Dubstep is a London influenced hybrid of U.K.

garage that absorbed and incorporated elements of drum'n'bass, techno, and dub . Like most forms of underground dance music, dubstep was a single-oriented music genre, distributed from labels like Tempa, Tectonic, Hessle Audio, Immerse, and Kode9's Hyperdub. There are many similarities between dubstep and garage. For example, in both dubstep and garage the rhythm of the music is propelled by a heavy bass line. Dubstep can usually be identified by a tempo of 140 beats per minute. Typically, it will have what is known as a 2-step rhythm. Syncopation is also frequently used, as are snare drums. More recently, there have been developments into half -time rhythms. The earliest ventures into dubstep took place i n London, England, in 1999. During the development of the genre, the music was far more laid back and integrated break beat, drum and bass, and 2-step garage. The result of which was a much darker sound than the contemporary examples of dubstep. Forward >> was vital to the creation of dubstep. It was the first venue dedicated to playing, and producing, dubstep music. The club was first set up in Londons Soho and ran every Sunday night. Forward >> was also responsible for setting up a pirate radio station, Rinse FM, which was based in London. Rinse FM facilitated an increase in dubsteps audience and helped to create a fan -base outside London to encourage the genre to become mainstream. The target audience of the dubstep genre are young adults aged 17 -26. This is because dubstep music is generally played in clubs and parties young people are interested in and the genre is widely associated with youth rebellion against authorities. The United Kingdom is the main target country for dubstep, although most of the singles are produced in Britain and it is mo st popular throughout London.
