Spencerville Schools ready for year with new mandates, staff

BY CYNTHIA YAHNA Herald Correspondent [email protected] SPENCERVILLE Superintendent Joel Hatfield has been busy keeping up with all the new mandates and information from the state concerning education. We have in-service training and a new grade card will be implemented. The training will be conducted by the staff, Hatfield said. To be honest with you, it is better if staff does the training; it helps them to take ownership. Hatfield also announced an upcoming event. There will be an open teachers meeting at 8:15 p.m. Thursday with social time beginning at 7:45 p.m. This is where the new staff will be introduced and the board is welcome to come, he said. He also told the board that he wants to get the cracks taken care of on the east parking lot and will eventually need to look at the west parking lot but the east needs it more, he said. We also put in for a wider sidewalk to be handicapped accessible, he added. Hopefully, we will find money from the government. Also, inside painting has been completed and the bus garage has been re-striped. The superintendent shared with the board the district Race to the Top representatives had an extensive meeting with the RttT Leadership Team, which lasted about four hours. New

Allen County Curriculum Coordinator Sally Tatham was introduced. Sally brings a lot of experience and expertise to this position, Hatfield said. I think she is going to be tremendous. Hatfield also shared the results of his research into the substitute teacher pay schedule. I did some research to see where we are with Allen County. We are competitive, so substitute teachers will want to come here. We are not the lowest, Hatfield told the Board. Board member Spencer Clum spoke about the Budget Bill and asked if his understanding that if a child is home-schooled they can still play sports and participate in band and other extra-curricular activities the school offers is correct. Hatfield affirmed that understanding. The state auditors will be in the school on Monday. The staff has prepared a special room for them for the annual audit. It was reported Kim Sharp conducted a meeting Thursday for bus drivers. Sharp will perform bus routing duties for the 2013-14 school year. The resignation of Scott Kayatin as varsity assistant wrestling coach was accepted. Kayatin is going to chiropractor school in New York. Teacher mentors were approved and include Jeana Byer as mentor for Shane Strausbaugh and Jennifer Pugh as mentor for Barbie Mabry. See SPENCERVILLE, page 10

That 70s Show actress Lisa Robin Kelly dies CORRECTIONS

LOS ANGELES (AP) That 70s Show actress Lisa Robin Kelly has died at age 43. Manager Craig Wyckoff says Kelly died Wednesday at a Los Angeles addiction treatment facility she had entered early this week. No official cause of death was disclosed. Kelly portrayed Laurie Forman, sister of Topher Graces lead character Eric, on the Fox series. It concluded in 2006. Unlike some of her co-stars Grace, Ashton Kutcher and Laura Prepon Kelly fell out of the spotlight after appearing on the sitcom until she started making headlines for personal troubles. SAN DIEGO (AP) The California man who abducted a teenage family friend and tortured her mother and 8-yearold brother before killing them exchanged more than a dozen calls with the 16-year-old girl in the hours before the slaying. Exactly how James Lee DiMaggio tortured them or why he and Hannah Anderson exchanged about 13 calls wasnt immediately clear, but the new details in court papers fueled questions about how and why he targeted his best friends family and fled with a girl who has said she felt uncomfortable around him. Firefighters found the body of Christina Anderson, 44, near a crowbar and what appeared to be blood next to her head. DiMaggio is believed to have shot and killed their family dog, found under a sleeping bag in the garage with blood close to its head. Investigators found 8-yearold Ethans body as they sifted through rubble. DiMaggio tortured and killed the mother and son, San Diego County sheriffs Detective Darren Perata wrote, offering no elaboration, in the warrants released Wednesday. Hannah was rescued days later in the Idaho wilderness, where authorities killed DiMaggio in a shootout. The warrants do not indicate the time, duration or content of the calls that DiMaggio and Hannah exchanged before she was picked up at cheerleading practice Aug. 4, hours before firefighters found DiMaggios burning garage in Boulevard, a rural town 65 miles east of San Diego. Jan Caldwell, a San Diego County sheriffs spokeswoman, said they may have been discussing pickup times. Investigators who searched DiMaggios home found letters from Hannah, an incendiary device, a handcuff box and arson wire, according to a warrant posted on the website of KFMB-TV. The warrant does not elaborate on the letters or nature of the devices. DiMaggio was extraordinarily close to both children, driving Hannah to gymnastics meets and Ethan to football practice. The warrants say the former telecommunications technician took Hannah on multi-day trips, most recently to Malibu and Hollywood. Hannah acknowledged being uncomfortable around DiMaggio before the ordeal, saying on a social-media site earlier this week that he once told her that he was drawn to her. He said it was more like a family crush like he had feelings as in he wanted nothing bad to happen to me, she wrote on the ask.fm site.

