ABOUT OURSELVES

The National Book Trust, India (NBT) an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Human
Resource Development, Government of India, is a professional body working towards promotion
of books and the habit of reading. Established in 1957, the NBT celebrated its Golden Jubilee in
2007. The Trust has now moved to its new building named Nehru Bhawan in Vasant Kunj
Institutional Area. The complex is spread over an area of one hectare and comprises the Office
Block, the Permanent Display Block and a separate Stores/Housing Block. The plot is trapezoidal
with a large depression in the centre of the site to create a stepped amphitheatre effect. This is
surrounded by four-storey semi-circular Office Block which has a Writer‘s Home.
The activities of the Trust can be divided under five broad heads. These are (i) publishing, (ii)
promotion of books and reading, (iii) promotion of Indian books abroad, (iv) assistance to authors
and publishers, and (v) promotion of children‘s literature. They are described below.

Publishing
We publish general reading material for all segments of society and for all age-groups, including
books for children and post-literacy reading material for neo-literates. Moderately priced books,
fiction and non-fiction in English, Hindi and seventeen other major Indian languages, are brought
out under our different series. The languages covered are Asamiya, Bangla, Gujarati, Kannada,
Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Sindhi,
Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. In addition, on an experimental basis, select titles for children have been
translated into Santhali and North-Eastern languages, such as Ao Naga, Bhutia, Boro, Garo,
Khasi, Kokborok, Lepcha, Limboo, Mising, Mizo and Newari.
We pay special attention to those genres of publishing which, despite their importance, have
not been adequately covered in India, such as popular science, technology, environment, and the
land and people of India designed for the general reader.
We have been quite successful in our endeavour to provide a balanced set of books in every
language, by stepping up the production of original titles, translations and revised editions in
various languages. We have so far published approximately 17,000 titles. Moreover, by following
an innovative and flexible policy with regard to the marketing of books, we are well on the way to
establishing an effective sales network for our publications with the objective of making them
financially viable and easily accessible.

Promotion of Books and Reading

We play an important role in promoting books and the habit of reading by organising book fairs
and exhibitions throughout the country. We have also started putting up language-wise and
genre-wise exhibitions of select, moderately priced books brought out by publishers from the
private and public sectors. These include exhibitions of post-literacy reading material, which are
held in the villages. Since September 1992, when the scheme of mobile exhibitions was
introduced, we have organised more than 8,000 exhibitions across all the states in the country
including north-eastern states.
We organise the New Delhi World Book Fair, which is the most professional of the book fairs
held in the country, and the largest book fair in Asia and Africa. It attracts hundreds of exhibitors,
both Indian as well as foreign. The World Book Fair is organised every alternate year. The first
New Delhi World Book Fair was organised in 1972. The 18th Fair was held from 2-10 February
2008 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, where Russia was the Guest of Honour country. The special
feature of the Fair was the Gandhi Pavilion which was organised to commemorate the 60th
anniversary of the martyrdom of the Father of the Nation. On this occasion, An Annotated Rights
Catalogue ‗In Words and In Deeds‘ was also released. With over 1,300 participants, including 37
from 19 overseas countries, the Fair was spread over an area of 36,000 sq.m. The 19th World
Book Fair will be held from 30 January–7 February 2010 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Besides organising book fairs at the regional and rural levels, we also hold a National Book Fair
every year. Till now we have organised 31 National Book Fairs, which include places such as
Ahmedabad, Indore, Kolkata, Chennai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Nagpur, New
Delhi, Patna, Bangalore, Bhopal, Mumbai, Lucknow and Hyderabad. We have also organised
over 15 Children‘s Book Fairs in more than 30 cities of the country. Programmes like ‗Meet the
Author Sessions‘ and other literary activities are major attractions of these fairs which impart a
festive colour to the occasion. Besides this, we have organised over 58 regional book fairs across
the country. We also organise seminars and workshops for people associated with book
production, creation and its sale and purchase.
Every year from 14 to 20 November, at our initiative, National Book Week is celebrated all
over the country by educational and other institutions, and literary and publishing organisations,
through book-related programmes and book exhibitions. Owing to the extensive direct mailing of
promotional material and the generous support we have been getting from the electronic and print
media, we have been able to disseminate this concept countrywide. During the week, a number
of seminars, workshops, book exhibitions and activities for and by children are organised
throughout the country.
NBT has taken upon itself the responsibility to make India a society of readers. To achieve
this, the Trust has started a wide ranging awareness programmes across the country.

