Township hosts first Veterans Day ceremony
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Sun
The right to vote, watching bad
reality TV and going to the beach
are among many freedoms we
cherish, all of which come with
the price tag of the lives of serv-
ice men and women.
Delran Township hosted its
first Veterans Day ceremony on
Tuesday, Nov. 12 honoring those
from Delran, Delanco and River-
side in a ceremony featuring Viet-
nam veteran keynote speaker
Joseph McElroy.
We are per-
manently and
deeply in debt
to the untold
number of
American vet-
erans who
chose to set
aside their per-
sonal ambi-
tions and
dreams to as-
sure the well-
being of our great nation, McEl-
roy said.
Service members filled the
chambers of the municipal com-
plex to be recognized for their
selflessness and effort to keep the
country safe.
Delran Township officials
spoke, in addition to the Delran
High School Choir performing a
variety of songs. Delran High
School's Interact Club assisted
with the event.
"I thought this was great. I
thought it was a good gesture to
all veterans," Todd Epperly of the
Delran VFW said. "It's something
I'm going to look forward to every
year now."
Councilwoman Patti Kolodi
and Councilman Mike Schwartz
organized the event.
The idea of celebrating veter-
ans in Delran came from
Schwartzs son during Riversides
Memorial Day parade, Schwartz
told The Sun.
Im blind and my son walked
with me in the parade, Schwartz
said. He asked me why Delran
doesnt do the same thing, and
thats basically what started the
conversation.
Veterans and currently serving
members came out to the ceremo-
ny and were recognized, and
thanked, for their bravery.
"Looking out on the world, we
see soldiers serving in more than
100 countries throughout the
world. The legacy of our veterans
inspires our American soldiers
today to answer to that duty,"
McElroy said. "I particularly
want to thank our Vietnam veter-
ans this evening. We served in a

war that deeply divided our na-
tion, but America is resilient and
the passage of time has healed
us."
McElroy spoke of his visit to
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
in Washington, D.C., and how the
black granite absorbs the warmth
of the sun.
"If the night is cool, you can see
a mist coming off the wall. For
me, it is as if the 58,272 names are
breathing life into my body,"
McElroy said. "My spirit is re-
newed."
McElroy continued serving fol-
lowing his return home through
volunteering and community
service, urging those in the crowd
to do the same, as the youth's "ser-
vices and talents are needed" at
local churches, schools and non-
profits.
"I'll never forget the one thing
Joe [McElroy] told young people,
he said that because of his serv-
ice to this country he earned the
right to vote," Kolodi said, chok-
ing back tears. "Mr. McElroy has
lived as a man of honor, dignity
and courage."
J.B. Grisson had just returned
home and attended the ceremony.
"You do this because it's in you
to serve. You don't do it for the
recognition, but when you do, it's
a great feeling," Grisson said.
Grisson has been serving for 21
years as a chief petty officer on
the U.S.S. San Antonio.
Though he couldn't divulge cer-
tain information, catching terror-
ists is one of his favorite aspects
of the job.
"You get out and start a whole
new family with those in the mili-
tary," Thomas Polino said. "The
camaraderie between the branch-
es, no matter what you're in, is in-
credible. It's an honor for us."
"With your service, you have
taught us the true meaning of pa-
triotism, courage and bravery,"
Mayor Ken Paris said.

Elementary PTA to hold
craft fair on Dec. 7
The Delran Elementary PTA
will be holding its annual craft
fair on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Del-
ran Middle School from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. Vendors may sign up by ob-
taining a form on either of the el-