Hannah said she didnt tell her parents because DiMaggio was his fathers best friend and I didnt want to ruin anything between them. She said she didnt learn that her mother and brother had died until authorities told her in the hospital after she was rescued. She said she cried all night. San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore has been adamant that Hannah was an unwilling victim from start to finish. I cant make it any clearer, he said at a news conference Monday. Hannahs father, Brett Anderson, declined to take questions after making a brief statement at a fundraiser for the family in Lakeside, an east San Diego suburb and Hannahs hometown. Caldwell said investigators may offer a more detailed account in the future but that some questions may never be answered. Right now shes with her family and, of course, with some friends, and shes just happy to be here, Brett Anderson told reporters outside the Boll Weevil restaurant, which hosted the fundraiser. Anderson said he spoke with the horseback riders who saw the pair in the Idaho wilderness and alerted authorities, thanking them for saving his daughters life.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The 10-year-old New Mexico boy lived in an abusive, filthy home and had tried desperately to get help to stop the beatings he and his younger siblings had for years faced at the hands of their abusive father, his attorney says. Then, one day in 2009, prosecutors say, he put a gun to the head of his 250-pound father and killed him at their Belen, N.M., home. After years of stops and starts, the boy is scheduled to face a jury this month for first-degree murder in a rare prosecution expected to highlight the debate over whether children that young are capable of the pre-meditation required for such a serious charge. Experts say the boy, now 14 and living in Oklahoma, is just one of a handful of very young children in the nations history to face such a conviction. Ive been practicing law for 20 years and this is the saddest case Ive ever seen, said the boys attorney, William J. Cooley. I dont know why this is even going to court. Lemuel L. Martinez, 13th Judicial District Attorney, declined to talk about the case with The Associated Press. But he defended the decision to pursue the first-degree murder charge. We are going to court because we believe we have enough evidence to meet the burden of proof, Martinez said.

BALTIMORE (AP) An Ohio school district is refusing to let a seventh-grade girl play football, prompting requests that the board change its policies on female athletes. Makhaela Jenkins has played youth football around Baltimore, southeast of Columbus, but isnt allowed on the active roster for her school team because the district doesnt allow girls to participate in games and contact drills. Liberty Union-Thurston District superintendent Paul Mathews said the longstanding policy doesnt violate any gender-related regulations, because the district offers girls other, non-contact athletic options. We are not violating Title IX, Mathews told WTTETV in Columbus, referring to the federal law that bans gender discrimination in federally funded school programs, including sports. We have opportunities for girls, but those opportunities do not include contact sports.

It was a Saturday morning and the Rev. Jaman Iseminger had just dropped by to help some volunteers as they cleaned up the cemetery next door to the Bethel Community Church in Southport, south of Indianapolis. Then a homeless woman entered the church and confronted him. She pulled a gun and killed the 29-year-old pastor, leaving behind a wife and a 2-year-old daughter. There are all kinds of tragic details ... but heres whats really haunting about that case, said Jimmy Meeks, a Hurst, Texas, patrolman who is also a licensed Southern Baptist preacher. When they looked on his desk they discovered that his sermon that Sunday was going to be about the rising number of pastors around the world who were dying for their faith. Theres no way he could have known that he was next in line. The numbers are starting to add up, so much so that the bloodshed in religious sanctuaries is beginning to get attention from religious and government leaders, if not from national news media. The pivotal year was 1999, when a gunman killed seven people and wounded seven more during a youth service at Wedgewood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Since then, at least 441 people have died violent deaths in American churches, said Meeks,