Publishing Course
We also conduct one month introductory course in publishing to attract young talents. Since 1996
we have organised eleven such courses in New Delhi. Courses have also been organised at
Panaji, Kanpur, Nashik, Aligarh, Agartala, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Aizawl and
Thiruvananthapuram.

NBT Book Club

The Trust also has a scheme of NBT Book Club. The members of this Club can avail a special
discount on purchase of NBT books and also a discount on postal charges on the receipt of
books through VPP. The life membership fee for the Club is only Rs. 50 for an individual.
Besides, all members are also entitled to receive monthly Hindi and English newsletters of the
Trust, which keep them abreast of its activities.

Promotion of Indian Books Abroad

To promote Indian publications abroad, we participate in international book fairs and put up
exhibitions to display select titles brought out by various Indian publishers. Since 1970, we have
participated in more than 350 international book fairs. We participate regularly in fairs organised
at Frankfurt, Bologna, Zimbabwe, Beijing, Colombo, Tokyo, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore,
Manila, Karachi, etc.
It was a matter of great honour for India to be chosen as the Guest Country at the Frankfurt Book
Fair 2006. The Frankfurt Book Fair is the largest international book fair in the world, held annually
in Frankfurt, Germany. It provides a global platform for showcasing a country‘s strength in the
field of book promoting academic excellence, and technologies of knowledge dissemination.
Every year one country is selected by the Frankfurt Fair Authority as the Guest of Honour. India is
the only country to have been awarded the distinction of being the Guest Country twice—first in
1986 and again in 2006.

Assistance to Authors and Publishers

To promote the publication of reasonably priced books for higher education, we give financial
assistance to authors and publishers of textbooks and reference material. Under our scheme for
the subsidised publication of books, only such books are subsidised for which a definite need is
felt and which relate to subject areas where books of an acceptable standard are either not
available or are so expensive as to be beyond the means of the students. So far, we have
subsidised the publication of about 934 titles, mostly in English. It has, therefore, been decided to
be extremely selective about accepting titles in English, and to encourage the publishers of Indian
languages to derive the maximum benefit out of the scheme. In addition, the scope of the scheme

has been widened to provide assistance for the publications, in Indian languages, of thought-
provoking works of non-fiction, including dictionaries and encyclopaedias, etc.

Promotion of Children’s Literature

The National Centre for Children‘s Literature (NCCL) was established in 1993 by the Trust to
monitor, coordinate, plan and aid the publication of children‘s literature in various Indian
languages. Besides developing a library-cum-documentation centre of children‘s literature, the
Centre is engaged in organising workshops and exhibitions, and promoting the habit of reading at
the school level by encouraging the setting up of Readers‘ Clubs. The Centre also takes up
research and intends to publish a journal on children‘s literature.

OUR PUBLISHING PROGRAMME

We bring out books under some well-defined series which are described below :

India—The Land and the People

Books of this series introduce the varied physical environment, the diverse cultural traditions and
the flora and fauna which have enriched the composite and colourful character of India. These
books, written in a non-technical, lucid style by subject experts, provide authentic and up-to-date
information to readers who may not be familiar with the subject.

Young India Library

The main objective of publishing books under the Young India Library series for young readers of
the 18± age-group is to introduce the social, economic and political concepts, issues and choices
which will confront them in the years to come. Stories of adventure and travel, and books on
career opportunities are also included in this series.

Popular Science
This series aims at enabling the average educated reader to understand the world around
him/her, appreciate the progress of science, and learn about the role science and technology play
in everyday life, emphasising, wherever possible, India‘s contribution to the field. The books in
this series are written in a lucid, easy-to-understand, simple style, and illustrated with anecdotes
and analogies from daily life. Diagrams, sketches and photographs further elucidate the text.

Popular Social Science

The books under this series introduce popular concepts and ideas of social sciences to the
general reader. A variety of emerging subject areas like gender studies, tribal studies, peace and
conflict studies, development economics, social formation, etc. are the major focus of
the series. These subject areas have generally remained in the domain of academic discussion
and hence there is a felt need to introduce these ideas to the general reader in non-academic and
concise monographs.

Folklore
Initially the objective of the Folklore series was to enable the readers of one region to get
acquainted with the folklore which had shaped the cultural identity of those living in other regions
of the country. Descriptions of the area, people, myths, mythology, religion, customs, traditions,
fairs and festivals, music, dance, drama, arts and crafts, and folk literature were also included in
the books of this series. It has now been decided to move away from the rigid format and present
folklore, including folklore under creation, as a living entity. The basic idea is to have an attractive
format, with narrative illustrated by visuals.