Montessori Academy
seeking toy donations
Montessori Academy Delran,
28 Conrow Road is collecting new
and unwrapped toys for young
children through pre-teens to 16
years of age, until Thursday, Dec.
5.
The Toys for Tots donation bin
is clearly marked with the Toys
for Tots logo and is conveniently
located just inside the main en-
trance foyer.
Toys for Tots is a nonprofit or-
ganization that provides toys to
low-income families throughout
Burlington County. Last year,
TFT/Mt-Laurel delivered toys to
11,000 children. Approximately
12,000 children have already been
placed on the list for this holiday
season.
The Christmas season will
soon be upon us and this is a won-
derful opportunity to bring joy to
children in need in our own local
community. We ask that if you
are able, you will please remem-
ber to add a child in need to your
Christmas list who may not oth-
erwise receive a gift.
Some ideas for preteens/teens
include: sporting equipment;
bags; balls; books; backpacks; cos-
metics; purses; watch/wallet gift
sets; bath gift sets; board games;
radio control cars/trucks; hand-
held electronics; skateboards/hel-
mets; curling irons; hair straight-
eners and hair dryers. TFT asks
that to refrain from donating any
toys resembling realistic-looking
weapons or any gifts with food.

ontroversy surrounds almost
every bill that is proposed at
the state government level. If
the actual effects of the bill dont come
in question, then the partisanship of
it, or the motivation behind it, are
often scrutinized.
But a bill that was proposed recently
by state Sen. Richard Codey doesnt fit
into that category, at least in the world
according to us.
Codeys bill would expand New Jer-
seys distracted driving law to include
drivers who are temporarily stopped
whether in a traffic jam, red light or
stop sign. Basically, it would ban all
use of a cell phone while a person is
seated in the drivers seat of a vehicle.
The bill would also require the written
drivers test to include questions on
distracted driving.
When explaining his position on the
bill, Codey referred to the states DUI
law: If youre at a red light and youre
drunk, youre DUI, he said.
Makes perfect sense to us. Drivers
can be distracted, and cause major ac-
cidents, even if they are temporarily
stopped. How many times have you
seen other drivers because youve
never done this, right? hurriedly ac-
celerate at a light after they realize,
when they look up from their phone,
that the light has turned green? Situa-
tions like this can cause accidents.
Opponents of the bill, if they can be
considered this, are saying that the
true motives behind the bill are ques-
tionable. Even Codey admitted to this,
at least partially, saying that the real
aim of the bill is to put New Jersey in
line with federal standards for the Dis-
tracted Driving Grant Program. Cur-
rently, the states law isnt in line with
these standards, so it doesnt qualify
for grants.
To that, we say: Who cares?
Who cares if the motive behind en-
hancing New Jerseys distracted driv-
ing law is to receive federal grant
money? That money would be put to
use to educate and discourage people
from driving distracted.
Its not Codeys fault, or the Legisla-
tures fault, that the federal govern-
ment requires certain standards to re-
ceive grant money. Since that money
will go to good use, we should do what
is necessary to get it.
The only thing that should matter
here is the safety of those on the road,
and this bill enhances that safety.
Get off your phone!
Legislature should pass bill to ban phone usage for drivers

tracted driving laws? Is it enough?

Full-time special education teacher approved
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Sun
The already-crowded Millbridge Ele-
mentary School will be taking on a full-
time special education class, as required by
law.
The board of education approved a full-
time special education teacher for the self-
contained preschool class to begin on Dec.
1 for the class' Dec. 10 scheduled start date.
According to Jennifer Grenger, director
of student services, it's a desperate situa-
tion. The district was made aware of the
needs of the students in August. The dis-
trict then had 90 days to make a decision.
Grenger looked into other school dis-
tricts, including Mt. Laurel, Delanco and
Moorestown, and "all their full-time pre-
school is full," she said.
The prospect of accepting more stu-
dents, "makes her nervous," because the
district is legally required to provide the
education, and the number of special
needs students "is on the rise."
"The class will open with six students,
but the most it can be is eight students,"
Grenger said. "There will be a full-time
teacher and an instructional aide."
The PT/OT classroom that will be uti-
lized is the last classroom that doesn't have
children being educated in it.
"We needed a classroom with a bath-
room in it," Grenger said. "The PT/OT is
going into the health classroom and the
health teacher is going to actually go into
the classrooms."
The adjustment was a quick decision
made over the NJEA Conference, which
had school closed partially during the
week of Nov. 4.
"It's the least intrusive to students right
now. We're not moving physical classrooms
or actual students," Grenger said. "It's just
the adults, just the teachers."
According to Grenger, Millbridge is now
full with the addition of this classroom and
cannot physically accept more students.
Opening of the class was met with frus-
tration by Delran Education Association
President Mike Kaminski. The movement
of classrooms was sudden and most teach-