Protecting the flock from gun violence

On Religion
one of several experts who have kept track of police reports since the Wedgewood shooting. At least 151 people have been killed in Baptist churches since 1999, more than any other religious group. At this point, Americans are more likely to be killed at church than in a school, said Meeks. The total for 2012 alone was 75 dead. One reason the trend has stayed out the news, he said, is that the FBI defines a mass shooting as one claiming three or more victims. The violence in religious sanctuaries -- most of it linked to family disputes, mental illness or strife inside a small circle of people -- rarely hits that threshold. While there have been mass shootings in sanctuaries, that is not the norm. But the threat must be taken seriously. You are rarely going to see someone walk

into a church and try to shoot everybody down, said Meeks. What we see are people getting angry and then getting violent. The anger means the same thing, time after time: Someone didnt get what he wanted. Things didnt go the way somebody wanted them to go. This past June, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA released a 34-page booklet of guidelines for religious groups planning ways to prevent and respond to various kinds of emergencies, including gun violence. It hints at one of the toughest issues facing religious leaders -- trying to identify, ahead of time, people who might threaten individuals in their pews or even the congregation as a whole. For starters, planning team members must share their own knowledge of threats and hazards the house of worship and surrounding community has faced in the past or may face in the future. The sobering reality is that religious sanctuaries often contain large groups of people, including children and the elderly, and the better first responders ... are able to discern these threats and react quickly, the more lives can be saved. The temptation, Meeks said, is to think that megachurches -- perhaps those known for taking controversial public stands -- face the greatest threats. The reality is that most

big congregations have very detailed security plans in place, often led by members who are active in, or retired from, nearby police departments. Truth is, its usually leaders of small congregations that have trouble facing the fact that their members could be at risk. I hear it all the time, said Meeks, who has led 80 local and regional workshops (churchsafetyseminar.com) on these topics. People will say, You mean we cant trust God to protect his own people in his own house? Well, a church is a brick building with a cross on it, but criminals dont care about that. Theres no rhyme or reason to what some people are going to do. ... You have to have a plan. You have to face tough questions and realize that something evil really could happen inside your church. So does your church have two or three men who are ready to die in order to protect others from harm? Are your people ready to act? you cannot keep your dog in your own yard, then please dont have one. I and every other sheep farmer beg you. Even though the dogs that killed my sheep may have escaped their yard through a hole in a fence, I happen to know that a certain percentage of owners feel their dogs cant fully be dogs unless they are allowed to run free. I meet them every day. If you are one of these dog owners, I wish you could have visited the night after the attack. The sheep were silent no more. Lambs cried for mothers they no longer had, and ewes for babies that ceased to exist. It was pretty sad. The damage done was substantial, not just financially, but emotionally as well. As for the two dogs, I dont just have a pellet gun anymore. And this time I squeezed the trigger. There was no other option. On the four week anniversary of the massacre another stray dog made his way to our yard. Ford was reunited with his owners the next morning via our Facebook page. I have to tell you, a family reunion was not my first inclination when I found him. Fortunately for both of us, he proved to be a nice, friendly, harmless dog, and this behavior saved his life. After the tragedy of the month before, Im grateful he allowed me that choice.

Crites big hole to fill for Bearcat linksters

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] SPENCERVILLE Spencerville head golf coach Mike Harmon has turned the Bearcats into a consistently solid team in his previous eight years at the helm, building a 129-70 overall mark (89-47 in the Northwest Conference). That includes last falls runner-up unit that ended up 16-2 in the league (23-4 overall) behind the now-departed Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds. However, this Division III crew wont have four-year leader Evan Crites to build around. The loss of Evan to graduation is huge. He was Player of the Year in the NWC last year (first-teamer in 2011) with an average of 37.2 for nine holes, so his score will Spencervilles boys golfers for the current season are, from left, Brian Wood, Mitchell Youngpeter, James Schaad, be tough to replace, Harmon Keaton Gillispie, Chance Campbell, Parker Campbell and head coach Mike Harmon. Absent is Austin Keiber. (Delphos noted. However, the other Herald/Jim Metcalfe) guys have stepped up so far

this year to soften the blow a little. Crites was the sole departure due to graduation, though one other would-be veteran chose not to come back out in 2013. Four players are back from 2012, led by fourth-year senior and top returnee James Schaad (46.3), third-year junior Chance Campbell (46.6) and veteran sophomores Mitchell Youngpeter (47) and Keaton Gillispie (65). Harmon also has one more option than last seasons sixman roster this crew has seven but the rest of the unit has freshmen: Brian Wood, Parker Campbell and Austin Keiber. All of our new guys are promising. Brian has been playing golf for a few years now and spent a lot of time working on his game this summer, Harmon continued. We need the freshmen to step up and help us get that fourth score. See BEARCATS, page 7