National Biography
The objective of the National Biography series is to bring out biographies of Indian women and
men who have made outstanding contribution towards the development of Indian society, culture,
science, economy, polity as also a modern Indian sensibility. These provide an authentic,
objective, comprehensive and analytic account of the person‘s life and times.

Autobiography
This newly launched series comprises autobiographies of distinguished social, political and
literary figures of India, whose contributions have made the country proud.

Nehru Bal Pustakalaya

The Nehru Bal Pustakalaya series aims at creating a treasure-house of enjoyable and
informative literature which children can read at their own initiative. It also promotes national

*Price may be changed without notice Page 4

integration by providing common reading material on a wide range of subjects in their mother
tongue to children all over India.
Books in this series cater to four age-groups, namely pre-school, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14.
Illustrative material for these books is commissioned separately and all books carry colour and/or
black and white illustrations, line drawings and photographs. In the case of books for pre-school
children, the text, if any, revolves around multi-coloured pictures which tell a story by themselves.

Asian/Pacific Co-publication Programme

This is a novel attempt under the aegis of UNESCO, at developing books for Asian children by
Asian authors. To have children in Korea share their fantasies with their counterparts in Sri Lanka
is probably no small achievement. And when Indian and Pakistani editors work as part of a team
to build a list for children in the 20 odd countries of the continent we inhabit, it‘s a great new
beginning. The many worlds from Tehran to Tokyo intermingle to give colour to words that
children across the continent, if not the world, would love to read. These books are steps for
bridging minds and creating a common heritage for this vast continent and are the very best of
Asia today.

Creative Learning Series

The objective of this series is to bring out books on new educational concepts and tools that are
now being actively implemented in the pre-primary and primary sectors of education. With an
orientation towards a practical mode of approach, these books are specially designed keeping in
view the needs of teachers and others working in the field of education.

Books for Neo-literates

Most books published under this series are the outcome of workshops organised in rural areas
with participation of the local people. Titles are also assigned to authors/experts and suitable
books adapted and abridged. To make the books relevant to the needs of neo-literates, the books
are written in an idiom familiar to them and are field tested. These are also extensively illustrated.
Short stories, biographies, novelettes, folktales, presentations of contemporary issues and
functionally useful information are brought out in a style which attracts neo-literates to read at
their own initiative.

Continuing Education Series

The objective of this series is to bring out books for the participants of Continuing Education
Programme in all major languages of India. Books in this series include collections of freedom
songs, books on Indian culture, polity, industry, agriculture, etc. Besides, the series also
comprises biographies and major novels of Indian literature abridged for target readership.

Aadan Pradan
Aadan Pradan is a series of particular importance because of its unique potential for forging
national integration through the exchange of creative literature of the different regions. It presents
well-known literary works, mainly novels and short stories, of a particular language, to people of
other Indian languages. Since only contemporary works are published under the Aadan Pradan
series, we bring out Indian classical literature under another series, titled Classics.

World Literature
Anthologies of contemporary writing from the Asian, African and Latin American countries are
published in this series.

Indian Diaspora Studies

The books under this series focus on the works of and about the Indian diasporic community as
settled across globe. The studies seek to bring out the salient features of the impact of cross-
cultural interaction, alienation and exile, displacement, immigration, etc. on various knowledge
systems like literature, sociology, culture, philosophy, etc. Emerging as a significant field of study,
NBT‘s foray into this area of publishing is a pioneering effort.

Afro-Asian Countries
In the post-colonial world, countries of Asia and Africa have emerged as powerful cultural, social,
political and economic forces thereby becoming a significant field of study due to similarity of
concerns. The books under the series focus on the problems and prospects of sustainable
development, globalisation and interdependence in the fields of science and technology, trade,
agriculture, infrastructure, education, health, strategic alliances, etc. in these geo-political regions.

General Series
Significant titles which cannot be covered under the above series are published under General
series.

Braille Books
The Trust has been bringing out select titles from its various series in Braille.

Golden Jubilee Anthologies

The Trust has also brought out select anthologies in different Indian languages to mark its Golden
Jubilee Year. The anthologies aim to bring to the readers some of the best post-independence
writings, so that readers of one language can enjoy and appreciate literature of other languages.
