Bassetts Market, a locally owned family business who
has called Ottawa County its home since the late 1800s,
has announced a major change in its marketing direction.
As of Oct. 24, the famous Bassetts weekly fier will now be
a regular insert into The Beacon.
We are excited about partnering with John Schaffner
and The Beacon, said store owner Mike Bassett. Their
audited circulation and readership are a perfect match for
our store and our customers.
Beacon publisher John Schaffner stated, We have had
Bassetts Market as a customer for a long period of years,
and I have always enjoyed our relationship with Mike and
his loyal staff. It has always been a question of date of re-
lease for the fier. However, market circumstances have
changed dramatically in the last 10 years, and Mike feels
the need to get his message out there to the maximum
number of folks.
Bassetts Market is not only Ottawa Countys largest lo-
cally owned and independent grocery retailer, they are also
one of Ottawa Countys biggest community contributors.
A case in point is that they are the sponsor for the next
event for the Firelands Musical Arts Series. Bassetts has
traditionally supported local charities in the community
and has given thousands of dollars back in contributions
and sponsorships.
Beacon Publisher John Schaffner welcomes Mike Bassett
and the Bassetts Market fier to The Beacon family of
insert customers.

BY DAVE HIRT
It is a quiet little New England town a mile or so off the
interstate and just east of Danbury, CT. Jan and I came
here to see how the 26 trees that our community donated
were doing and to bring the sign We Will Remember
With You to Newtown. Elizabeth Rallo, the leader of the
Newtown Recovery Team, directed us to the Newtown
Municipal Center, where we met with Chris Kelsey. He
is the tax assessor for Newtown and also on the recov-
ery team, as well the manager of the Toy Warehouse. As
the donations came in Chris was in charge of managing
them, and, yes, they did need a warehouse. There were
56,784 donations of just Teddy Bears alone.
After a friendly chat at government center, Chris asked
if we wanted to go out and see the trees. At this point
I hadnt gotten the sign out of the car as I was curious
to see where and how it might be placed, depending on
where and how the trees were planted. My assumption
was that they would be planted in a semi-circle or as a
class room setting, or something else creative, but that all
of them would be planted in one place.
Chris then told me that they had made good use of our
donation, planting them in many locations across town
to enhance their parks. This then piqued my interest as
I wasnt quite expecting some random planting of our
trees across the city of Newtown. That was until I saw
the frst tree.
As we came down the steps from the government cen-
ter, Chris pointed across the way to a soccer feld and
said we could see the frst one right from here. The view
was profound. I was awestruck and speechless. There
on the side of the soccer feld stood a single, solitary, 3
foot high blue spruce. Planted at the sideline, it stood
there waiting, just as a small child awaiting his turn to get
in the game...almost as if he never left. As I mentioned
this to Chris, he just looked at me, smiled and said, Yes,
we know. What he didnt have to say was that these are
the places the kids played and enjoyed themselves and
this is how we want them remembered.
We then drove a short distance to Dickinson
Park. There they have a skateboard park, a basketball
court and walking trails that wind back and forth over
a bubbly little creek. Again, the trees they planted there
stood out. They were different. The little evergreens
were like the kids waiting to fy their kites, or just taking
a relaxing break between games. It was the same thing
again at Treadwell Park with its tennis courts, swimming
pool, and soccer felds, and, of course, more trees.
New England is beautiful this time of year with its trees
wearing their fall colors. Temperatures are cool and
some trees are even starting to loose their leaves, but not
ours. They will continue to wear their green colors and
be the symbol of new life and rebirth as they stand sentry
over the parks of Newtown. The gift from our commu-
nity has become much more than a donation or a me-
morial. It has become 26 separate memorials and more
than anything I could have ever imagined Even to the
most casual observer, these trees are profoundly differ-
ent. For the kids, this was their home, this is where they
lived, and where they played and enjoyed themselves,
and this is how we can remember them.

Hirt and Danbury Township Trustee

the trees donated by Danbury Town-
ship citizens in memory of the 26
people lost at the Sandy Hook El-
ementary school shooting.