Hoods Cougs striving for continued golf success

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] VAN WERT Van Wert golf coach Jeff Hood had a pretty successful 2012 for the Cougars, going 11-1 in duals. In his four-year career at the Cougar helm, he has a 39-7 mark. With four starters back, including a pair of Western Buckeye League honorees, he likes his chances to continue that kind of success as the season of 2013 progresses. Our top four need to play as well as they are capable of doing since we have no varsity experience at the back end, he explained. In several meets in the early going, those four seem to be doing quite well. The best of the crew coming back is junior All-WBL performer Brandon Hernandez, who is seeking to improve on last falls 40.21-stroke average over nine holes. The next three all earned All-WBL Honorable-mention status a year ago: senior Lucas Etzler (45.8), senior Justin Price (45.1) and classmate Adam Jurczyk (45.5). Hood did say good-bye to two solid linksters last spring in Tyler Turnwald and Jacob Brake, so he will be depending on the continuing development of promising new varsity players in

Knights an all-veteran links crew for Best

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] CONVOY Crestview golf coach Jeremy Best has gone from the inexperienced to the experienced in a year. In 2012, Best only had one veteran back from the year before. This season, he has every one of his top five back from 2012, which leaves the coach optimistic for 2013. We look to be much improved over last year. We are still very young but return some on-course experience, he noted. The most experienced player and expected number one is third-year senior Jake Mengerink. The other experienced performers include junior Jon

junior Alex Miller, sophomore Nick Etter and sophomore Jacob Covey. As well, freshman Gabe Rollins and classmate Carter Eikenbary could be heard from as the season goes on. Despite that, Hood is always looking for solid results. We are always looking to compete, especially in the WBL. I expect us to be in the top three with Bath as the odds-on favorite at this point and Shawnee will be good as well, Hood added. Van Wert continues its current links campaign this morning on the greens of Foxs Den in Celina for the Celina Invitational.

Miller getting comfortable with being in spotlight

By RUSTY MILLER Associated Press COLUMBUS Braxton Miller didnt make any headlines during the offseason, at least not for anything he did off the field. The Ohio State quarterback has been under a microscope for the past two years, ever since he first took over as the Buckeyes starting quarterback. About the last thing he wants to do is be a focal point for what he does on his own time. Oh, no. I try to stay out of all that stuff. Im good on that, he replies when asked if he learned anything from all the travails Heisman winner Johnny Manziel went through in his private life this past offseason. Miller is a celebrity, make no mistake about that. Hes downright famous around Ohio. But he has no intention of letting that change who he is. Ill just be the same guy I am right now, humble and talking to you guys, he said, an average 20-year-old kid surrounded by maybe 100 reporters and photographers hanging on his every word. When I leave here, Im just like a regular person. Ill just keep it levelheaded and go about my business when I go on the field. When I leave the field, Im just this guy. The junior says he doesnt mind all the attention, even though almost everyone would classify him as softspoken bordering on shy. At the very least, hes grown used to being sought out by fans and media. It comes with putting up these numbers: 1,271 yards rushing, 2,039 passing and 28 total touchdowns. His teammates notice the change in him. Thats a really cool thing to see out of a guy thats a superstar talent, offensive lineman Jack Mewhort said. I tell people all the time, his best quality is his humility. Hes not one of those guys wholl be in the headlines. Thats really a cool thing as a quarterback, especially a guy of his caliber. Now, with Ohio State on the cusp of what could be a memorable season, the junior is trying hard to be a more forceful leader. He may never be the guy who gets in a teammates grill and chews him out but theres no reason why he cant get other players to produce just because he plays so Miller hard and wants to win so badly. Its been a bit of a struggle to get Miller to be more assertive but hes making progress. Hes never been a bad guy, hes always been a great guy, coach Urban Meyer said. But now hes got a little confidence to him. I call (quarterback) the most unique position in sport, where youre allowed to be a little introverted but you have to be able to lead. I dont want to give him an A yet but hes pushing A work. Millers position coach, Tom

