“The ethics of eating animals” Michael Pollan points out the main arguments presented by the people practicing animal rights. Here the author looks at the facets of vegetarianism and the issues that people face while consuming flesh. Pollan puts focus on various standards of vegetarianism but finally concludes that showing respect to the animals significantly plays an effective role in a person’s eating habit. Pollan states that if we look into the eyes of the dying animals we would find a “Being without a soul” which is a mere “subject of life”

Summary In the chapter, The ethics of eating animals Michael Pollan points out the main arguments presented by the people practicing animal rights. Here the author looks at the facets of vegetarianism and the issues that people face while consuming flesh. Pollan puts focus on various standards of vegetarianism but finally concludes that showing respect to the animals significantly plays an effective role in a persons eating habit. Pollan states that if we look into the eyes of the dying animals we would find a Being without a soul which is a mere subject of life (Pollan, 2007, p.332). The author further states that when the animals get raised up by industrial food producing units, they undergo severe sufferings by getting treated like objects, within the boundaries of a compressed cage. The hogs tail is slashed at the time of their birth and the chicken does not get adequate space to expand its wings. Pollan believes that these creatures experience pain even more while they are alive than during the time of their death. Apart from the supports from the arguments stated by the animal rights practitioners, the writer also discovers defying instances that can be drawn from the approaches of the real organic farms like the Polyface Farm (Pollan , 2007, p.319). There the animals spend their days in a relatively happy way, which is healthier to a great extent than the life spent by the animals staying in the wild. The farm owners make the process of slaying much transparent which offers the animals a peaceful death as they get adequately honored during their living days. Pollan concludes by saying that the process of animal slaughter and animal consumption itself creates natural and progressing state which cannot be considered as unethical. However unethical is the industrial process of raising and butchering animals.

Body Paragraphs It is evident from the entire writing that the author has enough credibility to establish a rational in his points. The author sincerely discussed the issue from different perspectives so that it doesnt seem controversial or biased. Also the writing is quite interesting as it offers the readers a different viewpoint to think about a topic which they had never considered to be so important. If a person starts reading the initial parts of the chapter, he/she will be bound to continue till the conclusion as the writer has presented different perceptions that act as the food for thought for the readers. He raised several questions like Wouldnt life in the wild be worse for these creatures? and Why should we treat animals any more ethically than they treat one another? (Pollan , 2007, p.310) genuinely made the readers give the topic a serious thought. Finally we can state that Pollan has conducted genuine studies for arriving at the conclusions and the statements are not merely from his own thoughts. We can find evidence when Pollan refers to the practice followed by the Polyface Farm (Pollan , 2007, p.319). Conclusion Thus we can conclude that animals should also be treated with honor and they should be allowed the freedom to enjoy their life while they are alive. As they serve us on a regular basis during our lunch and dinner times, its our duty to make their life comfortable so that they can get a peaceful death.
