DESCRIPTIONS
CHRISTIES LIVE
ESTIMATES
are given for all lots and can be based on prices
recently paid at auction for comparable property.
They can take into account rarity, condition, quality
and provenance. The RESERVE is the price below
which a lot will not sell. Since it is confidential it is
not published in the catalogue.
The reserve will never exceed the low estimate.
CONDITION REPORTS
are available on request. These supplement the
catalogue description and provide guidance on a
lots condition.
SYMBOLS
next to the lot number can indicate a variety of
things, such as where the lot can be collected
after the sale or how much if any VAT is payable.
There is a key to symbols in the all you need to
know section at the back of this catalogue.

NICKY HASLAMS
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Surface glamour
Flat surfaces, especially console tables, look great bare
but better with things on and under them quite apart
from providing essential storage opportunities. Objects,
books and lamps anchor the surfaces to the walls, and
anything stashed underneath fills the void.
Lights fantastic
Its fun to have some visible light sources in a room,
especially sconces and wall brackets, and the keynote is
individuality.
Floral Dance
Some places cry out to be given the flower-bower
treatment, while others say, Get outta here. For the
former, I like to go the whole hog, preferably using the
same design on everything, uniting walls, curtains
and furniture, and usually adding a correspondingly
patterned carpet. The great secret is to avoid any stuff
with a twee floral design; go big and bold.
Making an Entrance
Halls set the tone of the house, providing an
introduction to the rooms that come after. They should
therefore be calmer, with strong elements of interest,
whether thats the biggest table that will fit, a fireplace
or a staircase.

Antun Augustincic was a prominent Croatian sculptor active in Yugoslavia. His most notable sculptures
include the Peace monument which stands in front of the United Nations building in New York City,
and the Miner statue in front of the International Labour Organization headquarters in Geneva.
The bronzes were owned by late General Ljubodrag Duric who was Chief of Cabinet to the late
President Tito, and Chief Commander of Belgrade after the end of World War II. The sculptures
were a personal gift from the sculptor to the General for his suggestion to President Tito that he be
given State commissions. In his book Sjecanja na ljude i dogadaje (Memories on the People and
Events), Belgrade 1989, chapter 62 he wrote So I suggested inviting Augustincic to cast us busts
of Marx, Engels and Lenin. Tito accepted immediately. For this order Augustincic gave me all three
busts as a gift that I am still keeping in my apartment

Andre Minaux studied at the Ecole des Arts Dcoratifs, Paris from
1941-5 and had his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie des
Impressions dArt, Paris in 1946. Minaux was a great draughtsman
and his time at the Ecole des Arts Dcoratifs mixed with his interest
in lithographs meant that he found a strong and bold simplicity
in his depiction of form. Figures, particularly women in interior
settings, became a key theme in his work, the work offered here
typifies that. Indeed there is a sculptural quality to the way in
which he depicts the female figure showing the growing influence
of Fernand Leger on his work as he moved away from naturalism
and became ever more figurative and stylised in his artistic output.

149 as Domenichino (3gns. to Barber).
Anonymous sale; Christies, London, 23 January 1981, lot 88.
Private Collection, Suffolk Manor house.
Although clearly derived from Domenichinos composition of the
Madonna della Rosa (dating to before 1627) in the Devonshire
Collection, Chatsworth, in the present lot there are very
numerous differences most notably to the background, the pose
of the Madonnas head and the absence of a veil.

The alabaster chimneypiece depicts the winged fgure of Time rewarding Industry and punishing
Sloth, symbolised by two boys, which is surmounted by a carved portrait of Sir Randolph Crewe
(15581646).
These designs for the Byzantine revival, Greek Orthodox cathedral in Bayswater, Central London
seem to be presentation drawings intended to be shown to the client for their approval of the
scheme. The church foundation stone was laid at the beginning of 1878 and the frst liturgy was
celebrated on the 1 June 1879. The designs for the interior decoration with the beautiful rendering
of the intended polychromatic marble decoration portray to some extent the elaborate decoration
that is now apparent and which the reserved exterior does not convey.

