GEOGRAPHY
Ireland is a sovereign
state in Europe
occupying about five-
sixths of the island of
Ireland. The capital and
largest city is Dublin,
located in the eastern part
of the island. Ireland is a
unitary, parliamentary
republic with an elected
president serving as head
of state.
HISTORY

Founded as a Viking settlement, the Kingdom
of Dublin became Ireland's principal city following
the Norman invasion. The city expanded rapidly
and was briefly the second largest city in the British
Empire. Following the partition of Ireland, Dublin
became the capital of the Irish Free State and later
the Republic of Ireland.
Dublin is a historical and contemporary centre
for education, the arts, administration, economy and
industry and for much time it has been Ireland's
principal city and the cultural, educational and
industrial centre of the island.

Leopold Bloom and
Bloomsday
Who was Leopold Bloom?
Leopold Bloom is the fictional protagonist
and hero of James Joyce's Ulysses.
Leopold Bloom's character was inspired
by James Joyce's close relationship with Aron
Ettore Schmitz, author of Zeno's Conscience.
Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold
Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary
day, 16 June 1904. Joyce fans worldwide now
celebrate 16 June as Bloomsday.

The day involves a range of cultural activities
including Ulysses readings and dramatisations, pub crawls and
other events. Enthusiasts often dress in Edwardian costume to
celebrate Bloomsday, and retrace Bloom's route around Dublin
via landmarks such as Davy Byrne's pub.

The significance of Hurling and
Gaelic football
Hurling and Gaelic football occupy a special place in
the countrys social fabric as ancient games whose
renaissance was connected with the struggle for
independence.
Hurling
Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient
Gaelic and Irish origin. The game has prehistoric
origins and is considered to be the world's fastest field
sport. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a
number of features with Gaelic football, such as the
field and goals, number of players, and much
terminology.

Gaelic football
Gaelic football , commonly referred to as football
or Gaelic, is an Irish team sport. It is a form of football
derived from traditional Irish ball games. It is played
between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass
pitch.
Sports events
The highlight of the sporting year for Gaelic games is
the All-Ireland Senior Hurling and Football Finals held at Croke
Park Stadium in Dublin on two Sundays two weeks apart in
September. If you cant get to a match yourself , the best place to
get a flavour of these two passionately suported games is the
Croke Park GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) Museum.
Pub Crowl
What is a pub crawl?
A pub crawl is a tour of a number of pubs in a single
night, normally walking between them.
Pubs are the temples of Irish traditional music culture. The
Traditional Irish Musical Pub Crawl is led by two professional
musicians who perform tunes and songs while telling the story of
Irish Music and it's influences on contemporary world music.
Guinness is a traditional Irish stout beer made
from roasted barley, hops, yeast, and water. The deep
color and caramelized flavor that are characteristic of
Guinness come from barley that has been roasted but
not malted. The thick, creamy head that Guinness is well
known for is achieved by mixing the beer with nitrogen,
which creates smaller bubbles and thus a thicker head.
Although the company is now based in London,
Guinness was first produced in Dublin.
A new study in the Journal of Food
Science provides some limited scientific evidence to
support the theory among beer enthusiasts that
Guinness tastes much better in Ireland than other parts
of the world.
