Died: August 31, 1994 in San Francisco,

California, USA
Occupation: Doctor of Psychology
Known for: being the Father of Filipino
Psychology.

DEFINITION
Refers to the psychology born out of
the experience, thought and
orientation of the Filipinos, based on
the full use of Filipino culture and
language.
Enriquez (1985) later defined
Sikolohiyang Pilipino as the study of
diwa (psyche), which in Filipino
directly refers to the wealth of ideas
referred to by the philosophical
concept of essence and an entire

range of psychological concepts from

awareness to motives to behavior.
Sikolohiyang Pilipino gathers data on
the Filipino Psyche by utilizing
culturally appropriate field methods in
the form of pagtatanong-tanong
(asking around), pakikiramdam
(shared inner perception),
panunuluyan (staying with), and
pakikipamuhay (living with), among
others.

The principal emphasis of Sikolohiyang

Pilipino are the following :
Identity and national consciousness
Social awareness and involvement
National and ethnic cultures and
languages, including the study of
Psychology
Bases and application of indigenous
psychology in health practices,
agriculture, art, mass media, religion,
etc.
Sikolohiyang Pilipino has three primary
areas of protest:

1. Sikolohiya ng pagbabagong-isip
(psychology of re-awakening), the
movement is against a psychology that
perpetuates colonial mentality and
promotes the decolonization of the
Filipino mind as a stage in the
development of national
consciousness.
2. Sikolohiyang malaya (liberated
psychology), it is against the
importation and imposition of a
psychology that has been developed
in, and is more appropriate to,
industrialized countries.
3. Sikolohiyang mapagpalaya
(liberating psychology), the movement
is against a psychology used for the
exploitation of the masses.

As part of the indigineous psychology

tradition, sikolohiyang Pilipino is built
on psychological knowledge that :
Arose from within the culture;
Reflects local behavior;
Can be interpreted within a local frame
of reference;
Yields results that are locally relevant.

Enriquez (1978) proposed that

Sikolohiyang Pilipino knowledge can be
borne out of two processes:
indigenization-from-without
This approach is based on the search
of local equivalents for the assumed
universal psychological concepts or the
contextualization of imported methods
and techniques, and tools and
instruments.
2. indigenization-from-within
This approach formalizes Filipinos
implicit psychological theories,
knowledge, methods and practices
developed with the local culture as
basis or source.
RETHINKING FILIPINO VALUES
Enriquez was critical of this approach
to the study of Filipino values. He
encouraged Filipino scholars to take a
second look at these values using a
Filipino orientation.
Bahala Na
Bostrom (1968) defines bahala na as
the Filipino attitude that makes him
accept sufferings and problems,
leaving everything to God.
Bahala na ang Diyos, is a fatalistic
resignation or withdrawal from
an engagement or crisis or a
shirking from personal
responsibility (Andres, 1992).
Sikolohiyang Pilipno perspective
interprets bahala na not as

fatalism but determination and risk

taking. They are telling themselves
that they are ready to face the difficult
situation before them (Lagmay, 1997).
Hiya
Sibley (1965) translated hiya as
shame.
Lynch (1961) saw hiya as
the uncomfortable feeling
that accompanies
awareness of being in a
socially unacceptable
position or performing a
socially unacceptable
action.
Andres (1994) described hiya as an
ingredient in why Flipinos overspend
during fiestas in order to please their
visitors, even to the extent of going
into debt.
Bonifacio (1976) alerted us to the
different meanings of the word hiya
depending on its form- nakakahiya
(embarrassing), napahiya (placed in an
awkward position), ikinahiya (be
embarassed with someone), etc.
With some affixes, it becomes
negative, e.g., napahiya; with others,
positive, e.g., mahiyain (shy).
Utang na Loob
Kaut (191) translated utang na loob as
debt of gratitude.
Andres (1994) defined it as the
principle of reciprocity incurred when
an individual helps another.
Hollnsteiner (1961) took this
interpretation further by claiming that
the recipient of the favor is forced: to
show his gratitude properly by
returning the favor with interest.
In the context of Filipino culture, it
actually means gratitude/solidarity.
It is not absolutely
obligatory in the immediate
future, for the opportunity

to show utang na loob might come

only in the next generation, maybe not
in your lifetime.
Pakikisama vs. pakikipagkapwa
Lynch (1961, 1973 identified
pakikisama as a Filipino
value, giving it the English
translation of maintaning:
smooth interpersonal
relations by gong along
with the group or the
majority decision.
Enriquez (1978) gives
meaning to
pakikipagkapwa as treating the other
person as kapwa or fellow human
being
TWO CATEGORIES OF KAPWA
Ibang-tao (outsider)
If one is regarded as ibangtao, interaction can range from
pakikitungo to pakiksalamuha to
pakikilahok to pakikibagay to
pakikisama
Hindi ibang tao
- If one is considered as hindi bang tao,
then you can consider
pakikipalagayang-loob, pakikisangkot
to pakikiisa.
INTERNALITY AND ETERNALITY
The word Honor both refers to puri
and dangal however:
Puri refers to honor which is physical
such as that bestowed through
applauses and compliments, thus
eternal.
Dangal is honor from within-knowledge
of ones true worth, character,
achievement and success.
