> Recovery Manager outperforms RMAN Backups 80% faster than RMAN 10g (without compression) Backups 400% faster than RMAN 10g (with compression) Restores 258% faster than RMAN 10g (from compressed backup) Compression saves money (RMANs compression is unusable) > RMAN may be free, but the considerable time and cost involved in its implementation are not. > RMAN 10g is not compatible with previous versions of Oracle. 9i and earlier Oracle instances require a different backup strategy from 10g instances. BMC Recovery Manager is the only database backup and recovery solution that covers all major database platforms, including all versions of Oracle. > RMAN offers compression for 10g databases only. BMC Recovery Manager offers compression for Oracle versions 7.3.4 through 10g. Compression means substantial cost savings on disk space and network bandwidth. Even though Oracle has compression with 10g it causes very poor performance for backup and restore. > RMANs lack of reporting capabilities can hinder compliance efforts. With BMC Recovery Manager you can prove that backups occur, schedule their occurrence, perform dry-run tests and achieve compliance. > RMAN does not have automated archive log management. With RMAN, you must write your own scripts to manage an archive log destination which is difficult and time consuming. BMC Recovery Manager helps you minimize downtime by automating this recovery process. > RMAN cannot encrypt backup, leaving customers vulnerable to security faults and public relation nightmares. BMC Recovery Manager can encrypt backups. Security is only as strong as its weakest link. With RMAN, the weakest link could be the customers backup tapes. > Out of the box, Oracle can backup only to disk. To backup to a storage manager, RMAN depends on third-party, non-native

Product "Sweet Spot" Company/Solution Overview

For the last 30 years Oracle has been providing relational databases and is installed in the data centers of 98 of the Fortune 100. Recently, Oracle has been releasing more and more products that compete with BMC in areas such as identity management, application performance management and change and configuration. They have also made comments about taking on BMC and others in the BSM space. While Oracle is a large company with many resources, its technology is only able to work within Oracle technology stacks relegating their solutions to a smaller customer base. While Oracles, database solutions are very well respected and are considered by many customers an industry standard, they are no match to the breadth of BMCs BSM solutions. > Flash Recovery Area provides a unified storage location for all recovery-related files. > Automatic Storage Management provides automatic management of data without requiring OS administration. > Change Tracking File improves the performance of incremental backups. > Incrementally Updated Backups allow a user to do incremental backups without the performance hit on recovery. > Compression of Backups. > Automated Tablespace Point in Time Recovery. > Automatic channel failover on backup or restore.

APIs. This can create performance issues and even cause the entire Oracle instance to stop unexpectedly. > RMAN cannot communicate directly with third-party storage managers and must abstract an interface between the generic half of RMAN and the actual tape drives upon which backups ultimately reside. This leaves the media management vendors responsible for keeping their products up to date with each version and patch level of RMAN. This raises TCO. > BMC Recovery Manager allows a DBA to use the backup and recovery utility to easily create duplicate databases. While RMAN offers multiple options for using the backup and recovery utility to create and duplicate databases, it is not an automated process so the DBAs time is not used efficiently. BMC Recovery Manager automates the entire process of sending backup data to a remote system enabling DBAs to focus time on other important tasks.

storage manager modules, which can be substantial given the cost of not only the course, but lodging and travel > For ROI comparisons between BMC Recovery Manager and RMAN, please reference SQL-BackTrack and RMAN: A Comparison of ROI Impact and Functionality.

Dry run recovery to easily test recoverability with no impact to production databases. Cloning to make multiple copies of a database from a backup. Archive log monitoring and management. Better Performance Fast and efficient backups. We have seen backups up to 10 times faster than native utilities. Fast and efficient compression. More Automation Automation of database cloning to easily create and refresh test and development databases.

Objection Handling
OBJECTION: BMC Recovery Manger is expensive while Oracle RMAN is free. RESPONSE: Oracle RMAN requires more hardware, software, training, education, professional services and storage module license costs that are expensive. RMAN is not free at all and has a higher TCO and lower ROI compared to BMC Recovery Manager. OBJECTION: For 30 years Oracle has been the gold standard for database technology and applications in enterprises throughout the world. Who better than Oracle to manage our databases? RESPONSE: BMC has been a leader in database backup and recovery and has been backing up and recovering Oracle databases for much longer than Oracle. Prior to Oracle v.9i, their backup product was buggy and not used in production environments. Beginning with 9i, Oracle has been trying to catch up to Recovery Manager but they are still far behind. BMC is clearly the leader in Enterprise backup and recovery. OBJECTION: For 6 years in a row, Oracle was voted the Best Database Management System by Intelligent Enterprise readers and has earned numerous other awards. RESPONSE: Oracle is a great database and provides many tools for managing the database. BMC Recovery Manager offers advanced backup and recovery features not provided by Oracle that reduce the cost of backups and minimize downtime in the event of an outage. OBJECTION: Oracle claims that you must use RMAN to backup databases on ASM. RESPONSE: Not true. Recovery Manager supports databases on ASM. We still offer the same ease of recovery regardless of whether the database is on ASM or traditional file systems.

Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

> The most significant reason customers continue to invest in BMC Recovery Manager is that it offers a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than RMAN. The main cost drivers to examine when evaluating cost of ownership of BMC Recovery Manager versus RMAN are: Cost of implementation License costs for media extensions Training costs Disk space cost and efficiencies Cost of inconsistent processes and tools Architectural costs > To implement RMAN is a time consuming and labor-intensive task. In a sample environment of 50 servers (214 instances), it is estimated to take a full year to convert to RMAN. This includes writing the RMAN scripts, linking the libraries, loading the software, testing, etc. > Older Oracle versions are not going away due to third-party applications. > Each RMAN Server requires additional software and licensing Storage Manager modules (Tivoli, Veritas, etc.) is very expensive. > RMAN is a much more complex tool and typically requires a fair amount of education services to get DBAs acquainted with its components and operation. Each DBA in an RMAN environment will likely require Oracle RMAN training as well as training on the

Automation of Object-level recovery. Manageability Centralized monitoring for an entire backup and recovery environment. Alerting via email notification or PATROL. Can also integrate with other corporate monitoring systems. Policy-based management to help proactively manage SLAs and compliance requirements. Integration with Storage Managers Direct Integration with Tivoli Storage Manager, Veritas Netbackup and EMC Networker for all database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server. The integration is done with two methods. Direct integration allows database backups to be written and restored directly from the Netbackup without human intervention. Our staged approach first writes backups to disk and then later copies or moves the backup images to Veritas Netbackup giving our customers the flexibility to keep higher priority backups on disk for fastest backup and recovery times. Security Provides encryption which secures backups for long-term retention. Standard look and feel across environments BMC also provides one standard look and feel for heterogeneous environments so there is no learning curve when moving from one database type to another. We make it very easy for anyone to manage backup and recovery. It does not require a recovery expert to perform hundreds of different recovery scenarios. Message by Target Audience > IT Manager Allows non-DBAs to perform critical database backup and recoveries Cross-team members can provide backup and recovery support Provides seamless integration between all parts of your organization (database administration, storage administration, system administration) Significant return on investment based on capital and labor savings > DBA Manager Better use of resources Facilitates cross-platform duties by DBAs

Maximizes database uptime in the event of a failure > DBA Eliminates the need to become a backup and recovery expert Provides the flexible and fast backup and recovery options needed in a complex environment Can make you look like an expert and the company hero > Executive Significant ROI based upon capital and labor savings (hard $$) as well as maximum business uptime (soft $$) Counter Points for Oracle RMAN Enhancements If Oracle is touting the enhancements made to Oracle RMAN listed below, use the weaknesses listed to counter their argument and be sure to utilize the Silver Bullets Against RMAN presentation. > Flash Recovery Area provides a unified storage location for all recovery-related files. Weaknesses Requires disk space a recommended 3 times the size of the database Requires DBAs to relinquish control of the location of log and control files Single point of failure in that all files are sitting on the same disk so another backup will still have to occur to backup the files from disk to another media > Automatic Storage Management provides automatic management of data without requiring OS administration. Weaknesses Does not support normal file operations DBAs must relinquish all control over the actual data files Limited to available utilities > Change Tracking File improves the performance of incremental backups. Weaknesses Only supports Oracle 10g and nothing older Blocks are tracked by scanning redo logs which can have an affect on database performance > Incrementally Updated Backups allow a user to do incremental backups without the performance hit on recovery. Weaknesses Must have space on disk to restore the full backups and the incrementals This will replace the original full backup in the RMAN history which can reduce the recovery window

> Compression of Backups. Weaknesses Performance is terrible; a compressed RMAN backup is up to 2-3 times slower than a non-compressed RMAN backup Support is available for Oracle 10g only. > Automated Tablespace PIT Recovery and automatic channel failover on backup or restore Weaknesses Do not anticipate full automation with Oracle Still not at the object level, requires more space on the system Make sure that the customer is aware that although Oracle 10g RMAN has significantly improved its feature functionality, when it comes to protecting their Oracle database, BMC Recovery Manager is still the No. 1 choice because of the following reasons: > Ease of Use Extracting a table from a physical backup Duplicating a database to a remote server SLA-based management Standard look and feel for heterogeneous environments > Guided Recovery RMAN has no similar capability making recovery using RMAN a major pain point > Superior Performance BMC Recovery manager beats RMAN in terms of both backup and recovery performance quite significantly > Optimizing Storage Usage Compression Integrated expiration mechanism that allows copies outside of recovery window to be expired. This mechanism is supported with all storage vendors From time to time, every product requires customer support. BMC Software has a team of recovery experts that help customers resolve problems regardless of their severity or cause. BMC Software customer support is recognized as one of the best in the industry. Our database support team will work with you to resolve database problems and provide guidance on Oracle and associated storage solutions.
