JC Whitfield & Patrick Smith

continues today. Both JC and Patrick thoroughly enjoyed the huge ecosystem of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. This enjoyment carries over to Arizona as they now enjoy the deserts, canyons, mountains and rivers of Arizona through their efforts with the Sun City Festival Hiking Club. JC and Patrick were married in 2009 while flying over the valley called Jackson Hole with the preacher and a witness in the back seats and they honeymooned at the Oshkosh Fly-In. JC got her pilots license years before Patrick and is a great co-pilot. They feel that the mountain view from Festival is inspiring and flying in the area, as well as the rest of Arizona, is also wonderful. More often than flying, they enjoy the people and activities of Sun City Festival including, desert biking, golf, the Sage Fitness Center, pickleball, and parties. They have always lived out of town so Sun City Festival works perfect for them. After all, Whats not to like about Sun City Festival?!

Patrick grew up in eastern Virginia and upon becoming a Ranger with the National Park Service, worked in park areas nationwide, including Devils Tower, Shenandoah, Everglades, and Crater Lake. He served his final 10 years as Chief Ranger Naturalist at Grand Teton. JC served as Jackson Holes Trauma Therapist and was a Search and Rescue Team member doing avalanche, swift-water, cave, backcountry and technical climbing rescue work. She also enjoyed her hunter-jumper and national dressage horse competitions. After retirement, Patrick served as a volunteer for the Park and Forest Services, and for 10 years as a Commissioner on the Jackson Hole Airport Board. To be better informed on the Board, he got his pilots license, thereby beginning flight-seeing that

Keeping Your Cool

As outside temperatures rise, odds of heat-related illness by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., increase substantially. Heat-related illness can be as minor Fitness/Wellness Director as fatigue and muscle cramps or as major as death. All heat-related problems are preventable. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat begins a cascade of worsening problems in the body. Symptoms of heat-related illness can be extreme thirst, headache, lightheadedness, nausea and vomiting, involuntary muscle contraction and fainting. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defines three different heat-related illnesses: HEAT CRAMPS - spasmodic muscular contraction brought on by excessive body heat. HEAT EXHAUSTION - collapse without loss of consciousness HEAT STROKE - the final stage of heat exhaustion in which the thermoregulatory system shuts down. This should be treated as a medical emergency. This leads to cardiac arrest and death. The most important thing to prevent heat-related illness is drinking plenty of nondiuretic fluids. Fluid consumption should be ongoing and not limited to times of heat exposure. How much water is enough? Most research recommends approximately 2.5 liters (about 2.6 quarts) of water per day for most adults. This quantity is the minimum requirement for daily living. Heat exposure and exercise increase a persons needs to a level far beyond the minimum requirement. For each additional 1,000 calories burned beyond the typical 2,000 per day, water needs increase by 35-40 ounces. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommendations are 500 ml (17 ounces) of water consumption two hours prior to exercise. During exercise, ACSM guidelines recommend 150 ml (about 5 oz) of water every fifteen minutes. During exercise in very hot or very humid conditions, water demands for cooling the body are even greater. From a weight perspective, 16 ounces of water should be consumed for every pound of body weight lost during exercise. A simple rule of thumb is to produce clear, frequent urine. Another way to minimize heat-related illness is simply to avoid the heat. Fitness facilities offer various methods of indoor exercise. A treadmill or stationary bike can be a very good friend when the outside temperature exceeds 100 degrees. Swimming or water aerobics are also great ways to avoid the heat. Or, exercise outside during the early morning hours when temperatures are coolest. Acclimation is another great way to minimize heat-related illness. Gradually increasing exposure over a period of time will teach the body to produce more sweat for greater cooling, and to better tolerate the stress of heat. Heat-related illness is a reality during the hot weather months. However, taking the right steps of appropriate dress, fluid consumption and avoiding exposure to the hottest part of the day can minimize chances of illness.