Herman, has worked hard to try to help bring out Millers personality. I think he was and still is and will continue to be a tough nut to crack, Herman said. Hes very guarded, as has been well-documented. Hes a very introverted person. Thats not bad; none of that is bad. But it lends itself to a much tougher job for a guy like me to come in and say, Hey, since high school Im your fourth offensive coordinator in four years or whatever the case may be and, oh by the way, youve got to trust me 100 percent. It takes time. Trust is earned, its not just given. There is no question that his teammates respect Miller. They see how he applies himself, the extra time he puts in, how much he cares. Hes more mature, hes more of a leader, hes more vocal, running back Jordan Hall said. He was one of our hardest workers in the offseason, too. Miller is considered one a handful of top candidates for the Heisman Trophy. It wasnt so long ago that the Ohio State signal-caller might have dreaded facing the prospect of the interminable national spotlight that comes with a Heisman campaign. Now, he may not welcome it but at least hes at ease. He trusts others to make it as effortless for him as possible. Coach Meyer does a good job about that (Heisman talk), Miller added. He always tells us how good we are, how bad we did this day and blah blah blah. We have to keep the momentum how it was last year, just keep that going. Our strength is our desire to get better and learn the game. Our top guys worked pretty hard this summer and want to be the best. Each golfer on the team has his own individual strengths, which we hope to continue to improve on. We also have good team chemistry. Still, with a few new guys, Harmon knows there are things to address. We will work a lot on the basics and rules of the game. There is always room for improvement in everyones short game, so that will be a big one for everybody; they need to work on getting chip shots closer and staying away from 3-putts, Harmon added. Most high-school golfers really need to work on course management, so we will focus on improving that as well and getting the guys to make good decisions on the golf course. We are working on some swing changes and consistency with the guys. Putting will be a big focus this year. Our goal is to win every time we play but play the game properly and with etiquette. I expect us to win in every match. Our goal is to win the conference. I think we have a good chance to get out of sectionals this year. With his own team, Allen East, Bluffton and Lincolnview his picks for the top of the competitive NWC, Harmon has set some high goals for 2013. Any guy on our team has the potential to surprise this year. The older guys have improved quite a bit and should surprise some of our competition with some impressive scores; the younger guys are improving every day and could be shooting pretty good numbers by years end, he added. I am excited for this season. Our guys are playing well out of the gate this year and I expect them to continue to get better. I think we have a strong chance at winning the conference and doing well in the postseason. Finding a good fourth score will be crucial to how successful we are. Another step in that direction will be at the Columbus Grove tri-match (Country Acres) this morning.

GOP pushes rising stars amid internal skepticism

BOSTON (AP) The Republican Party launched its latest effort Thursday to sell itself to a more diverse segment of the population, acknowledging a glaring weakness in the GOPs ability to attract new voters in a country whose demographics are rapidly changing. Some prominent Republicans expressed immediate skepticism at the partys plans to shine a spotlight on its younger, minority up-and-comers. But Republican leaders say they can help broaden the partys appeal by changing the faces of the GOPs primary messengers. At stake is the Republican Partys ability to compete against Democrats in elections for years to come. We have this stereotype of Republicans being old, white, Anglo-Saxon men. But theres people like me that have been out there working for years, said 30-yearold New Hampshire state Rep. Marilinda Garcia, one of four people featured in a Rising Stars panel at the RNCs summer meeting in Boston. So theyre like, Why not have her talk about our values instead of Newt Gingrich all the time? RNC spokesmen have been instructed to promote Republicans like Garcia in media interviews, while other staffers have been hired to live and work in minority communities to pitch Republican values. GOP leaders say its an unprecedented effort. Doubts by some leading Republicans underscored the continuing identity crisis for a party still struggling to regroup after a painful 2012 election season. This is a baby step, said former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, an AfricanAmerican. Were talking 50-plus years of separation between African-Americans and the GOP that has only become progressively worse over the last 10 or so years. This stuff will not get done overnight. At this point, like many Hispanic con-

Death toll soars to 638 in Egypt violence

UNITED NATIONS (AP) Weeping relatives in search of loved ones uncovered the faces of the bloodied, unclaimed dead in a Cairo mosque near the smoldering epicenter of support for ousted President Mohammed Morsi, as the death toll soared past 600 Thursday from Egypts deadliest day since the Arab Spring began. World condemnation widened for the bloody crackdown on Morsis mostly Islamist supporters, including an angry response from President Barack Obama, who canceled joint U.S.-Egyptian military maneuvers. Violence spread Thursday, with government buildings set afire near the pyramids, policemen gunned down and scores of Christian churches attacked. As turmoil engulfed the country, the Interior Ministry authorized the use of deadly force against protesters targeting police and state institutions. The Muslim Brotherhood, trying to regroup after the assault on their encampments and the arrest of many of their leaders, called for a mass rally on Friday in a challenge to the governments declaration of a monthlong state of emergency and a dusk-to-dawn curfew. At least 638 people were confirmed killed and nearly 4,000 wounded in the violence sparked when riot police backed by armored vehicles, snipers and bulldozers smashed the two sit-ins in Cairo where Morsis supporters had been camped out for six weeks to demand his reinstatement. It was the deadliest day by far since the 2011 popular uprising that overthrew autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak and plunged the country into more than two years of instability. Also on Thursday, The United Nations Security Council called on both the Egyptian government and the Muslim Brotherhood to exercise maximum restraint and end the violence spreading across the country. Council members called for national reconciliation. The Health Ministry said that 288 of those killed were in the largest protest camp in Cairos Nasr City district, while 90 others were slain in a smaller encampment at al-Nahda Square, near Cairo University. Others died in clashes that broke out between Morsis supporters

