Part 1
1.Hypotonic environment. The cells would lyse (burst) because there is less
nonpermeating solutes in the extracellular fluid compared to the intracellular
fluid (water would flow into cells causing them to lyse).
2. Headache, vomiting, dizziness. The brain was probably the organ that was
affected the most.
3. more than likely what happened was that the blood cells exploded because
of the hypotonic environment they were in. Thus blood was not able to
complete what it is designed to do.
4. Blood test would be the best way to go. Getting a blood sample and
looking at it through a microscope would let me know if its Hypertonic,
Hypotonic or Isotonic. Once seeing what state they are in, a diagnosis would
take place.
5. Administer saline to them to or solution that has more nonpermeating
solutes than the intracellular fluid of the blood cells. This would cause water
to leave the cells in order to counter the hypotonic state Jennifer, Cassandra,
and James cells were in. (water would flow out of cells which is what we
want).
6. Administering too much pure water could lyse the blood cells all the water
would rush into the cells thus causing them to burst. A 0.9% NaCl (normal
saline) is what we call isotonic for our blood cells (normal levels). Very
important to maintain this balance!
Part 2 Facts about Hyponatremia
1. Their bodies release the hormone ADH thus causing their bodies to retain
water. With more water being retained the extracellular fluid is more likely to
be hypotonic compared to the intracellular fluid. Continuous storage of water
(decreased water expelled in urine) leads to hypotonic environments.
2. Desert dwellers are in danger of getting Hyponatremia because of the
environment where they live. The desert is a hot place and sweat contains
salts, so the body would need less amounts of water than usual to get
hyponatremia. The best way to avoid it would be to not abuse water. And
intake more salts and such.
3. it would be more likely for a baby to get hyponatremia because they have
a much lower concentration of sodium in their bodies when compared to an
adult.
4a. the brain cells would be the same concentration as the cerebral fluid
(300mM) making them isotonic.
b. the concentration of nonpermeable solutes would be lower than the
intracellular fluids thus there would be a higher water concentration. Then
creating a hypotonic soulution
