calculated population estimates indicating moose densities are below management goals in some areas, said biologist Cedric Alexander, Vermonts moose project leader. Its the intent of this proposal to allow slow population growth in some regions while continuing to stabilize moose numbers elsewhere. Alexander estimates Vermont has 2,500 moose statewide with the greatest concentration in the Northeast Kingdom. We also want to take a conservative approach given recent regional and national trends of moose populations and health, added Alexander.

Fish & Wildlife Board Sets Permit Numbers for 2014 Moose Hunt

Moose biologists from the southern tier of moose range across North America are increasingly concerned about the effects of warming temperatures on moose health. Moose can easily become stressed by both warmer weather causing them to feed less and early spring snow melt that results in higher winter tick loads the following year. Fifty permits are proposed for Vermonts special archery-only moose season to be held October 1-7. For the first time, archery permits are not authorized on a statewide basis, but by Wildlife Management Units to better manage the harvest. Hunters are expected to take close to 15 moose during this season. Moose hunting permit lottery applications, $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents, will be available on Vermont Fish & Wildlifes website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) in mid-April. Printed applications will be at license agents in early June. Applicants are encouraged to review their Wildlife Management Unit selections closely as the boundaries of several of the units have changed. Two lotteries will be held, one for the regular hunting season and one for the archery season. Winners of either lottery must purchase resident hunting permits for $100 or nonresident hunting permits for $350. Hunters also will have the option to bid on five moose hunting permits in an auction to be announced later.

The Fish & Wildlife Department is seeking volunteers who would like to pass on the tradition of fishing to the next generation of Vermonters. The department will be hosting two one-day training workshops for Lets Go Fishing instructors on Saturday, March 29, at the Kehoe Education Center in Castleton, and on Saturday, April 5, at Fish & Wildlifes regional office in Essex Junction. Instructors in the Lets Go Fishing program organize and instruct clinics in their communities for young people and their families. Participants in the training workshops will learn how to teach a fishing clinic, in addition to learning about fishing ethics, aquatic ecology, fisheries management, habitat conservation, and tackle craft. Classes are informal, and it is not necessary to have a high level of fishing expertise to become an instructor. Get involved and get our youth outdoors! Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission has been awarded a grant from the Ecosystem Restoration Program Watershed Management Division of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. CVRPCs grant is for the creation of a River Corridor Plan that will help to highlight strategies for river corridor protection and flood hazard mitigation. All told there are 24 river miles that have been identified for geomorphic assessment and FEH zone creation. CVRPC has contracted with Bear Creek Environmental to conduct the phase 2 geomorphic assessment, write the River Corridor Plan, and assist with the creation of the FEH zone. Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission is a planning organization established by the 23 municipalities in the Central Vermont Region focusing on technical assistance on land use and transportation planning, resource mapping, and special projects such as brownfield assessments, hazard mitigation planning, and food systems planning. Feeding birds in the winter is a lot of fun, but it can also cause diseases to spread quickly among wild birds, which is why the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says it is important to clean your birdfeeders regularly. Bacteria and fungi can cause diseases such as aspergillosis, salmonella and conjunctivitis. Species commonly affected by bird feeder diseases are redpolls, pine siskins, goldfinches, sparrows, and cardinals. All feeders should be thoroughly cleaned on a monthly basis. A solution of one part bleach to nine parts hot water is recommended to kill bacteria. Hot water with unscented dish detergent also does an excellent job. Wear rubber gloves to avoid any contamination. Be sure to clean inside and outside surfaces. Bottle brushes work well in tube feeders. It is very important to thoroughly rinse and dry your feeder to prevent residual chlorine from being ingested by birds. Then, dry the feeders well before filling them again. Any remaining