Anonymous sale; Christies, London, 15 February 1972, as Camels on the road near Senma [sic], lot 54.
ENGRAVED:
L. Haghe, lithographed for D. Roberts, The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia / from
drawings made on the spot by David Roberts ... ; London : F.G. Moon, 1842-1845, pl. 56.
The scene depicts Roberts party travelling toward Jerusalem past the ruins of Semua, between Wadi
Musa and Hebron, during his travels in the Holy Land in 1839. Presumably the work can be dated to 16
March of that year - as per the date given for the work in Haghes lithograph. The Rev. George Croly
in his text to accompany Roberts drawings notes the mention of the neighbourhood of Semua in the
bible in Joshua, 15:58. He goes on to state The ground around Semua is strewed with massy stones, the
remains of vast and ancient buildings, the only portion of which left standing is a tower, which lends a
singularly beautiful effect to the central view, as seen in this sketch (D.Roberts, op. cit. p. 18.)

Christies Interest
From time to time, Christies may offer a lot which it owns in
whole or in part. Such property is identified in the catalogue
with the symbol next to its lot number.
On occasion, Christies has a direct financial interest in lots
consigned for sale which may include guaranteeing a minimum
price or making an advance to the consignor that is secured
solely by consigned property. Such property is identified in the
catalogue by the symbol next to the lot number. This symbol
will be used both in cases where Christies holds the financial
interest on its own, and in cases where Christies has financed all
or a part of such interest through a third party. Such third parties
generally benefit financially if a guaranteed lot is sold successfully
and may incur a loss if the sale is not successful. Where Christies
has an ownership or financial interest in every lot in the
catalogue, Christies will not designate each lot with a symbol,
but will state its interest at the front of the catalogue.

LIMITED WARRANTY
In addition to Christies liability to buyers set out in
clause 2 of these Conditions, but subject to the terms
and conditions of this paragraph, Christies warrants
for a period of five years from the date of the sale that
any property described in headings printed in UPPER
CASE TYPE (i.e. headings having all capital-letter
type) in this catalogue (as such description may be
amended by any saleroom notice or announcement)
which is stated without qualification to be the work
of a named author or authorship, is authentic and
not a forgery. The term author or authorship
refers to the creator of the property or to the period,
culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with
which the creation of such property is identified in
the UPPER CASE description of the property in
this catalogue. Only UPPER CASE TYPE headings
of lots in this catalogue indicate what is being
warranted by Christies. Christies warranty does
not apply to supplemental material which appears
below the UPPER CASE TYPE headings of each
lot and Christies is not responsible for any errors or
omissions in such material. The terms used in the
headings are further explained in the All You Need
to Know section of the catalogue. The warranty does
not apply to any heading which is stated to represent
a qualified opinion.
The warranty is subject to the following:
i It does not apply where (a) the catalogue description
or saleroom notice corresponded to the generally
accepted opinion of scholars or experts at the
date of the sale or fairly indicated that there was a
conflict of opinions; or (b) correct identification of
a lot can be demonstrated only by means of either
a scientific process not generally accepted for use
until after publication of the catalogue or a process
which at the date of publication of the catalogue
was unreasonably expensive or impractical or likely
to have caused damage to the property.

Written Bids
1
All written bids are subject to the
Conditions of Sale and Notices printed
in the catalogue.
2
Although to be certain of buying a
lot you should attend the auction,
Christies will use reasonable efforts
to carry out written bids delivered to
us prior to the sale. A maximum price
should be given against each lot and
the auctioneer will bid on your behalf.
Written bids should be consistent with
the normal increment in bidding at the
relevant level.
3
If your bid is successful, the purchase
price payable will be the aggregate of
the final bid and a buyers premium of
25% on each lot up to and including
50,000 plus 20% of the excess
above 50,000 up to and including
1,000,000 plus 12% of any sum in
excess of 1,000,000, together with
any additional applicable charges, such
as VAT.
4
Please ensure you have left bids on
the correct lots and that your written
bids are received by no later than the
day before the sale begins. In certain
circumstances it may not be possible to
execute bids received after the start of
the sale.
5
If we receive written bids on a
particular lot for identical amounts,
and at the auction these are the
highest bids for the lot, it will be sold
to the person whose written bid was
received and accepted first. Written
bids submitted on no reserve lots
will, in the absence of a higher bid, be
executed at approximately 50% of the
low pre-sale estimate or at the amount
of the bid if it is less than 50% of the
low pre-sale estimate.
6
Please note that we do not accept
responsibility for notifying you of the
result of your bid and request that you
contact us after the sale for your result.
