Running Head: COMPREHENSION SCHOOL ASSESSMENT

Step 2:

Assess Your School

Assessment Results
Overall Grade: F
During School: 20%
Let's get to work. The school day is the critical time for implementing the Active &
Healthy Schools Program, which can benefit students, teachers and staff. Let's
look at some steps for improving your Active & Healthy score during the school
day.

Curriculum: 20%
Let's get to work. The Active & Healthy Schools Program is committed to creating
programs that schools can successfully implement and maintain. Let's look at
some possibilities for your PE program.

Recess / Lunch: 50%

Room for improvement. Help students get more out of your recess and lunch
programs by providing additional information and resources, or by rescheduling
recess time for after lunch.

After School: 20%

Let's get to work. Take a look at a few simple changes your school can make to
help create an Active & Healthy environment, both at school and at home.

What are at least two strengths and two weaknesses of your school?
Sunset Canyon Elementary School has many strengths. The two main strengths would
be the staff. Sunset Canyon works together as a community and their main goal is to help
provide a learning community to help students become the best they can be. Another
strength of Sunset Canyon Elementary School would be that it is a Core Knowledge
school and offers more then one way of teaching a subject. Core Knowledge focuses on
teaching science and social studies everyday as part of the curriculum.
One weakness of my school would be that we do not provide a curriculum that focuses
on an active and healthy lifestyle. Another weakness would be that recess is not provided
for the older age groups because of the busy daily schedule.

Describe each strength and weakness based on your observation/experience as well

as your results from the School Assessment Tool.

Based on my observation and experience the staff of Sunset Canyon Elementary
School is a strength because they all have one main goal in common, and that goal is to
make their students the best they can be. I have witnessed this during our professional
learning communities. Each and every teacher is always providing ideas and support to
help everyone succeed. Each grade group works together as a community to provide
resources and ideas to make Sunset Canyon the best school.
Since Sunset Canyone Elementary School is a Core Knowledge school it focuses on
providing subjects such as science and social studies which at times tend to be forgotten
in the daily schedule. I think this is wonderful because it provides students with more
knowledge other then just the basic math, language arts, and reading subjects. Through
Core Knowledge Sunset Canyon can incorporate science in a way that they can focus on
healthy life styles.
I believe that not focusing a curriculum on active and healthy lifestyles is a weakness
because students spend most of the week in the classroom. Since we know that students
are within our school environment most of their days it is a waste of time to not provide
them with a way to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle that can help mold their lifes into
healthy ones for their future. Providing The Healthy Lifestyle Program from the survey
above can be an easy way to implement this.
Although recess scored at the highest percentage in the above survey it is still needs
improvement. For me I believe this is the main weakness. Older age groups do not get the
chance to have a recess period. Since older age groups have more content to cover
teachers do not want to take 15-20 minutes away from their teaching day. Although the

students are older, they are still children and would benefit both mentally and physically
from a recess throughout their scheduled day.

What are at least two ways to improve the policies in place at your school? Explain
detailed information for each way and what you expect from each way.
From the survey we can see that during school received 20% because of this I would
choose to improve nutritional education at my school. I would focus on improving this by
providing more knowledge on the importance of active and health programs within the
school setting. I would include information through an assembly that provided healthy
eating, healthy meal planning, and healthy easy exersice. I would also encourage parents
to come and join so that they could gain an understanding of the importance. Through
this change I would expect children to make better choices and to begin to change their
lifestyle.
After School also received 20% in the survey so a way to improve After School activity
would be by sending weekly news letters to parents with resources and tips including
ways to improve a healthy lifestyle. I believe all parents want the best for their children
and want their children to live healthy lives but many times parents are too busy trying to
provide for their family that simple things can be forgotten. I would focus on finding easy
resources like movies, or videos parents could watch to educated themselves on nutrition.
What are at least two ways that you can you use this information to engage
administration, teachers, parents, students and the community in promoting
more healthful behaviors? Include a specific description for how to use the
results from the School Assessment Tool as well as your ideas for improvement.
Two ways that the information provided in the survey can be used to engage

administration, teachers, parents, students, and the community in promoting more

healthful behaviors would as easy as emailing the survey out to the staff and having them
see the results. By providing the staff with the survey they would be able to see where
Sunset Canyon needs help in improving healthful behavior. I think this would be
important because to be honest I had no idea how many areas Sunset Canyon needed to
improve and I can guarantee that many staff members have no knowledge on this topic as
well. Once the staff has a look at the results then together in a staff meeting we can
brainstorm ways to improve our school environment.
Another way to engage teachers and parents would be by providing statistics of the
rapid obesity rates within Arizona. Showing charts or graphs will provide teachers and
parents with a visual to understand where we need to improve our healthful behaviors.
We could use the during school part of the survey to have children conduct research on
obesity rates as well as research ways to improve a healthy lifestyle and then have them
present the research found to the class. As a teacher I could make copies of the
information and have the students discuss their findings with their parents.

How can the information obtained be used to support your potential topic for the
Signature Assignment?
The information obtained from this survey can be used to support my potential

topic for the Signature Assignment by giving me an insight on areas that my school needs
to focus on. As provided in the information above, I discussed main areas that need
improvement. For my Signature Assignment I would focus on one of these specific areas.
I think I would like to incorporate a change in the during school portion of the survey. I
would like to put together an assembly that provides students, staff, and parents important

information on how to begin a healthy lifestyle change. It would be really great to be able
to have guest speakers come in to discuss the importance of making such a change in
ones life.
Step 3:
The name of the Public school I am at is a Title 1 school called Sunset Canyon
Elementary School in the Paradise Valley Unified District. Sunset Canyon Elementary
School accepts K-6 grade students, and provides Open-Enrollment options for students
who do not live in the district boundaries.
Sunset Canyon Elementary School provides healthy meals through the PV
Schools Nutrition & Wellness Department. For the year of 2014 Sunset Canyon provided
free or reduced lunch for 22.8% of its total students.
Sunset Canyon Elementary School has a variety of students. For the year of 2014
it was made up of 55.1% White students, 35.8% Hispanic students, 2.6% Asian students,
2.3% African American students, 1% American Indian students, and lastly 3.2% students
with two or more races. When searching the total proportion of ELLs in Sunset Canyon
on the websites provided as well as the PV schools net I was not able to come across the
information.
The average class size for classrooms at Sunset Canyon Elementary School are 26
students. Sunset Canyon provides preschool, a full day kindergarten class, and grades 16. Sunset Canyon Elementary School is located near a rural but mostly urban area. The
ethnic makeup as stated above is mostly White and Hispanic. Although I could not locate
the School Letter Grade on the websites provided or school website I was able to find that
Sunset Canyon Elementary School is ranked 389 out of 1051 schools according to

schooldigger.com. Overall I think Sunset Canyon Elementary School is a great school
with many avaliable resources.
