WHAT:

Curiosity House Books is honoured to host this incredible display of illustrations from this year's nominated Blue Spruce titles, says Jenn Hubbs from Curiosity House Books. Classic picture books are treasured by children and adults alike not only for wonderful stories, but also because of beautiful illustrations that tell a story of a thousand words in one picture. From simple pen and ink sketches to full colour watercolours and oils, children's picture book illustrators are rare artists who create miniature masterpieces on every page. In 2012, the Canadian National Exhibition hosted the 10th Anniversary of Blue Spruce Award Program and over 70 pieces of original artwork were displayed for over 50,000 people. The event was so successful that this year, OLA decided to create a touring exhibit to generate support for the nominated illustrators work across Ontario. The Blue Spring Award program brings recently published Canadian childrens picture books to children in kindergarten to Grade 2. For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books. We hope that everyone will enjoy this opportunity to see the artwork up close, and that they will look at this year's nominees with fresh eyes and admiration, says Hubbs.

The Forest of Reading is the largest recreational reading program of its kind in Canada, with more than 250,000 participants each year. The OLAs Forest of Reading offers eight reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. Committees of library practitioners select the nominated titles and readers vote for the winners.
