HSA busy
planning
fundraising
events
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Twenty degree temperatures,
weekly snowstorms and grocery
stores being pillaged for their
milk and eggs has not kept the In-
dian Mills Home and School As-
sociation from staying busy in
planning ways to raise money for
the Shamong School District.
Were a fundraising organiza-
tion that tries to purchase the
items that arent in the schools
budget, HSA president Barbara
Weir said. When there have been
curriculum changes in the past,
weve been able to step in and
purchase things teachers need
when the budget doesnt have
room to allow it.
This past year, the HSA pur-
chased a variety of items for the
district ranging from new paint
to an iPad for classroom use. The
ability to be able to provide any-
thing depends on the associa-
tions ability to raise funds
through various events.
We host a lot of family friend-
ly events. We hosted a Halloween
party that was open to students

Jazz and Blues
set for Feb. 15
On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Jazz
and Blues Showcase returns fea-
turing a quintet of noted New
Jersey jazz artists. It's co-led by
trombonist Clifford Adams, a
long-standing member of Kool
and the Gang, and saxophonist
Tommy Gryce, brother of jazz leg-
end Gigi Gryce. The veteran
jazzmen completing the ensemble
are guitarist Bob Smith, organist
Tom Pass and drummer Joe
Brown. The show will take place
from 7:30-10 p.m. at Protestant
Community Church, 100 Stokes
Road, Medford Lakes. Tickets are
$20 or $15 for students and sen-
iors. Refreshments are included.
For more information, call (609)

Annual Jazz Festival
scheduled for Feb. 13
The Seneca Eagles Band Par-
ents Association invites you to at-
tend the annual Jazz Festival to
be held on Thursday, Feb. 13 at the
Seneca High School auditorium
from 4 to 9 p.m. Enjoy an evening
of wonderful music performed by
10 local area middle and high
school jazz ensembles. Admission
is $8 for adults and students, $5
for seniors 65-plus. Refreshments
and merchandise will also be
available for purchase.
OBITUARIES
The Sun will print obituaries, free of charge.
BRIEFS
and their entire family. We hosted
a soccer tournament in December
that allowed people of any skill
level to join and have a good
time, Weir said. The Harlem
Wizards will do a show for us in
May, which is exciting.
Keeping in the theme of fami-
ly friendly, the HSA is hosting a
Sweetheart Dance on Friday,
Feb. 7 at the Indian Mills School.
Fathers and daughters as well as
mothers and sons from the
schools first through fourth
grades are invited for a night of
dancing and refreshments.
Though the recent weather has
few thinking about golf, HSA
member Karen Sheairs is actively
planning the groups eighth annu-
al golf outing, which will be held
April 28 at Little Mill Country
Club in Marlton. Donations are
being accepted for basket raffles
and a silent auction.
Its one of our biggest
fundraisers of the year, Sheairs
said. Unfortunately, we werent
able to have it last year, but were
looking forward to it this year. Its
been a great event for us, typical-
ly raising thousands of dollars
for the schools.
Teachers put together a list of
requests for the HSA before the
school year and present it to the
group. The association then
meets to decide what requests it
will be able to grant. The relation-
ship with the districts teachers is
one the HSA values.
Its a cool relationship. They
thank us in person, give us thank
you cards. Were just happy to be
able to help them, Weir said.
The benefits of its generosity
are felt beyond just the teachers.
Students and parents also reach
out to the HSA and thank them
for providing what they do.
Its a very cyclical relation-
ship. The things we provide go to
the teachers, but they ultimately
are helping the students, which
make them happy. If the students
are happy then the parents are
happy and on down the line,
Weir said. Its great to see the
money we raise and the items we
purchase go right back to the kids
and the support of their educa-
tion.

The Shamong Board of Education used
its monthly meeting to focus on personnel
matters, including approval of leaves of
absence, appointments, volunteers and the
hiring of teachers and substitutes.
The board also granted approval to edu-
cators and administrators to attend vari-
ous conferences and for community
groups to utilize school facilities.
Jackie Johnson and SheriLyn Perkins
were approved as volunteers to help teach-
ers during the school year. The volunteers
are separate from the districts teachers
aides, who are paid for their work.
In other news:
The board approved a resolution to
renew membership in the Burlington
County Insurance Pool for the three-year
membership term commencing on July 1.
In March, students will take part in a
field test of the Partnership for Assess-
ment of Readiness for College and Careers
that will replace the current NJ ASK for
the 2014-2015 school year. The assessment
will be conducted online and is interactive
for students and teachers. PARCC received
a $186 million grant through the U.S. De-
partment of Education to support the de-
velopment and design of the next-genera-
tion assessment system.
The Shamong Foundation For Edu-
cational Excellence announced the eighth
annual Beat the Winter Blues Comedy
Night. The event will take place March 7
at Lucien's Manor in Berlin from 7 p.m. to
midnight.
Its asking residents to please join and
support the efforts of the foundation for
the benefit and enrichment of the Sha-
mong School District. The event will in-
clude a performance by three comedians,
cash bar, dinner, basket raffles, live auction
and dancing. Tickets are $60 each. Please
contact Deb Dupnik at debdupnik@com-
cast.net for ticket information or to donate
items for basket raffles and live auction.
Schools will be closed Friday, Feb. 14
for a teacher in-service day and Monday,

S
chool budgets are on the horizon
statewide. There once was a
time when residents had a di-
rect way to give their input to the
budget, by voting yay or nay for
its passage. That opportunity has, for
the most part, been removed in our
state, but it doesnt mean you cant,
and shouldnt, be involved in the
process.
The toughest job in New Jersey
right now? School board member has
to be at or near the top of the list.
Whether you support Gov. Christies
approach to budgeting, school board
members have had a tough time deal-
ing with a reduction in state aid over
the last few years.
The vast majority of board mem-
bers dont want to raise taxes and/or
cut services. But, sometimes, there is
no other option.
Pretty much across the state, school
districts will be doing less with less.
But did your board cut enough from
the budget? Too much? Do you agree
with the tax rate? Do you think it
should have been higher to provide
more services? What are your ideas
for cutting expenses and raising rev-
enues?
Whatever the budget situation
proves to be this year, what needs to
happen between now and next year to
make things better?
We invite you to write letters to the
editor to share your thoughts with the
rest of the community. If you support
the budget, if you oppose it, if you
have ideas that could bring additional
revenue into your school district or
help to cut costs, now is the time to
share them.
Between now and when the school
budget is passed, be involved as much
as you can. Attend school board meet-
ings and express your thoughts.
Youll be sending a message to your
board of education regarding what
you would like to see take place in fu-
ture years years that promise to be
difficult yet again.
Get involved
School budget talks are about to begin
Your thoughts
Throughout the school budget season,
please share your thoughts with the
community through a letter to the editor
in our paper.
