Reservoir High School Art Department Vivica Williams, Instructor http://rhsart.weebly.com/ Course Syllabus
Course Description: This course is designed for students who have demonstrated an ability to complete challenging work successfully at a demanding pace. Individuals will work to solve problems that focus on the depiction of light and ways to approach design in two and three dimensions. Students will be expected to gain skills in creative problem solving, independent research, problem finding and commitment to practice. Fundamental Experiences: Observational drawing and painting is the emphasis in Art II. Students are expected to become proficient in: 1. The use of contour and gesture to depict shape and position. 2. The accurate portrayal of proportions of forms in space. 3. The description of form and space through the use of light and shadow. 4. The use of color both realistically and expressively. 5. The ways to articulate responses (oral and written) to their own work and to the works of classmates and master artist exemplars. Materials: *You are not required to buy anything for Art II. All materials will be provided. Students with a strong interest in art are recommended to purchase:

A hard sketchbook (hard cover book or spiral bound.) 8.5x11 or 9x12 DO NOT get tablet bound pads (taped binding) You may use your sketchbook from Art I An art portfolio. Try to find one at least 30 wide (36 is ideal). Students who choose not to purchase one may make their own in class out of cardboard. Materials can be found at local arts or office supply stores such as Michaels, Office Depot, Staples, JoAnns, Laurel Arts etc. *Links to supply stores and other suggestions for the serious artist can be found on the Art Department Web Site http://mrenglishartroom.com/RHS/RHS_Art_Dept

Attendance & Lateness:

All students are expected to observe and adhere to all policies defined in the Student Handbook regarding lateness, attendance and conduct. Lateness will not be tolerated. As a studio class, attendance and promptness are critical to the success of the student in Art II. Multiple tardies will result in detention and affect the students grade. Attendance will be taken daily. Portfolio, Assessment, and Grading: Each student will compile a portfolio that consists of work done in class and at home, sketchbook/journal, reflections and exams. Portfolio reviews will be scheduled between the instructor and the student periodically throughout the semester. Students will also create digital online portfolios. A students grade will be based upon daily in-class work, homework, reflections, and assignments. Assignments will be evaluated based upon the following components: 1. Objectives - Meeting the criteria or objectives for the specific assignment. Ex. An assignment may include specific preparation/brainstorming. 2. Studio Skills Proper handling of equipment, responsible use of time, respect for others and their work, clean-up, and class participation. 3. Craftsmanship / Presentation Neatness and respect for your work should be evident in the appearance of a completed assignment. 4. Design Thoughtfulness to the composition and its relationship to personal ideas. This system will allow the teacher and the student to evaluate specific strengths and identify areas that need improvement. Grades will be based upon percentages: A=89.5-100% B=79.5-89.4% C=69.5-79.4% D=59.5-69.4% Classwork & Homework: Grading is done by using a point system. This will enable students to quickly compute their overall grades by adding the points that they have earned in class divided by the points possible. About 60% of the points will be considered classwork and 40% of the points will be considered homework. It is in the students best interest to use their regular class time wisely to complete assignments. If in-class time is not used wisely, more out-of-class work may be the result. Homework will be a combination of journal assignments, some preparation and brainstorming in your sketchbook, and final drawings. It is the students responsibility to record homework assignments. Two sustained homework assignments and visual journal pages will be given each marking period. The homework will relate to what we are doing in class. Plan on approximately 4-5 hours per sustained homework assignment. These will have specified class critique and due dates. Plan on an average of two to three hours of homework per week. Students taking the course for GT credit will be expected to work larger and with more complex problems and maintain a digital portfolio. Deadlines and Missed Work: Assignment deadlines are set at the discretion of the instructor when the assignment is given. It is the students responsibility to make up any missed work due to excused

absences, and to collect daily objectives, handouts, and notes. Students are also responsible for scheduling appointments with the teacher to discuss make-up work. If the student is absent on the day an assignment is due, the assignment should be handed in on the following day. *Unexcused late work will lose 10% off the grade for each day late. After 5 days, late work is no longer accepted. Studio Expectations: 1.) All tools and materials must be handled with care, respect, and safely. 2.) No electronic devices are allowed (Cell phones, iPods, etc.) 3.) Care for and clean up in the studio as if it were your own. 4.) No food or drink except bottled water. 5.) For some people, conversation helps them to make art; for others, quiet, focused thought is best. In this class, talking quietly while you work is okay as long as your conversation is not adversely affecting your work, or the work of those around you. I will be the judge of how much talking is too much talking. 6.) Respect that everyone has their own talent/ability level in art. Be respectful to others work, ideas and feedback. Letters of Recommendation If you have consistently earned As and Bs in my classes, I am most happy to write you a letter of recommendation, provided you have followed the protocol outlined by the student services office.
