NBT English Catalogue 08
The National Book Trust, India (NBT) an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Human
Resource Development, Government of India, is a professional body working towards promotion
of books and the habit of reading. Established in 1957, the NBT celebrated its Golden Jubilee in
2007. The Trust has now moved to its new building named Nehru Bhawan in Vasant Kunj
Institutional Area. The complex is spread over an area of one hectare and comprises the Office
Block, the Permanent Display Block and a separate Stores/Housing Block. The plot is trapezoidal
with a large depression in the centre of the site to create a stepped amphitheatre effect. This is
surrounded by four-storey semi-circular Office Block which has a Writer‘s Home.
The activities of the Trust can be divided under five broad heads. These are (i) publishing, (ii)
promotion of books and reading, (iii) promotion of Indian books abroad, (iv) assistance to authors
and publishers, and (v) promotion of children‘s literature. They are described below.
Publishing
We publish general reading material for all segments of society and for all age-groups, including
books for children and post-literacy reading material for neo-literates. Moderately priced books,
fiction and non-fiction in English, Hindi and seventeen other major Indian languages, are brought
out under our different series. The languages covered are Asamiya, Bangla, Gujarati, Kannada,
Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Sindhi,
Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. In addition, on an experimental basis, select titles for children have been
translated into Santhali and North-Eastern languages, such as Ao Naga, Bhutia, Boro, Garo,
Khasi, Kokborok, Lepcha, Limboo, Mising, Mizo and Newari.
We pay special attention to those genres of publishing which, despite their importance, have
not been adequately covered in India, such as popular science, technology, environment, and the
land and people of India designed for the general reader.
We have been quite successful in our endeavour to provide a balanced set of books in every
language, by stepping up the production of original titles, translations and revised editions in
various languages. We have so far published approximately 17,000 titles. Moreover, by following
an innovative and flexible policy with regard to the marketing of books, we are well on the way to
establishing an effective sales network for our publications with the objective of making them
financially viable and easily accessible.
Book Festivals
Publishing Course
We also conduct one month introductory course in publishing to attract young talents. Since 1996
we have organised eleven such courses in New Delhi. Courses have also been organised at
Panaji, Kanpur, Nashik, Aligarh, Agartala, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Aizawl and
Thiruvananthapuram.
We bring out books under some well-defined series which are described below :
Popular Science
This series aims at enabling the average educated reader to understand the world around
him/her, appreciate the progress of science, and learn about the role science and technology play
in everyday life, emphasising, wherever possible, India‘s contribution to the field. The books in
this series are written in a lucid, easy-to-understand, simple style, and illustrated with anecdotes
and analogies from daily life. Diagrams, sketches and photographs further elucidate the text.
Folklore
Initially the objective of the Folklore series was to enable the readers of one region to get
acquainted with the folklore which had shaped the cultural identity of those living in other regions
of the country. Descriptions of the area, people, myths, mythology, religion, customs, traditions,
fairs and festivals, music, dance, drama, arts and crafts, and folk literature were also included in
the books of this series. It has now been decided to move away from the rigid format and present
folklore, including folklore under creation, as a living entity. The basic idea is to have an attractive
format, with narrative illustrated by visuals.
National Biography
The objective of the National Biography series is to bring out biographies of Indian women and
men who have made outstanding contribution towards the development of Indian society, culture,
science, economy, polity as also a modern Indian sensibility. These provide an authentic,
objective, comprehensive and analytic account of the person‘s life and times.
Autobiography
This newly launched series comprises autobiographies of distinguished social, political and
literary figures of India, whose contributions have made the country proud.
Aadan Pradan
Aadan Pradan is a series of particular importance because of its unique potential for forging
national integration through the exchange of creative literature of the different regions. It presents
well-known literary works, mainly novels and short stories, of a particular language, to people of
other Indian languages. Since only contemporary works are published under the Aadan Pradan
series, we bring out Indian classical literature under another series, titled Classics.
World Literature
Anthologies of contemporary writing from the Asian, African and Latin American countries are
published in this series.
General Series
Significant titles which cannot be covered under the above series are published under General
series.
Braille Books
