LESSON PROGRESSION
Motivation and Introduction:
Tim
Have students seated.
e
Good morning year 7/8s. Today is our last lesson where we are learning the skills required to
11:00
play the game of volleyball. After today, well be learning about the roles of the behind the
3mins scenes people who are involved in making a volleyball tournament a success! Lets get
warmed-up, and then well go over lots of skills weve already learnt quite quickly to perfect
them, and then play a game
Take students onto the court (no net). Split class into two teams by numbering 1 or 2.Explain
the rules for dodge-ball and give a demonstration. Ensure all students understand.

Class Organisation
Goal: to throw a ball so it

team (below neck height).
Accurate throwing
Start with 3 balls.
Strategic throwing
If you are hit by a ball on the Quick on your feet

the court, behind the other
team's playing area When in
jail, you can try to hit an
opponent by having balls
passed to you by your
players who are out of "jail."
If you do manage to hit a
player from the other team
while you are in jail, you can
run back to your team's
playing area.
If you catch someone's
attempt to hit you, then that
counts as a hit against
them.
Progressions/Regressions:

Bridging organisation
Stop students working and ask for balls away and then eyes on me. Split the class into groups
of 3. Explain the skill, give a demonstration and ensure all students understand.

Perfect Passes
A tosser serves the ball to a
passer. The passer digs the
ball to the target. Target
volleys the ball over the net
to the tosser, and then the
tosser volleys to the passer
to keep the ball going. If
they can successfully
complete this 3 times, they
rotate positions. Repeat
until all 3 students have had
a go in each position.
Progression:
2v1- tosser must run to
receive the ball, and
send it again to passer

Key Teaching Points

Accurate throwing
Correct form
Teamwork
Choose appropriate
pass
Soft knees
Arms extend to target

Bridging organization
Stop students working and divide them into pairs. Ensure each pair has one ball between
them.
Explain the next skill, give a demonstration and ensure all students understand.
Ready to Go
Key Teaching Points
Aim: To teach readiness
posture for quick reactions.
Stay low
Person A with the ball
Feet wide
stands behind B who is in
Be faster than the ball
readiness posture. A, rolls
the ball through Bs feet or
tosses the ball over Bs
head. As soon as B sees the
ball, they quickly chase it
Set partners up all over the court
and stop it. Swap over each
turn.
Progressions/Regressions:
Add the net- send over
the top
Increase/decrease
distance partners stand
from each other
Add another ball

Bridging organization
Stop students working. Keeping the same pairs and equipment, move everyone to the net,
explain the next drill, give a demonstration and ensure all students understand.

Pairs Caterpillar Catch

Pairs start at the edge of the
court one on each side of
the net, and volley the ball
over the net to their partner,
as they side step towards
the other edge of the court.
Once they get to the end,
they run back to the first
side and repeat. After 3
turns this way, they start at
the edge they were finishing
at, and side-step back the
other way.
Progressions:
Stand further back from
the net
Practice different passes
(from different lengths of
space away)

Key Teaching Points

Quick on your feet

Soft hands
Soft knees
Eyes on the ball
Arms extended
Create a
window/triangle with
thumbs and index
fingers

Bridging organization
Stop students working. Separate the class into teams of 10 by merging 5 pairs. Explain the
game and ensure all students understand.
Modified Game
Divide the class into teams of
10 players. 2 teams position
themselves on either side of
the net. The third team
positions themselves around
the court and acts as line
judges, ball retrievers,
referees or can be used for
peer assessment. One team
starts with the ball. The game
begins with one student
serving from the back corner
of the court. Students on the
receiving team try to catch or
set the ball before it touches
the ground. After catching the
ball, without moving, the
student can either throw or
set it over the net or throw or
set it to another team-mate.
Teams can throw or set the
ball up to 3 times before they
send it back over to the other
team. A team scores a point
if: the ball lands on the
ground of the opposing sides
court, the opposing team fails
to serve the ball over the net
after two consecutive
attempts, a team makes more
than 3 touches or the ball
lands out of bounds. Teams
score points irrespective of

Key Teaching Points

student needs in

whether they are the serving

team or not. If a point is
scored, the team that gets
the point then gains
possession of the ball and a
player on that team gets to
serve. When a team loses
possession of the serve the
new serving team rotates
positions so everyone on the
team has a turn serving the
ball. The game continues until
one team gets to 11 points.
Swap teams so that each
team gets to play each other.
Variation: instead of using the
set, players can catch and
throw only.
Bridging organisation
Stop students playing; ask for equipment to be brought back in and for students to take a seat
in front of me.

Lesson Closure: (Review lesson objectives with students)

Revise key teaching points and ensure all students are confident with all types of passes.
Assess this by asking a number of students to stand up and tell me a pass, and then perform it
to me.
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
Ask students to reflect on 4 things they have learnt over the previous 4 lessons regarding
skills.
Ask students to find out 2 facts about volleyball that has not got something to do with how to
play the game i.e. how many players on a team, how many points are scored in certain
circumstances.
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
Assess students by watching and ensuring theyre performing the passes correctly as they
complete the skills and play the game. Give any student help who looks to not completely
understand a pass.
