FOOD CHECKING OUT THE GROUND ROUND By Whitney Delaney, Contributing Writer

With the large variety of restaurants in Greater Grand Forks, how does one decide where to eat? Well, when a restaurant has great specials every day, a friendly atmosphere, great service, and even greater food, its easy to choose. I recently dined at the Ground Round on 32nd Avenue, and I had a wonderful experience. Going out to eat doesnt have to be saved for special occasions or weekends because the Ground Rounds weeknight specials are almost too good to be true. Monday night, pitchers of Miller Light and Bud Light are $6 and there are all-you-can-eat wings and tater tots for $7.99. Whether watching a football game, or just coping with a case of the Mondays, this combination is hard to beat. Tuesday nights feature two-for-one burgers and half-price bottles of wine. On Wednesdays you can get $3.25 margaritas which go well with Ground Rounds great Tex-Mex options like Baja Fish Tacos or Fajitas. On Thursday you can choose from 21 flavors of Long Island Iced Teas for only $1.95. Monday-Friday, in the bar, there is a free appetizer bar, and happy hour is from 3-6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close. Happy hour features appetizers all under $5.99 and $2.99 Long Island Teas and margaritas. The weekend specials are just as good as the weeknights. From 4close on Fridays, there is all you can eat Nibblin Ribs and half-price wine. From11 a.m.-8 p.m. Ground Round has a build-your-own Bloody Mary and Bloody Caesar bar to enjoy while watching college football on ESPN. The weekend is rounded off with a free chili bar

from 2-5 p.m., $4.99 burgers with fries or onion rings, and happy hour all day. Although the specials are killer, dont forget about the rest of Ground Rounds extensive menu. There are also burgers, sandwiches, salads, Mexican, seafood, pasta, steak, smoothies, and a lot of fun cocktails. And thats not it! There is something for whatever mood youre in. When I was there last, I ordered the Cajun Chicken Penne Florentine. The pasta was done to a perfect al dente, which is sometimes overlooked in restaurants. The chicken was seasoned well with just enough spice. My friend Barb ordered the Orange Grilled Salmon with mashed red skin potatoes, and when I asked her how her meal was she described it in one word: Amazing. The atmosphere to enjoy your meal is as pleasant as the food. The dining layout is ideal for conversation. The booths allow for a little privacy, but are still positioned around flat screen TVs and let you share the game with other sports fans. The American themed decorations make the perfect back drop to enjoy friends and sports or just enjoy a night out. You can check out the full menu online, and if you dont have a lot of time to go out to eat, no worries. You can also order online so your food is ready when you are. New to Ground Round this month will be delivery, so you can enjoy Ground Round at home, work, or anywhere really.

EVENTS BATMAN LIVE! WORLD TOUR: AN INTERVIEW By Mike Peterson, Publisher

I was able to interview NICK GRACE, Executive Producer for the biggest live-action show you could ever see, BATMAN LIVE. Recently, they held performances at Xcel Energy in downtown St. Paul. They are still touring North America, and they will be in Sioux City Iowa November 16th-18th. I highly reccomend booking a trip. A5) What Batman sources are the main influence that goes into "Batman Live?" NICK) All our creative inspiration has been taken from Jim Lee's work, in particular the graphic novel Hush. I would say this was certainly our main influence from a creative perspective. A5) How does "Batman Live" rival the experience of people going to the theaters, and do you think this show will encourage people to pay more attention to plays, etc.? NICK) For the first time in the history of DC Comics, Batman can be seen on stage in a unique, action packed area show with a brand new original story. It it a very immersive experience, where the audience will feel they are in Gotham City when they set foot into the Arena floor. We hope it will inspire people to go and see other live plays and shows. A5) Amist the rock-and-roll, expensive and live set, how much consideration does the storyline and musical score have in the development of this act? NICK) The first creative person who was engaged were the writers, for us a good storyline was the core and heart of the show. We wanted a show were people could engage in a good story and invest in the characters. A5) Is the Batmobile inanimate on such a small stage? NICK) We were fortunate enough to have legendary F1 car designer Professor Gordon Murray design the Batmobile exclusively for Batman Live. The Batmobile features a couple of times in the show and is a character in itself! It makes a spectacular entrance, speeding down the 100ft stage much to the delight of an applauding audience.