Niagara on the Lake lesson
Let me tell you about our weekend
in Niagara Falls, Canada. We arrived
at dusk,in our room overlooking
the Falls, waiting for the lights to
come on over the Falls. We went to a
very nice restaurant to overlook the
Falls. No lights! Finally, the second
evening, we deduced our United
States government had turned off
the lights, saving 1 Flip Switcher and
annoying a lot of people. Our day
included a beautiful short road trip
to Niagara On The Lake. Oh, my,
why cant Port Clinton take a lesson
from this nostalgic, charming town.
Beautiful plantings on the sidewalks,
inviting shops, galleries, ice cream,
etc. This is a destination town. Why
cant Port Clinton do the same! We
have all the natural resources, but
none of the enthusiasm!
Wake up, Port Clinton!
Sandy Schaffner
Dear Port Clinton,
Dont do it! I mean Waterworks
Park. All these promises of jobs and
income to the city is so ridiculous.
We hear what we want to hear, and
when these promises are presented,
we want to believe them. Born and
raised in Port Clinton, I have seen so
much of the area shoreline sold and
built up. Please let our children and
grandchildren enjoy the last piece
of shoreline we have. Thinking that
this property will be the answer to
all Port Clinton fnancial problems
is ridiculous. Until laws are changed
nationwide, we will never have that
thriving community we once had.
Our jobs are in other countries.
Wake up Port Clinton. Keep and
protect the precious posessions we
have left.

adults through the zombie-fed station.
There will be a zombie morgue and triage
area and infected zone and many thrilling
surprises.
It has been a decade since Coast Guard
Station Marblehead held a haunted house

Port Clinton Middle School Fleet 7 began an interdisciplin-
ary unit revolving around the young adult book The Hunger
Games. Last Monday morning students gathered in the ex-
tended learning area, divided into their districts as they held
their own Reaping Ceremony. The Fleet 7 teachers dressed as
characters from the story while acting out the Reaping Cer-
emony, where two students from each district were randomly
selected as tributes from their district. See the Video or view
more pictures in the Photo Album at www.pccsd.net
Students will be participating in various challenges
throughout the unit. The challenges are both intellectual
(group quizzes, games, etc.) and physical (minute-to-win-it
style games, and more) in attempts for their district to win
the PCMS Hunger Games. Instead of tributes being eliminat-
ed, districts will be trying
to win these challenges in
order to earn Mockingjay
badges for their posters. At
the end of the unit, the dis-
trict with the most Mock-
ingjays will win a prize.
The Language Arts teach-
ers have been working to-
gether to create an inter-
active unit with the other
subjects: Math, Science,
Global Cultural Awareness,
Work & Family, and Art.
Ms. Mallory Myers, Lan-
guage Arts teacher stated,
Our goal with having our
own Hunger Games is to
have something the kids
can get excited about while
building teamwork and
unity, along with inspiring
random acts of kindness.
Random acts of kindness is
a theme discussed through-
out the story as well as in
many Port Clinton Middle
School programs.

