JDM A17.2
1 Scope
JDM A17.2 specifies general requirements for unified inch series externally threaded fasteners, including: materials and mechanical properties, product marking, screw threads, dimensions and tolerances, finish and coatings, inspection and quality assurance, and packaging identification. JDM A17.2 applies to bolts, screws, studs A , and similar externally threaded parts with unified inch screw threads of nominal diameters 1.500 in and smaller. JDM A17.2 does not apply to: fasteners not under tensile stress, such as set screws fasteners which cut or form mating threads, such as: wood screws or lag screws; tapping screws; thread cutting, thread forming, or thread rolling screws; or self drilling screws heavy hex bolts and screws, or heavy hex structural bolts JDM A17.2 does not specify requirements for: weldability. corrosion resistance in service environments. ability to withstand temperatures above +500F (+260C) or below -60F (-50C) resistance to shear stress fatigue resistance.
Designations
2.1 Carbon & Alloy Steels. Carbon and alloy steel material and strength grades are designated by
the JDM number shown in Table 1. Table 1 cross-references the JDM number to the applicable SAE J429 grade.
2.2 Stainless Steels. The alloy group and condition should be designated according to ASTM F593 except for socket head products, ASTM F837 for socket head cap screws, or ASTM F879 for socket button and flat countersunk head cap screws. 2.3 Non-Ferrous Metals. The alloy number should be designated according to ASTM F468.
General Requirements
General requirements not otherwise specified shall be as specified by the standards for materials and mechanical properties.
4.1 Carbon & Alloy Steel. The material, treatment, mechanical properties, required tests, and test
methods shall be as specified in the standards indicated in Table 2. Where more than one standard applies, the choice is at the option of the supplier.
The term stud" in this standard applies to a cylindrical rod of moderate length, threaded on either one or both ends or throughout its entire length, and either straight or bent (including U-bolts, etc). It does not apply to headed, collared, or similar products more closely characterized as bolts.

For bolts and screws of diameters >.750 (3/4) in or lengths >6.00 in, JDM A17A requirements apply. Composition specified for ASTM A449 Type 2 may be substituted, provided that the SAE J429 Grade 8.2 minimum tempering temperature, hardness, and mechanical properties are maintained. C Unless otherwise specified for studs, when JDM A17D is ordered, JDM A17F may be substituted at the option of the supplier. D All ASTM A574 requirements except dimensions and surface discontinuities shall apply for other than socket head screws. Tensile strength and proof load for bolts and screws of .5625 (9/16) nominal diameter, which are not covered in ASTM A574, shall be: Tensile Strength, lb Proof Load, lb Coarse Thread (9/16-12 UNRC-3A) 32 800 25 500 Fine Thread (9/16-18 UNRF-3A) 36 500 28 400

4.2 Stainless Steel. The material, treatment, mechanical properties and tests shall be as specified in:
ASTM F593 (with supplementary requirements S7 manufacturers identification and S8 material identification), except for socket head products. ASTM F837 for socket head cap screws. ASTM F879 for socket button and flat countersunk head cap screws.
4.3 Non-Ferrous Metal. The material, treatment, mechanical properties and tests shall be as specified
in ASTM F468 (with supplementary requirement S4 individual fastener marking).
Product Marking B
Except as follows, all socket head screws and JDM A17G flange 12-point cap screws shall be marked to identify the source (manufacturer or private label distributor), and all other bolts, screws, and studs shall be marked to identify both the grade and the source. Except for JDM A17G, the grade mark shall be the symbol specified by the standard for material and mechanical properties. For JDM A17G, the grade mark shall be the number 180. Unless otherwise specified, the following products may or may not be marked: Slotted or recessed head screws (of any size). Bolts and screws of nominal thread diameters smaller than .250 (1/4) in. Studs of nominal thread diameters smaller than .375 (3/8) in. Studs of copper, copper base alloys, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys.
5.1 Bolts & Screws. The markings shall be raised or depressed on the top of the head, or raised on the top of the flange, or, for socket head products, raised or depressed on the top or side of the head. 5.2 Studs. The markings shall be raised or depressed on the extreme end of the threaded portion. Studs with the same threads on both ends may be marked on either end or both ends. For studs with interference-fit threads, the grade mark shall be on the nut end. For studs with both coarse and fine threads, the grade mark shall be on the coarse thread end.
Screw Threads
Unless otherwise specified, the screw threads shall be Unified coarse series according to ASME B1.1 as follows. UNC or UNRC Class 2A for all except socket head products and JDM A17G products. UNRC Class 3A for socket head products and JDM A17G products of nominal thread sizes 1 in. UNRC Class 2A for socket head products and JDM A17G products of nominal thread sizes > 1 in. Unless otherwise specified, gaging for dimensional acceptability of screw threads shall be based on ASME B1.3M: System 21 for all except socket head products and JDM A17G products. System 22 for socket head products and JDM A17G products.
Dimensions and tolerances not otherwise specified shall conform to the relevant ASME standard.

JDM A17.2
Surface Discontinuities
Unless otherwise specified, the limits for surface discontinuities shall be as specified in one of the following standards. Where more than one standard applies, the choice is at the option of the supplier. JDM A17D & JDM A17F ASTM F788/F788M for diameters .250 (1/4) in. SAE J1061 for diameters 1.000 in with length 6 in.