Brad Keselowski and team Penske ruled the weekend to sweep at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Keselowski positioned in the right place at the right time, won Sundays Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran out of gas half a lap from the end of the race. Keselowski powered his No. 2 Penske Racing Ford past Earnhardt on the backstretch on the 267th and final lap to win the 11th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race of his career and become the third different winner in as many races this season, virtually locking him in the Chase for the Sprint Cup under NASCARs new Winners Take All format. Keselowski joins previous 2014 winners Earnhardt Jr and Kevin Harvick in the win tracker column. Keselowski missed the 2013 Chase as the defending champion a thought that was already on his mind immediately after the finish. Locked in the Chase early, Keselowski said. I dont have to hear all that crap about not being in the Chase. Earnhardt became just the fifth driver in the modern era (since 1972) to start a season with three consecutive top-two finishes. Three of the previous four went on to win the championship Jimmie Johnson in 2006, Cale Yarborough in 1977, Richard Petty in 1974; while Dale Jarrett finished third in 1996.Paul Menard finished third in front of Keselowskis teammate, pole-sitter Joey Logano. Carl Edwards was fifth. Keselowski has put together finishes of third at Daytona, third at Phoenix and Sundays win to begin the season. In the closing laps of Saturdays Boyd Gaming 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch was close enough to make Brad Keselowski uncomfortable. It didnt help that Keselowskis engine sputtered when the voltage in his battery dropped dangerously low. But Keselowski built a big enough lead after a restart on Lap 168 of 200 to ward off Buschs charge in the closing stages of the race. Keselowskis first win of the season, his first at LVMS and the 28th of his career left Busch, a Las Vegas native, frustrated in his 11th futile attempt to win a Nationwide Series race on home turf. Busch was runner-up for the second straight year and third time overall. Kyles one of the best in the business, and he deserves a win here, and hes been real close, just like we have, said Keselowski, who was leading on the final lap in 2011 before a blown tire knocked him back to third. These races arent getting any easier to win. I drove as hard as I could every lap, knowing that Kyle was coming there, especially at the end. We were having some troubles with the engine there, and I knew it was just a matter of time before he caught me. I was just trying to get through as much traffic as I could and extend that time and was counting down the laps. It felt good that everything worked out at the end. Kyle Larson ran third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and rookie Chase Elliott. Matt Kenseth, Brian Scott, Trevor Bayne, Chris Buescher and Regan Smith completed the top 10, leaving Smith and Bayne tied for the series points lead. Jean-Francois Dry put together possibly the most consistent championship season in the history of the Srie ACT on his way to the 2013 title. After coming up just short in 2012, the hunger for his first career championship was apparent each and every week. He claimed a win in the season-opening even at Circuit Riverside Speedway, but it wasnt until his second win of the season at Autodrome St-Eustache that he claimed the point lead. Once he gained the lead, he never let it go as he finished the season with a string of five straight podium finishes to claim the title. Jessey Mueller is ready to be a champion. The 19-year-old Modified stock car driver will enter the Spring Green season opener at Vermonts Devils Bowl Speedway on Sunday, May 4 with just one goal: Winning. Mueller was rather matter-of-fact about his plans: Were going to try to win every race thats the only reason we show up, Mueller recently said. After winning nine races last summer, including four in the Bond Auto Parts Modified division at Devils Bowl, Mueller and his family team have been working in the off-season to improve their program at their Olmstedville, NY home base. Entries continue to roll in for the 2014 oxford 250. It appears that interest is at an all-time high for the 250 this year exclaimed Oxford Plains Speedway President Tom Mayberry. Its only early March and we have thirty drivers from the Northeast, Canada and North Carolina already pre-registered for one of the most heralded Super Late Model races in the country! The competition for this event just keeps getting better. Two time and defending ACT champion and multi-time Lee USA Speedway Late Model champion will be doing a considerable amount of Super Late Model racing in 2014 and will be attempting to qualify for his first ever Super Late Model attempt at the Oxford 250. NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Darrell Wallace Jr. still spent some quality time with fans last week and dropped off the truck he drove to Victory Lane during last Octobers Kroger 200 at Martinsville at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. Wallace was the first African-American driver to win a NASCAR national series event since Wendell Scott won a NASCAR premier series race in 1963. Bubba is a graduate of NASCARs Drive for Diversity program.

Tied for second with nine wins each is Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and Cale Yarborough. Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch are the current drivers with the most wins with five apiece. Junior Johnson is the all-time winningest car owner at Bristol Motor Speedway with 21 wins. Second on the list is Jack Roush with nine.
