COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA

HOUSE OF DELEGATES
RICHMOND

November 13, 2015

The Honorable Terence R. McAuliffe

Patrick Henry Building, 3rd Floor
1111 East Broad Street
Richmond, Virginia 23219

Dear Governor McAuliffe,

We read with dismay recent news reports that convicted double-murderer Jens Soering has
renewed his request to be returned to his home country of Germany. On behalf of the communities we
represent in the Virginia House of Delegates and in the interest of preserving the integrity of Virginias
criminal system, we respectfully urge you to deny this request.
Mr. Soering murdered Derek and Nancy Haysom in Bedford County in 1985. He fled Virginia
with his accomplice and went on an international crime spree before finally being arrested in England.
He was extradited with great difficulty under an agreement that Virginia would not seek the death
penalty. Mr. Soering was convicted by a Virginia jury of the double homicide and given two life
sentences. His parole has been repeatedly denied.
Mr. Soerings murder of two innocent Virginians remains one of the most gruesome and gutwrenching crimes in the last 30 years. The Haysom family and people of Central Virginia have lived
with the lingering nightmare of this brutal murder. It would be a grave disservice to this community
and the entire Commonwealth for Mr. Soering to be released.
His release to Germany would also significantly undermine the integrity of Virginias criminal
justice system, and would demonstrate that the justice system provides benefits to the powerful and
well connected that are not available to minorities and the less fortunate. Under Virginias system of
truth in sentencing, life without parole should mean just that.
Mr. Soering killed two innocent Virginians. For the last 30 years, the families of Derek and
Nancy Haysom have lived without their loved ones. The people of Central Virginia have not been able
to erase the horror of this brutal murder from their community. Mr. Soering has not accepted
responsibility for his actions or demonstrated any sense of remorse.

On behalf of the citizens we represent, and in the interest of preserving the integrity of our
criminal justice system, we respectfully encourage you to promptly deny Mr. Soerings request.
Respectfully,