servatives, I have to see it to believe it, said Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles and a part of the George W. Bush administration. Im familiar with RNC efforts toward the Hispanic community that go back a long time. Indeed, the GOPs latest push to court minority voters follows similar efforts by Republican leaders dating back at least to the 1980s, when the GOP under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush repeatedly declared black and Hispanic outreach a priority. Some Republicans suggest that things wont change in earnest until the party embraces different policies and abandons anti-immigrant rhetoric. Steele cited efforts by Republican legislatures to disenfranchise minority voters by passing strict voter identification laws, while Aguilar and others cited consistent resistance among House Republicans to a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

and security forces or anti-Morsi protesters elsewhere in the Egyptian capital and other cities. Mohammed Fathallah, the ministry spokesman, said earlier that the blood-soaked bodies lined up in the El Iman mosque in Nasr City were not included in the official death toll. It was not immediately clear if the new figures included the ones at the mosque. Inside the mosque-turnedmorgue, the names of the dead were scribbled on white sheets covering the bodies, some of them charred, and a list with 265 names was plastered on the wall. Heat made the stench from the corpses almost unbearable as the ice brought in to chill the bodies melted and household fans offered little relief.

Obesity very high in 13 states; many in the South

ATLANTA (AP) Adult obesity still isnt budging, the latest government survey shows. The national telephone survey found 13 states with very high rates of obesity last year. Overall, the proportion of U.S. adults deemed obese has been about the same for years now. A plateau is better than rising numbers. But its discouraging because were plateauing at a very high number, said Kelly Brownell, a Duke University public policy expert who specializes in obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does the survey each year, and recently released 2012 results. At least 30 percent of adults were obese in 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. In 2011, a dozen states reached that threshold. Louisiana and Mississippi led the list. In both, nearly 35 percent of adults were obese. Colorado was lowest, with less than 21 percent obese. Its not surprising states in the South and Midwest top the charts year after year, experts say. Many states in those regions have higher poverty rates. When you have a limited income, you have to buy foods that are cheap. And foods

that are cheap tend to have a lot of sugar and salt and fat, said Dr. George Bray, an obesity expert at Louisiana State University. The CDC defines someone as obese if their weight-to-height ratio called a body mass index hits 30 or higher. A 5-foot-9 person would be considered obese at 203 pounds or more. The CDCs annual telephone survey asks adults their height and weight. Overall, nearly 28 percent of Americans were obese, the 2012 survey found. Thats roughly the same as its been since 2008. Another CDC survey which weighs and measures participants is considered more accurate. Since the middle of the last decade, that survey has found that around 35 percent of U.S. adults are obese. The story may be different with children. A CDC study released last week showed for the first time slight drops in obesity for lowincome preschoolers in 18 states. Experts called that report encouraging, but note it studied children fed through a federal program which provides food vouchers and other services. The decline in obesity was largely attributed to program changes instituted in 2009 that eliminated juice from infant food packages, provided less saturated fat, and made it easier to buy fruits and vegetables.

NASA, Navy practice space-capsule recovery

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) During the glory days of the U.S. space program in the 1960s and 70s, astronauts returning to Earth splashed down at sea in their capsules and were picked up by the Navy in a triumphant moment that made for stirring TV. Now, NASA and the Navy are training again for the first such recovery in a generation. On Thursday, they completed several days of tests, practicing the retrieval of an unmanned mock-up of the Orion capsule that the U.S. hopes to send someday to an asteroid and Mars. Navy divers and the crew of the USS Arlington carried out the exercise in the calm waters of the Elizabeth River

at a Naval Station Norfolk pier. In a statement, Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of Navys U.S. Fleet Forces Command, welcomed the chance to take part again in recovering NASA astronauts just as we did nearly a halfcentury ago in support of Americas quest to put a man on the moon.