Port Clinton High School recently announced the Student of
the Month for October is Ian Kyle. Ian has been involved in a wide
variety of extracurricular activities during the past four years at
PCHS. He is a member of Leadership Council, Touch of Class,
and last Spring joined Drama Club with a part in the musical,
Back to the 80s. Ian serves as the Treasurer of National Honor
Society and the Vice President of International Club. In addition,
he has been a four year member of the Redskin Basketball Team,
Baseball Team and three years on the Boys Soccer Team.
Next year, he has plans to major in Business and is currently in
the process of visiting colleges and universities in order to make
his college selection. Ian is the son of Kevin and Krista Kyle.
The Flagship Awards are part of Port Clinton City
School Districts recognition program to honor par-
ents, community members, staff and students that
help the district fulfll its motto of Proudly Charting
a Course for Success. At the October 21 meeting, the
Port Clinton Board of Education recognized the fol-
lowing individuals with Flagship Awards.
Bob Beck, Captain Award
Dedicated, accountable, hard-workingthese are all
terms to describe Mr. Bob Beck. As the previous PCHS
Assistant Principal, Mr. Beck spent countless hours at
PCHS for various school events. He was always willing
to go the extra mile. For several years, he even spent 24-
hour shifts at the high school for the American Cancer
Relay for Life. During this time he wasnt just relaxing
he was on-call to all committee members rounding
up tables, setting up audio equipment, allowing access
to computer equipment for the committee and much
more.
Most recently, the special education department was
fortunate to have Mr. Becks dedication. He met with
educators, parents, and students to ensure all Port
Clinton City School District students received an out-
standing education. He was aware of constantly chang-
ing rules and legislation that affect special education.
These are just a few examples of many to show how
Mr. Beck went the extra mile with his time and ef-
fort to make Port Clinton City Schools a better place
for students. The Port Clinton Board of Education
thanked him for his leadership and commitment to
learning with a Flagship Captain Award.
Michelle Kodak, First Mate Award
Michelle Kodak volunteers as the Chair of Conces-
sions for the Port Clinton Music Boosters. In addition
to coordinating and stocking the stadium concession
stands, she has worked the past fve years at the visi-
tors side concession stand. With all the events at the
stadium, concession stands are open for business at all
varsity, JV, and middle school home football games, as
well as for track season in the spring. Michelle donates
countless hours of planning, ordering, shopping, prep-
ping, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining inventory.
She also organizes and directs all volunteers that work
at both the home and visitor stands. This is all done
while owning and operating her own bakery business,
The Cakerys Bakery, in downtown Port Clinton.
She is kind, patient, organized and has in depth
knowledge of what it takes to feed large quantities of
people. Cleanliness is a priority for Michelle to ensure
everything is up to food service standards. Visiting
customers always have positive comments for the PC

concession stands and appreciate the variety of items that are
offered. For volunteering her time and talent to the stadium
concession stands, the Board of Education recognized Mi-
chelle Kodak for her service to the Port Clinton City School
District to beneft students.
Fred & Dawn Zink, Zink Calls, Crew Award
Zink Calls is an outstanding community partner with Port
Clinton City Schools. Owners, Fred & Dawn Zink are always
willing to help with a wide range of school district activities.
They open the entire business for grade 5 students to tour
as part of career day, showing students each aspect of produc-
tion of making duck, goose & turkey calls and the various job
skills required. The staff is always welcoming and the students
enjoy the day. In addition, when PCHS students in Industrial
Technology wanted to make design and make duck calls, the
Zinks were once again gracious and visited the high school
and provided various supplies to the classroom and offered
guidance for students.
Recently, they offered the use of their entire warehouse for
the PC Fullbackers to host the 1st annual wild game feed.
With over 300 in attendance, the event raised funds for the
football program and was a great welcome for Coach Beau
Carmon and his family to the Port Clinton Community.
For all they do for the students, staff, and community of Port
Clinton City Schools, Dawn & Fred Zink received the Flagship
Crew Award.

We could not have asked for better weather or a better turnout. What a
wonderful weekend flled with food, rides, crafts and entertainment. When
we say that the festival and all of the great activities would not be possible
without the help of generous sponsors and volunteers, we truly mean this.
From the Village Departments to the property owners to the volunteers and
vendors it really takes everyone working together to make our festival the
success that it is. The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce would like

