questioned in connection with the reported crime, according to a UI news release. As of Wednesday, authorities had not made any arrests and did not release any details on the alleged victim or identity of the players. UI police, Iowa City police, and the state Division of Criminal Investigation all responded to the scene Wednesday. There were at least three Iowa City police cars, a UI police van and car, and a criminal-investigations van stationed at Hillcrest. A female Iowa City police officer was overheard on her cell phone saying authorities needed to check rooms 123 and 164 in Hillcrest, while other officers were casing a room in the N200s around 3:17 p.m. The officer was walking in a stairwell from the second floor of the residence hall to the first floor, which she then walked on to. Its been a year since Rob Cornell last picked up a Pipetman in a laboratory. But hes paid his dues, to say the least. As a sophomore at Stanford University more than 20 years ago, his first lab job was collecting eggs from boxes full of grasshoppers without pay. At some point, one would panic, and they would all try to fly up, he chuckled. That was my start. Cornells trek through the realm of academic research took him from a volunteer

Usually Mickey Mouse, UI President Sally Mason, and comedian Stephen Colbert dont fall into the same category, but Iowa City residents made it happen in last weeks election. At the end of election day, all three figures had received write-in votes. Precinct workers always find a mixture of nonsensical and serious write-in votes in each election, said Sarah Reisetter, deputy auditor at the Johnson County Auditors Office. But this year, they found a lot more. The number of write-in votes was five times more this year than in the 2005 City Council election, with 475 and 82 cast respectively. There was an overall high turnout, and more specifically, a huge number of early voters, largely made up of students. Reisetter said the students may

UI freshman Will Downey has a simple request. No talking while this is on, he shouted. The stereo plays a track more likely to be found at a sixth-grade sleepover than a college dorm room: I Wont Say (Im in Love) from the soundtrack to Disneys Hercules. Downey nods his head along to the music. He tries to play it straight, focusing on his video game. But as the song goes on, the wry curvature of his sarcastic grin creeps across his face.

numbers in the north wing of Hillcrest. Officers and criminal investigators were also seen taking dark-tinted plastic bags and a plastic container from the room in the N200s. At least five authorities were around the room door or knocking on other doors in the hall. Around 3:15 p.m., an Iowa City police officer was also seen taking an object wrapped in brown paper into a criminalinvestigations van and an investigator was seen carrying an investigations kit. Two resident assistants and other residence hall officials declined to comment further Wednesday. A UI police officer also declined comment. An Iowa City police officer said around 3:20 p.m. reporters were not allowed in the residence hall. The incident allegedly occurred one weekend prior to the Purdue contest, just hours after the Illinois game in the early morning hours on Oct. 14. The report of the assault comes around a month after reporters questioned Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz about the status of Everson after he didnt travel with the team to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Purdue game on Oct. 20. At his weekly press conference Oct. 23, Ferentz said Everson wasnt injured but iterated twice that Everson wasnt in good standing. Ferentz did not elaborate on Eversons situation but said the Oct. 30 Dominique Douglas, receiver, charged with fifth-degree theft Oct. 16 Dana Brown, reserve tailback, charged with domestic assault Sept. 16 Lance Tillison, safety, charged with OWI Sept. 6 Clint Huntrods, long-snapper, charged with public urination, interference with official acts, and public intoxication Aug. 19 Douglas and Anthony Bowman, receivers, charged with unauthorized use of a credit card July 19 Brown charged with fifth-degree theft July 15 Bradley Fletcher, cornerback, charged with OWI July 2 Arvell Nelson, backup quarterback, charged with driving with a suspended license

player hadnt practiced with the team the week prior to the Purdue game. UI President Sally Mason was traveling Wednesday but released a statement about the incident in a UI news release. The safety of all members of our campus and community is of paramount importance, so I am deeply disturbed to learn of allegations of a sexual assault, she said. The university will do all that it can to ensure that the investigation is thorough and that due process is followed so that a just resolution can be achieved.

Mason added that the topic of sex assaults has weighed on community members minds this year. She said everyone deserves a safe environment. This new and unwelcome news is a sharp reminder that our collective efforts have only begun, she said. Athletics Director Gary Barta also weighed in on the severity of the alleged incident. Im obviously concerned for the well-being and safety of the young woman, he said in a statement. Im concerned there are football players included in the investigation. Ferentz said in the release that he had discussed the matter with Barta and said he was also concerned about the victim and her well-being. I am concerned that the football players are the subject of the investigation, he said. Both declined to comment any further, citing a continuing investigation. Seven Hawkeyes have accumulated at least 11 charges since July. UI freshman Nick Wittig, a Hillcrest resident, said he doubted whether the allegations are true. I dont really think the football players did that, he said. It just sounds like another Duke [lacrosse team] story to me, and we all know how that ended up.
