Student: Megan Butterworth

Course: Edu 521

Grade: 8 Topic: Systems of Equations

Professor: Maria Esposito

Date: June 20, 2016
Content Area: Pre-Algebra

Instructional Objectives
Following a lesson on solving systems of equations using elimination, students will solve 4 word
problems, solving for two variables with no more than one wrong system.
Common Core State Standards and Indicators
Mathematics: Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations. 8.EE.C.8b
Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by
graphing the equations.
Indicator
This will be evident when students choose one of the three methods (elimination,
substitution, or graphing) to solve real life examples of a system of equations.
Communication and Collaboration NETS.S.2
Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media
and formats
Indicator
This will be evident when students work in small groups to solve real world examples.
They will discuss how to set up two-variable equations and the best method to solve word
problems.

Materials

SMART board
Textbook
Calculators

Strategies
Direct Instruction: This will be evident when I demonstrate an example of how to write two
different equations given a word problem. I will show students how to use either elimination or
substitution to solve for two variables.
Cooperative Learning: Students complete 4 additional examples of word problems. They will
work in pairs using elimination and/or substitution, and check their work with surrounding
groups.

.
Adaptations
Speech/Language Impaired: These students will receive a copy of the notes and will work one on
one with the teacher. He/she will be given clear and concise directions throughout the lesson.
Motivation
Students will watch an instructional YouTube video on how to solve systems of linear equations.
We will briefly discuss the key points of the video, and students will brainstorm times in their
lives where they would need to solve for more than one variable (ex: the price of popcorn and
soda at a movie theater).
Developmental Procedures
Students will begin class by watching a YouTube video on how to solve a system of linear
equations. (What vocabulary did you recognize from the video? Which is your preferred method
of solving?)
Students will be given one word problem. I will instruct them on how to write two equations
with two variables. (How do we write a let statement based on the information in the problem?
What is the first equation that we could write using these two variables that you have chosen?)
Students will be shown how to solve one example using the previously learned elimination, and
substitution method. (Which method makes more sense for this problem? Are you answers
consistent with both methods?)
Students will then be required to plug in their answer into one of the original equations in order
to solve for the second variable. (If you already know how many 2 point questions are on the
exam, how do we solve for the number of 7 point questions? What happens if we already know
the value of t, and how to we plug it back into the equation?)
Students will conclude this example by checking. They will substitute each variable into both
equations to make sure it checks. (What should your equations look like if you have the correct
solution to the systems? What will happen if one or more of your answers is incorrect?)

Differentiation of Instruction
All students will be required to complete 4 real world examples of systems of equations. They
will choose one algebraic method, and work in pairs following a teacher demonstration.
Students who are below grade level will receive guided notes packet, showing them how to set
up two variable equations. They will work in groups of three and answer all additional
examples.

Students who are above grade level will choose their preferred method to solve the 4 given word
problems. They will then create their own word problem working backwards (starting with the
solution and creating two equations). These students will trade their original word problem with
their partner and solve each others example.
Assessment
Students will work in groups to complete a ditto with 4 different word problems. They will set
up two equations for each example and solve linear equations in two variables. I will collect one
random question from each group and check for understanding.
Independent Practice
Students will finish classwork and an addition 4 homework questions. They will be required to
write a let statement and define each variable. They will then write two equations and solve for
two variables.
Follow Up: Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment
Direct Teacher Intervention: The student(s) will work, under direct supervision of the teacher, on
the first group example. They will write out each step in their notebooks, and verbally explain
each step as they solve algebraically.
Academic Enrichment: The student will solve an extra, student written word problem. They will
use all three methods (elimination, substitution, and graphing) to solve this original word
problem. They will then check their solution with their partner/group members.

Initial Example: An exam worth 245 points contains 45 questions. Some

questions are worth 2 points and other questions are worth 7 points. How
many 2 point questions are on the test, and how many 7 point questions are on
the test?

Solving Systems of Equations: Word Problems

Solve each system by writing two equations.

1. The state fair is a popular field trip destination. This year the
senior class at High School A and the senior class at High
School B both planned trips there. The senior class at High
School A rented and filled 8 vans and 8 buses with 240
students. High School B rented and filled 4 vans and 1 bus with
54 students. Every van had the same number of students in it
as did the buses. Find the number of students in each van and
in each bus.
2. The senior classes at High School A and High School B planned
separate trips to New York City. The senior class at High School
A rented and filled 1 van and 6 buses with 372 students. High
School B rented and filled 4 vans and 12 buses with 780
students. Each van and each bus carried the same number of
students. How many students can a van carry? How many
students can a bus carry?
3. Brenda's school is selling tickets to a spring musical. On the
first day of ticket sales the school sold 3 senior citizen tickets
and 9 child tickets for a total of $75. The school took in $67 on
the second day by selling 8 senior citizen tickets and 5 child
tickets. What is the price each of one senior citizen ticket and
one child ticket?
4. Matt and Ming are selling fruit for a school fundraiser.

Customers can buy small boxes of oranges and large boxes of

oranges. Matt sold 3 small boxes of oranges and 14 large boxes

of oranges for a total of $203. Ming sold 11 small boxes of
oranges and 11 large boxes of oranges for a total of $220. Find
the cost each of one small box of oranges and one large box of
oranges.