dont spend
another
winter alone
BY YANEEK SMITH
On Friday night, Port Clinton went up
against one of the Sandusky Bay Confer-
ences best teams and found out just how
diffcult it is to defend a player like Cody
Thompson.
The senior quarterback, who is headed
to the University of Toledo next year on a
football scholarship, had 203 yards of total
offense and scored three touchdowns in
leading the Tigers to a 48-8 victory at Ka-
lahari Field at Huron Memorial Stadium.
At frst, though, the Redskins were able to
move the ball and showed some promise
before a couple of key mistakes set them
back. Port Clinton took the games open-
ing drive 31 yards in nine plays to Hurons
38-yard-line, only to see the drive stall on a
couple of miscues that forced them back to
the 46 before punting the ball away. Unfor-
tunately, the punt was partially blocked by
the Tigers Danzell Harris, giving Huron
the ball at the Redskins 41 to set them up
with great feld position.
Huron (6-2, 4-1 SBC) scored on its
frst possession and controlled the game
throughout. The Tigers frst drive covered
59 yards in seven plays, culminating in a
touchdown when Thompson scored on
a 6-yard run on second-and-goal to give
Huron the lead for good at 7-0 with 4:24
left in the frst quarter.
On Port Clintons next play from scrim-
mage, Huron recovered a fumble at the
Port Clinton 34, and four plays later,
scored on running back Tommy Bogdens
10-yard run to push the lead to 14-0.
After forcing another punt, the Tigers
drove 59 yards in four plays, scoring when
Thompson hit Spencer Maddox from 30
yards out to make it 20-0 early in the sec-
ond period. Huron would add three more
touchdowns in the quarter to make it a
41-0 score at halftime.
Thompson fnished 8-of-11 for 166 yards
and two touchdowns and rushed fve times
for 37 yards and a score. He spread the ball
around to six different receivers, none of
whom caught more than two passes.
Port Clinton did show some signs of
promise in the second half, scoring on its
frst drive of the third quarter. The Skins
(0-8, 0-5 SBC) took it 82 yards in 12 plays,
converting on three third downs before
Brandon Moore found Nathan Stubble-
feld in the left fat for a 4-yard touchdown.
There are some things that we need to
learn how to fx in the last two games, said
Port Clinton head coach Beau Carmon.
Its been eight games and were still mak-
ing some of the same mistakes. (But) we
won the second half. Were not quitting
out there. We had some tremendous ef-
forts from some guys tonight, and we had
some guys make plays on defense.
I didnt like the way we came out in the
frst half. Hurons linebackers are pretty fast
and we werent able to throw the ball like I
wanted to. But (Huron) is a good team and
they made it tough for us tonight.
Moore had a nice game for the Skins, ac-
counting for 231 yards of total offense. He
completed 18-of-23 passes for 135 yards,
one touchdown and two interceptions and
rushed 19 times for 96 yards. Stubblefeld
caught a school-record 13 passes for 88
yards and a touchdown. Aidan Rospert
contributed as well, catching three passes
for 49 yards, including a key 38-yard re-
ception that helped to set up Port Clintons
lone touchdown. Running back Tristen
Mallory carried it 11 times for 45 yards to
help pace the rushing attack.
Beaus trying to put in his packages
and run a new system, Huron head coach
Tony Legando said of the Redskins. They
play a lot of young kids.
Currently ranked ffth in the Division V,
Region 16 computer rankings, the Tigers
are looking like a playoff team that has a
chance to make some noise in the postsea-
son.
After eight games, the table is set pretty
well for us, Legando said. Weve got two
good football teams that weve got to play.
Defensively, were becoming a much better
football team. Offensively, I think we are
utilizing a lot of different people. A lot of
guys caught passes and touched the foot-
ball. The offense is playing better because
of that.
Port Clinton falls to Huron, 48-8
BY YANEEK SMITH
In a back-and-forth game that featured
three frst-half ties, Oak Harbor took the
lead for good late in the second quarter
before slowly building a lead to defeat St.
Mary Central Catholic, 42-21.
The win, which came after two consecu-
tive losses, moves the Rockets to 4-4 overall
and 3-2 in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
The Panthers, meanwhile, drop to 2-6 and
1-4 in the league.
The trajectory of the game changed late
in the second quarter with 1:09 left when
Oak Harbor broke a 21-21 tie to take the
lead for good at 28-21 as quarterback Cole
Weirich hit Josh Sarahman from 27 yards
out for a touchdown.
SMCC responded, driving to the Rocket
12-yard-line before safety Jourdan Ma-
guire knocked away a pass from Panther
quarterback Trevor Fitzthum in the end
zone on the fnal play of the frst half.
The Rockets stopped SMCC on the open-
ing drive of the third quarter, forcing an
incompletion on fourth-and-3 at the OH
48 before responding with a touchdown
to push the lead to 35-21. The six-play
drive ended when running back Ben Gen-
zman scored from 24 yards out with eight
minutes remaining. For the game, Gen-
zman ran 25 times for 218 yards and two
scores and Andrew Heberling carried it 16
times for 185 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Cole Weirich fnished with
13 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown
and completed 1-of-2 passes for 27 yards
and a score. In all, the Rockets rushed 57
times for 493 yards.
Following a Panther turnover midway
thru the fourth quarter, Heberling scored
on a 65-yard touchdown to make it 42-21,
accounting for the fnal points.
We were just trying to run it at them,
and fortunately we were able to break a
few, Oak Harbor head coach Mike May
said. We knew their offense could score
points. We were going to just try and keep
running the ball at them and thats what
we were able to do. We were able to come
out and control the clock in the second
half. That was a big factor.
The Panthers got on the board frst, scor-
ing on a 10-yard pass from Fitzthum to De-
narius Harris with 2:08 left in the frst quar-
ter before Oak Harbor responded, driving
64 yards in seven plays before scoring on
a 23-yard run by Heberling with 11:25 re-
maining in
the second
quarter.

