Questions 29 34 are based on the following passage. If you visit Chiang Mai, make a point to visit the marketplace, for that is where you can get North Thailands exotic delicacies and the most exotic are bugs! Yes. Bugs! Deep-fried, salted and ready to be served just like how French fries are eaten in Malaysia. There are various kinds of bugs. They have bamboo worms, which are the more popular among the bugs, crickets, grasshoppers, mole crickets, butterfly larvae and several unrecognisable insects. According to the Thais, these bugs are rich in protein. They are not widely sold but if one looks hard enough, one can find them at certain corners of the market. The bamboo worm is more popular because it is widely sold and neatly packed in air-tight plastic containers, presumably for tourists to take home as souvenirs. Some locals prefer the bamboo worm raw but it is quite tasteless. The fried stuff is a different story altogether. If you are not looking at what you are putting into your mouth, you would not be able to guess you are eating a bug. But if you look at it and put it in your mouth, you would be conscious of the feelers tickling the roof of your mouth and this may make you want to throw up. The Thais vouch that it is a nutritious food rich in protein although not commonly eaten like chicken in this predominantly Buddhist nation. The other bugs, apart from bamboo worms, are sold loosely, costing about RM2 or 20 bahts for five grammes. The bugs are caught from the rice fields where they thrive in abundance. The rice fields are mostly found on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. The farmers hunt for these bugs during the non-harvesting season to earn extra cash. 29. The word exotic tells us that the delicacies are A cheap and bland B raw and terrible C unusual and exciting D rare and expensive 30. According to the Thais, the bugs are rich in A protein B calcium C vitamins D minerals 31. A tourist will be able to take home the cooked bugs because they are packed in A paper bags B plastic bags C aluminum foil D air-tight plastic containers 32. Which part of the mouth would be tickled by the feelers of the bugs? A Lips C Tongue B Teeth D Roof of the mouth

SECTION B : SUMMARY [10 marks] [Time suggested: 30 minutes] Read the article below and complete the following task. All living things depend on water for their survival. A clean supply of water is essential for people, not only to drink but for sanitary and health reasons. Water is supplied into most homes by underground pipes. It starts its journey in a lake or a man-made reservoir and passes through a process of purification before coming out of the tap in your home. Harmful bacteria that may cause serious diseases and death need to be removed from water before it can be used for domestic purposes. Dirt particles are removed because they can wear away pipes or industrial equipment. Many people in developing countries do not get access to clean drinking water and sanitation. In the countryside, people may be forced to use the same ponds, streams, rivers and lakes for drinking and for sewage. In cities, water supply and sewage systems are often inadequate and, in both cases, people may be exposed to serious illnesses such as malaria, cholera and yellow fever. In parts of the world that receive little rainfall, access to water can be difficult. In such areas, wells may be dug underground, or water can be piped from natural springs. Some countries even process sea water at a desalination plant. The sea water is heated, and only pure water evaporates. When it condenses, it is collected, leaving behind the salt in a concentrated form. Write a summary on the importance of water and how man gets water supply. Your summary must: not be more than 60 words, including the 10 words given below be in continuous writing (not in note form) be written in one paragraph Use you own words as far as possible without changing its original meaning. It was only a nightmare! Section B All living things need a clean water supply free of harmful bacteria for drinking because of sanitary and health reasons. Underground pipes send purified water from reservoirs to homes. Sometimes, people use pond, lake and river water for both drinking and sewage. Unclean water causes illnesses. People drink well and spring water or processed sea water in dry areas. (59 words) Section C The drama, Rumpelstiltskin, is a simple family drama. Lisas parents are proud of their daughters skills and they boast about Lisa. They go overboard and tell the King that Lisa can turn straw into gold. The drama becomes exciting and ends on a happy note. I would recommend this drama to my friends because of the moral values in this simple story. It tells of parents who take pride in their childs skills. They realise their mistake they have made and make attempts to save Lisas life and her firstborn. This indicates their sense of responsibility. The King shows greed, but he honours his word and marries Lisa. The drama may be simple but there are many moral lessons to be learned from it.

Paper 2 Section A A Nightmare I heard a piercing scream. Although I was afraid, I forced myself to move. Looking through a dirty, unwashed window, I saw a girl, about five years old, standing between two burly men. She was looking at the two men and sobbing. One of the men took a step towards her and she cringed with fear and let out another scream. I screamed in unison as I stumbled and accidentally knocked over a flowerpot. I fell and the next thing I knew, I was being pushed into the room with the girl. A stocky man with muscular arms shouted at me, Who are you? What are you doing here? He approached me menacingly. The other man was holding the girl with a dirty hand over her mouth. I backed away but he caught me up in his bear-like grip. I kicked and lashed out blindly. The girl started sobbing and I realised I had to rescue her.
