DYNAMIC PHYSICAL EDUCATION SECONDARY LESSON PLAN

Lesson Plan 1

OBJECTIVES:

The student will participate in different fitness activities that will help with:
To be able to lead other students in simple locomotor movements.
To be able to perform animal walks.
To learn a variety of jumping skills.

EQUIPMENT: 10 cones, 6 circuit training signs, 1 ball per partner, music, and whistle.

Instructional Activities

Teaching Hints

Introductory Activity (2-3 minutes)

New Leader Warm-Up
Place students in small groups (3-4). Groups
move single file around the area, following a
leader in the group. On signal, the last
person moves to the head of the squad and
becomes the leader. Various types of
locomotor movements and exercises can be
used by leader to offer variety and
challenge.

If students have trouble working small groups,

teach the concept of leading and following by
working with a partner.
Encourage a variety of responses.

Fitness Development Activity (8-12 minutes)

Circuit Training
Place signs with movement tasks on cones
and place around teaching area. Create six
groups no more than five students in each
group. Each group will go to a circuit
station and perform the task on the sign:
1. Run and Jump
2. Curl-ups and High knees
3. Bear Walk
4. Kangaroo Jumps
5. High Five Squat Jumps
6. Twist with a ball

Tape alternating segments of silence and music

to signal duration of exercise.
Music segments (30 seconds) indicate duration
of exercise while intervals of silence (10
seconds) indicate it is time for students to
move to next area.
Praise those students who hustle to the next
station.

Lesson Focus (15-20 minutes)

Partner Manipulative Activities Using Balls

1. Rolling a ball back and forth to a partner.

a. Practice different deliveries, i.e., twohanded, right and left.
b. Roll at targets such as bowling pins or
through the legs of partner.
2. Dribbling and Passing Skills.
a. One player guards and the other dribbles.
Change on signal. Practice with both
hands.
b. Practice passing back and forth to a
partner. Use the chest pass.
c. Pass back and forth using bounce passes.
d. Combine passing and dribbling. Dribble
the ball 3 times and pass to partner.
3. Rolling and Passing from different positions.
a. Try rolling and passing skills from different
positions, i.e., kneeling, sitting.
4. Passing and Moving.
a. One child remains in place and passes to
the other child, who is moving. The moving
child can trace different patterns, such as
back and forth between two spots or in a
circle around the stationary child.
b. Practice different kinds of throws and
passes as both children move in different
patterns.
c. Practice foot skills of dribbling and
passing.
d. Partners hold the ball between their bodies
without using the hands or arms.
Experiment with different ways to move
together.
e. Carrying a ball, run in different directions
while the partner follows. On signal, toss
the ball upward so that the child following
can catch it. Now change places and repeat
the activity.
5. Allow time for students to explore and create.

Encourage proper skill performance

by using instructional cues such as:
Keep your eyes on the ball
Catch the ball with the fingertips.
Use opposition when passing the
ball.
When catching, soft receipt of the
ball is achieved by giving with the
hands and arms. The hands should
reach out somewhat to receive the
ball and then cushion the impact by
bringing the ball toward the body.
To catch a throw above the waist, the
hands should be positioned so that
the thumbs are together. To receive a
throw below the waist, the little
fingers should be kept toward each
other and the thumbs kept out.
When throwing to a partner, unless
otherwise specified, the throw
should reach the partner at about the
chest height. At times, different
target points should be specifiedhigh, low, right, left, etc.

Game (5 minutes)
Sneak Attack
Two parallel lines are drawn about 60 ft apart. The class is divided into two teams. One
team takes a position on one of the lines, with their backs to the area. These are the chasers.
The other team is on the other line, facing the area. This is the sneak team. The sneak team
moves forward on signal, moving toward the chasers. When they get reasonably close, a
signal is given, and the sneak team turns and runs back to their line, chased by the other
team. Anyone tagged before reaching the line changes to the chase team. The game is then
repeated, with the roles exchanged.

Evaluation/ Review
During the circuit training the whole body is being used for the movements. Most of the focus
would be on the waist, legs, feet, hands, and arms since most of the activities have to do with
running and jumping.