Ottawa Hills controlled this one throughout, scoring on
its frst two possessions before rolling to a 53-14 victory
over Danbury.
The Green Bears, who improved to 3-5 and and 3-2 in
the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, jumped out to a 14-0
lead behind two touchdown runs (4, 9) by Austin Stevens
before the Lakers (2-6, 1-4 TAAC) responded by driving
72 yards and scoring a touchdown on a 4-yard run by
Cody German to cut the defcit in half early in the second
quarter.
Unfortunately, the Lakers could not stop Ottawa Hills,
allowing them to score 10 more points before halftime to
take a 24-7 lead into the break.
The Green Bears pushed the lead to 31-7 on a 20-yard
pass from Stevens to Jake Wollenburg. Danbury did an-
swer, scoring on a 20-yard pass from Seth Vargo to Jimmy
Chamberlain to make it a 31-14 game midway thru the
third quarter. However, Ottawa Hills put the game away
by returning the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a score.
We didnt play up to our abilities, said Danbury head
coach Bryan Dudash. We played well at times but we just
didnt play defense. We knew going in what (Ottawa Hills)
was going to run, but we couldnt stop them.
Even though you know whats coming, it doesnt mat-
ter unless you really want to stick your nose in there and
make a play. We worked hard, had a great week of prepara-
tion, it was just a lack of execution.
German fnished with 20 carries for 100 yards and a
score and Vargo completed 12-of-23 passes for 147 yards
with a touchdown and an interception. Chamberlain had
nine catches for 93 yards and a touchdown and James
Dorko fnished with three catches for 48 yards.
This week, the Lakers travel to Gibsonburg to take on
the Golden Bears. Gibsonburg, which is 4-4 and 3-2 in the
TAAC, defeated Hilltop, 64-0, last week. Matt Tille com-
pleted 15-of-20 passes for 294 yards and six touchdowns
in the win. The Bears, who defeated the Lakers, 37-0, last
year, run the spread offense. Picked to fnish second in
the preseason poll, Gibsonburg has been inconsistent this
season, but has shown signs of promise and is capable of
scoring lots of points.

I have everything a family would love,
almost brand spanking new features
include plumbing, electrical, counter-
then some. My yard is enough space
to play, not overly large to maintain
and I even have a relaxing spot to
hang out in the back of the house.
My interior is spacious with 4 bed-
rooms and bunches of storage al-
lowing plenty of room for everyone
and everything. I am extremely clean
because my owner has taken great
care of me. THE BEST PART YET, I was
recently reduced to a more affordable
price.