A5) What has been the most difficult things about putting this all together? And the most enjoyable? NICK) The Batman universe is so diverse, it was most difficult deciding upon the characters featured and the storyline because there are so many opportunities. I have been a Batman fan since the age of 5, so the most enjoyable bit was actually being part of this universe as the Producer of this live show. A5) I grew up with Batman in the 80s and 90s, as did so many others. I often wondered if 20 and 30 year olds are the loudest screamers at your show versus the little kids. Any comments on the diversity of fans "Batman Live" brings to the table? NICK) I grew up with Batman in the 60s, as I'm sure did many of the parents who bring along their children to Batman Live. Its goes to show that Batman does appeal to all generations, everyones grown up with Batman in their life at some point. A5) How long does set-up take and how many people actually work the set? NICK) We tour with 46 crew and the production travels in 20 53-foot semi-trailer trucks. It is designed in the Rock n Roll manner to load into Arenas quickly. It takes two days to build the production in each Arena and only 5 hours to load out. A5) I also heard that many of you who work on "Batman Live" also did the sets for the Olympics. How was that experience? NICK) We were fortunate enough to have a world class creative team on Batman Live, Es Devlin our Production Designer designed the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics and Patrick Woodroffe, our Lighting Designer lit both the opening and closing ceremonies. Speaking to both Es and Patrick it was obviously a once in lifetime experience. Check out the Batman Live website at www.BatmanLive.com For more exciting events at the Xcel Energy Center, go to www.XcelEnergyCenter.com.

COVER UNIQUE COFFEE SHOP AND MUSIC VENUE TO OPEN DOWNTOWN

By Suzanne Irwin, Contributing Writer

Unique coffee shop and music venue will soon open up downtown By: Suzanne Irwin | Contributing writer Some things were meant to be together. Salt and pepper. Cream and sugar. Music and coffee. One other distinctive pair combines their love for each other and their passion for coffee and melodies in the newest music venue in downtown Grand Forks. Josh and Mary Hoeckle are working to bring an all ages venue to the heart of downtown in a one-of-a-kind place called The Ember. The location downtown is currently operating as a part-time, nonprofit coffee shop sponsored by Freedom Church and plans to open its doors full-time later this fall. The husband and wife duo are tackling the project of coordinating renovations, training in staff and booking musical performances at this exclusive site. However, plans for this venue started percolating many years ago. The Ember has been a dream of ours since before we got married, Mary explains. My dream was to open a coffee shop, because I love the idea that a coffee shops are for conversations, relationships and good coffee, she laughs, Josh talked about running a music venue now thats what The Ember is becoming, she explains. The Hoeckles say this new place has a special fit in the Grand Forks community. The Ember isnt just another coffee shop that has musicians come and play. It is a place that creates and fosters community and relationships. Hundreds of students and community members have already attended free concerts and coffee nights. Musicians aged 16 to 60 can embrace

their dreams to play. Their friends can come support them in a drug and alcohol free venue. College students and young adults have a fun place to meet downtown that isnt just another restaurant or bar, explains Mary. The venue has opened its doors to crowds of more than 100 on Friday nights. Currently the place has hosted bands from across the nation including, Spoken (Tooth&Nail Records), The Suit (2010 Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands winners), David Curtis from Run Kid Run (Tooth&Nail Records) and many other regional musicians. The couple is now taking the music venue to the next level. The Ember will be open all week and late at night. The Hoeckles explain that this unique get-away will offer high quality, specialty craft coffee, top-notch concerts, the arts and community events. They say The Ember will use its location down town to engage the eardrums but also connect with patrons in meaningful relationships. We are so excited for this journey and look forward to seeing you around The Ember sometime soon, adds Mary. This pair is working their way to provide a perfect place for others to grow, connect and pursue their dreams too. The Ember is a non-profit, volunteer run coffee shop and music venue where all proceeds go back to serving the community. This couple has priced the labor and equipment expenses for this project at $40,000. It is very easy to partner with The Ember to see this dream become a reality. For more information and opportunities to invest in this project, visit www.freedomchurchgf.com/the-ember, says Mary Hoeckle.

YOUR VOICE THE RAVES AND RANTS PAGE By You! READ A BOOK (BUT READ THIS FIRST)
By Taylor Adam Brost, Contributing Writer
As you read this, you more than likely have no idea what its author looks like. You dont know my height, weight, and you dont know skin or hair color. You dont know what my voice sounds like and you dont know that when I laugh uncontrollably, I sound like a little girl. Well now you do. But my point is, your imagination is probably painting a picture that only you have in your head. And each one of you reading this is creating a different image. Hopefully I look like a stud up there, but regardless, I want you to think about the last time you let your imagination run wild. this novelist. Start with Welcome to the Monkey House. With a style of writing unlike any Ive ever witnessed, Mr. Vonnegut has installed elements similar to the original Twilight Zone series into a plethora of short stories that I promise will keep you thinking for days after you finish it. Forget what your elementary school teachers told you, and take an afternoon to let your mind wander. You wont regret it. And if you dono really you wont. Just do it. Now. Go, dog. Go! They also want to cut the salary cap by about 20 million dollars, dropping the 70.5 million dollar salary cap to 50.8 million, taking away 24% of the players salary. Since the NHLPA and the owners could not reach an agreement, the owners have locked the players out for the 2012-13 season. With the lockout in effect since September 15 and fans left without hockey, I think its time that the owners and players come to a compromise and both make concessions to get the game back on the ice. the sports revenue, owners want to cut it down to 47% with the owners taking in 53%.

