Impressionsm
Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of
Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to
prominence during the 1870s and 1880s

Impressionist painting characteristics include relatively small, thin, yet visible


brush strokes

The Impressionists faced harsh opposition from the conventional art


community in France. The name of the style derives from the title of a
Claude Monet work

Vincent Van Gogh


Vincent van Gogh 30 March 1853 29 July 1890. He was a post
impressionist Dutch painter.

His output includes portraits, self portraits, landscapes and still lifes.
In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks,
including 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors,
drawings, sketches and prints

Early Life
Van Gogh was born to upper middle class parents and spent his early

adulthood working for a firm of art dealers


He traveled between The Hague, London and Paris, after which he
taught in England at Isleworth and Ramsgate. He was deeply religious
as a younger man and aspired to be a pastor
In 1885 he painted The Potato Eaters
In 1886, he went to Paris to join his brother Tho, , inevitably met
Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin. Having met the new Impressionist
painters, he tried to imitate their techniques; he began to lighten his
very dark palette and to paint in the short brushstrokes of the
Impressionists style. Unable to successfully copy the style, he
developed his own more bold and unconventional style.

Van Gogh ended up cutting up his part of his ear after this incident he
shown fits of madness and was sent to an asylum

He was not actually successful in his career he only sold one painting
in his life, but his works are worth millions

He paintings include Starry Night, The Olive Trees and The


Sunflowers
