Chapter Summaries

Chapters 1-3

In chapter one, Llewellyn Moss is out hunting in the desert, but then arrives to what
appears to be a drug deal gone terribly wrong. There Moss sees dead bodies and guns lying
around near them, and blood, and bullet holes in the truck. There in the trucks moss finds a very
large amounts of heroin but leaves it alone. He also finds a half dead man begging him for water
and telling that there are lobos but Moss decides to leave him alone. Eventually Moss stumbles
across a case, and finds out that the case is containing about two million dollars. Moss takes the
money and leaves quickly. Mpss returns home to find his wife who notices him acting strange
and asks but Moss refuses to budge. Later on, Moss gets around midnight to go back to the scene
and also brings water for the man. Only to find that he is dead and that someone else has spotted
him. He runs away and manages to escape but has gotten shot in the arm in the process. He gets
home and tells his wife that their leaving so she better pack up and only take what she needs.

Later on a sheriff by the name of Tom Bell investigates the scene and finds guns and
drugs and takes them for investigation. Also, he finds Mosss truck and recognizes that it is
Mosss truck.
Earlier and man named Chigurh, a hitman goes to the drug deal and investigates Mosss
truck and even takes the license plate to track him down. He goes to Mosss home and knocks
but no answers back to the knock. He eventually decides to shoot the handle to break in. He
investigates the home, but comes to find that it is completely empty. He finds a letter addressed
to Moss and takes it, and uses it to track him down.
Moss ends up in an area called Fort Stockton while his wife stays with her mother, and
converses with her through a telephone, and warn each other to be careful.
Bell ends up going to Mosss home to find the door broken and the casing of a bullet that
has been fired, and then comes up to the conclusion that someone is chasing Moss, and that Moss
was at the scene of the crime.
Moss ends up in area named Del Rio he rents a room, with the stolen money. He also
decides to go out and buy supplies like tent poles but also decides to buy a shotgun. Moss grabs
his supplies and prepares to defend his life at any cost.

Chapter 4-7

Bell was eating in the cafe then he and Wendell go to Moss's trailer. Bell noticed
the locks and they enter carefully, but no one seemed to be there. By Wednesday, news is
getting around. Reporters approach Bell at breakfast and on the way back to the crime scene,
Torbert reminds Bell that including Wyrick they now have a body count of ten. DEA agent
McIntyre came by helicopter at the crime scene. They checkout as to why Mosss truck was shot
up . The bodies are bloated and McIntyre makes a sketch of the scene. They both agree that if the
heroin is gone, and so is the cash, it makes sense that someone else is missing. When Bell gets
the reports, he tells Torbert he knows what happened, describing for him how a slaughterhouse
works.
Moss checks into the Hotel. He thinks about his situation, and then examines the money bag and
finds the transponder. He sets it to one side, and goes back down to the office. Moss makes a
deal with the clerk to call him if anyone check in for hundred dollars. The clerk agrees.Moss hide
the shotgun under his bed. Shortly after, he gets company. Moss manages to surprise him and
holding the gun on him manages to get away, but has no idea where he is.
Sheriff takes Carla for coffee and asks her where Moss is. She say that she has no clue where
Moss is. Sheriff Bell then explains to her how much trouble Llewelyn is in. She knows he can
take care of himself. He ask her if she and Moss are in trouble. Bell tell her that they can prevent
them for being killed by having Moss just turn in the money.They continue to talk and Bell tries
to talk her into an agreement but she just refuses.
Chigurh sets a car on fire to create a distraction so he can grab the materials that he needs. He
returns to the hotel to clean up his wounds. He stays at the hotel to recuperate but there was some
deputies that seems that they were spying on him.



Chapters 8-10

Bell begins to talk about how the growing problems aren't going away. Bells self respect goes
down because he is trying to make a difference and still things are getting out of hand and he
feels responsible. Moss and the hitchhiker go to the diner. Moss tells her about how his life was
before this entire situation went down and how he was just an average person working all the
time. Moss and the hitchhiker are murdered, but McCarthy doesn't provide a lot of information
about it but we learn a lot about it through Bells view.Bell went back to the hotel later that night
because he knew the money would be there and since the money was there Chigurh would be
too. But he was slightly cowardly and missed his opportunity.

Bell hints that Chigurh has killed Carla Jean. Chigurh goes and returns the money that Moss
had to the man it belongs to. Chigurh goes to kill Carla Jean after her mother's funeral.. Chigurh
gets into a car wreck. Bell goes to his Uncle Ellis's house. Bell tells him what happened when he
was fighting in the war .

Ellis had asked Bell what brought up his guilt over deserting his men. Bell replies that it was
always there. He wonders why God never came into Elliss life. He thinks that He does come
into the lives of those who need it most. He thinks of his uncle Harold, who never came home
from the war. Bell has his medal, but Uncle Harold got nothing. Bell goes out to the caldera one
more time. All he finds are some shell casings. He talks to his daughter, who would be thirty
years old if she had not died. He thinks people would think he is crazy, but he usually does what
he imagines his daughter would tell him to do.Then while Bell and Ellis are talking detective
from odessa calls to give some information on the gun that was used to kill Carla Jean.

Chapters 11-13

After retirement, Ed Tom Bell recollects his past, and the present. As he does so, he comes
to the realization that the world is changing to fast for him. The world is changing to fast for him,
and he does not fit in. He finally comes to the conclusion that this is no country for old men, and
this is no country for him.