ers and staff were "unaware this
class is about to begin."
"I'm not questioning the merit
of the class itself, but the commu-
nication," Kaminski said during
the public comment portion of
the meeting. "It's not about bring-
ing the students back to the dis-
trict; it's about how this program
was communicated and being im-
plemented."
"Bottom line, this is a special
education compliance issue,"
Business Administrator Christo-
pher Russo said. "Millbridge was
the best answer. The calendar
sped up because of NJEA. It's a
compliance issue of kids aging
into school-age for preschool
were obligated to take them."
In other news:
The district will be adjusting
its nepotism policy. The change
was introduced on first reading.
According to board member
Diane Zierler, the way the policy
read before is that no relative will
be hired in the school district be-
fore the board member resigns.
"A majority of the board made
a recommendation to make a
change that a board member
would have to resign six months
before a relative could be em-
ployed by the district," Zierler
said. "The policy applies to board
members. The board member
would have to be off the board for
six months before a family mem-
ber could be employed at the dis-
trict."
Approximately $125,000 from
the maintenance reserve will be
moved to the general fund to as-
sist in the cost of replacing the
Millbridge heat exchanger. It will
leave $175,000 in the reserve,
Russo said.
The next board of education
meeting is scheduled for Dec. 9 at
7:30 p.m.

College offers training
in green technology
Burlington Countys commit-
ment to cost-saving renewable en-
ergy moved another step for-
ward, with Freeholder Director
Joe Donnelly reporting that
Burlington County College, using
state grant dollars, has trained
183 individuals, consisting of
both unemployed job seekers and
those presently employed, in
green energy technology.
Our workforce development
efforts are geared toward prepar-
ing our residents for new job op-
portunities in the ever-evolving
workplace, Donnelly said. The
college is to be commended for
recognizing that sustainable en-
ergy is a rapidly developing,
high-demand field, and for pro-
viding the resources to train
many individuals. I applaud the
college for securing the $385,000
in grant funds from the State En-
ergy Sector Partnership Council
that made this program a suc-
cess.
Sixty-four people who partici-
pated in the training program
were already employed by
Hutchinson Mechanical Servic-
es, a company that specializes in
HVAC installation and repair in
South Jersey.
This training, Donnelly said,
will enable them to secure and
advance their careers.
He said that 119 of the students
were unemployed, and of the 64
who responded to follow-up sur-
veys, 19 report they are now em-
ployed.
Donnelly said the county
and the college will continue to
work with the others to
secure employment, and noted
that the grant dollars are also
providing for job placement as-
sistance.
Burlington County College is
proud to partner with the county
and its agencies in training work-
ers for jobs that will be a vital
part of our economic future,
said Burlington County College
President David Hespe. Theres
no question that the demand for
sustainable energy will continue
to grow, and we must take
advantage of this important
trend.
Among the students who re-
sponded to the colleges survey
was Jim Keck of Hainesport.
He was unemployed for nearly
two years after a 28-year career in
construction. He stated the train-
ing provided up-to-date informa-
tion about energy efficiency
building, and gave him the confi-
dence he needed to regain em-
ployment as a construction su-
pervisor this summer.
It was one of the best things
that could have happened to me,
Keck said. Just taking that
course and realizing everything
upstairs was still strong and my
mind was still working. It just got
me going again.
Beyond the hands-on training
and instructional materials, par-
ticipants also had the opportuni-
ty to earn the industry-recog-
nized Building Performance In-
stitutes Residential Certifica-
tion.
BPI-certified professionals are
more in demand, because many
state-run efficiency and weather-
ization programs require BPI
credentials.