NHL LOCKOUT: A DOWNER FOR EVERBODY

By Courtney Hrkac, Contributing Writer
With the highly anticipated 2012-13 NHL season projected to one of the most exciting seasons to date, fans are forced to sit out with the rest of the leagues professional athletes. The NHLs attendance has been on the incline for the past 5 years, gaining popularity nationwide and finally finding its place among other major sports.

Kurt Vonnegut is a genius. I can say this because it is a fact. Ok, maybe it is my opinion. But I urge you to pick up a book written by

We all remember back when our parent or guardian would sit right next to the bed, plug in that TV, and watch with us as we fought to keep our eyes open late at night, right? No. What a lot of us remember is hearing our favorite nighttime story, fighting to stay awake as our most cherished tale is told. For me it was Goodnight Moon or Go, Dog. Go! But the point is, everyone has been read to at some point in time. So why not read for yourself, now?

If we see a full season lockout now, we can expect a longer and harder climb for the NHL to obtain the popularity it has now.

The fans want to watch hockey, and without the players, the NHL franchise owners dont have a product. People love the game of hockey and they want to see it grow more and more, and the longer this lockout is in effect the more it will hurt the league that steadily gained fans nationwide.

Although the NHL has been on the rise, some of the NHL franchises are facing financial hardships. One year ago, we saw the Atlanta Thrashers move their franchise to the Winnipeg Jets, and most recently we have been hearing news of the possible relocation of the Phoenix Coyotes and the Edmonton Oilers. With players currently getting 57% of

EXCLUSIVE COMMUNITY FEATURE PRESENTED BY

Hey Guys! I wanted to tell you about a great Grand Forks experience this past week and thought it would help others find great things to do in this great city! I recently went to a pizza party at a YP friends apartment. I know what you are thinking, a pizza party, how original. But this was more than just getting together and eating pizza. Lucas Rengstorf and Amanda Smith decided it would be a good idea to test our knowledge of Grand Forks and its pizza offering. We were limited to the downtown venues and had to taste and identify the location of each pie and rank it. We had a great time eating pizza on the deck and having some laughs on a beautiful Friday night in Grand Forks. I realized I need to eat out more considering I only got 1 out of 5 locations correct!! But one sure thing I realized about the get together is that many people can get stuck looking for the Clark Griswald experience! I know, Ive been living it a little as of late. But I suppose I should explain a little bit better for those who dont watch Chevy Chase movies that often. In the movie National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Clark Griswald tries to create the ultimate Christmas for his family and continually fails. His problem was that he always remembered his childhood Christmases being perfect and effortless. But no matter what he tries, the experience falls short of his memory. I think as kids we dont realize that it can take a little work to create fun times. It doesnt always take as much work as hosting Christmas for your family, but even the simplest get together requires reaching out to those you want to see. You know, making phone calls, sending emails, buying some food. But everyone needs fun in their lives and its always worth the effort! You need to look for unique experiences in something simple. I hope this will help the rest of you YPers out there as you get to know each other and the city you call home. Thanks for your time, Casey Koop

FEATURED YOUNG LEADER

This Section focuses on various individuals who make Grand Forks a great place to live.

Meet the McRaes

I am a dedicated husband, father, friend and community servant. My wife and I moved to Grand Forks in 2010 with our beautiful children Andrew and Aniya. We both work from home for Amazon but have big plans on exercising our entrepreneurial muscles by creating a unique business here in this wonderful community. Since becoming residents, we have realized that this is where we were meant to live and raise our kids because everyone has been so welcoming and familial. Whether we're fishing, camping, going on outdoor adventures, or bbq'ing, we belief that through God all of this has been possible. We are truly blessed. On a daily basis we teach our children to always be considerate of others and be good people and to live in a place where they actually see it in action through the associations we have made is really awesome. My wife and I love to volunteer and meet new people and Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals really has created a great satisfaction in both of those areas. I realized very early in my YP "career" that I wanted to completely immerse myself in this organization and be a part of this unique experience. My family has been made to feel very welcomed and we are humbled by this new experience. Kudos YP!!!! Patrick McRae www.spokenwordandpoetry.blogspot.com
