Teddlywinks (Bear in a Boat Applique)

Applique Instructions With a pencil, carefully trace each shape onto the paper side of some vliesofix, taking note that the dotted lines are where one shape slips under another. Do not cut along the dotted lines. Cut out shapes, approximately outside the traced lines. With the paper side up, iron the shapes to the back of your chosen fabrics. Cut out shapes along the lines and peel off the paper. Place an appliqu mat or baking paper over the drawing of the bear in the boat, and position the shapes on this, taking care where one piece overlaps another. One of the pieces requires snipping, where the teddys arm hangs over the side of the boat. This is marked on the pattern. When you are happy with the arrangement, iron in place using a dry setting. When cool, peel off the mat, position on your background fabric and iron in place. (I sometimes leave choosing my background until this step as the appliqu can be rehearsed on different fabrics.) Using two strands of embroidery thread: Blanket-stitch around each shape. Use back stitch for facial features. (These details can be drawn in with a water erasable pen, and washed out with cold water at completion of embroidery.) The nose can either be blanket-stitched in place, or you can cover it with satin-stitch. Find an anchor button for the bow of the boat. You can now use your teddy to make a beach bag or tote, quilt, framed picture, wall hanging, cushion, etc!
