Vizag Tourist Attractions
The Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Rose Hill, built is 1864 in also a place
of interest to the tourists. The church is on Three hillocks, i.e, on the three peaks of Eastern Ghat
mountain range. lt is adjacent to port and can be reached by route No. 13 bus to GPO from Collectors
Chowk.
In Durgakonda, one may visit the mosque dedicated to Ishak of Madina & the Venkateswar Temple built by
Capt Blacknoor in 1886 at Venkateshakonda.
Rushikonda:
There is another beach at the end ofthe city called Rishikonda
Beach. It is 8 km away from rly stn in somewhat quiet and
deserted surroundings. In the backdrop of Eastern Ghat
mountain, the milieu of tribal traditions, sandy beach with
Tumarisk trees on the side with, hills on the other side and blue
foamy sea in front is a bonus to the tourists. Punnami
Rishikonda Beach Resort is on the beach. Buses, autos
and taxis are available.
Bhemunipatnam:
Beyond Rishikonda along Beach Road further north is one of the finest place Bheemunipatnam in
Visakhapatnam, The natural beauty is unique. Bheemunipatnam is a place where river Gostani has merged
into thesea emerging from Eastern Ghat. The name is derived from Bheem', the 2nd brother of Pandava.
The city buses, autos, taxis, travel to Bheemunipatnam 25 km away to the N-East of the city. The route is
so beautiful as if the vehicles play hide and seek game with the ocean. Buses from 28 km away
Vijayanagaram also arrive here. Bheemunipatnam is also called Vimili. One will relish the past in this
deserted surroundings in the midst of calm and quiet golden beach, fishermen's daily activities, the light
houses of ISZS, to see the relics of erstwhile Dutch port-city and fort. Along with boating, opportunities
for water-sports are also available. From top of the hill Nrisingha Temple founded by Bhecm during
Dolphins Nose:
Behind the Venkateswar Temple, crossing the Narabhagedda river
by launch & climbing 380 steps and going down the slope,
beyond Navy (about 1 hr journey) is LightHouse on 358 metre
hill.From 174 m high Dolphins Nose point, permission is granted
on Saturday and Sunday to climb up the Light House.
From the top, the blue ocean and city look absolutely attractive.
Light House sends signals to the ships at a distance of 64 km.
These are also sharks in the sea. Yaroda Giri, i.e, the hills have
reached sea in the shape of a Dolphin, Hence the name Dolphins' nose. There is a Durga mandir in
the island. Tourists may enjoy ajoy-ride by launch in the sea from Yaroda Jetty.
Ramakrishna Beach:
However 3 km from the city centre, Waltair's Ramakrishnra Beach
(Mission Beach) is best of the lot. The beach starts from port
area in south where mountain and ocean have merged into each
other. lt extends upto Bhudha Park in north beyond Bishakhu
Museum. In between of them a Kali Temple was built by the

initiative of Badal Banerjee on 18 October, 1984.
Kailasagiri:
lf one moves to the
north along Beach Road and ahead of Appu Ghar, one reaches
Kailashgiri, i.e, Mount Kailash at a height of 304 metres. Tourists
have to get on the buses from Road Transport Complex and travel
around 10 km to reach the foot-hills of Kailash and from there use
the stairs to climb up to the peak. The auto service is also
available at Rs 5060. Taxis however can take one to the top
using the hilly round road, ln the midst of quiet, peaceful and
tranquil natural surroundings Kailashgiri appears to be a virtual heaven. The blue sea has surrounded three
sides with sprawling golden beach, It seems that mountain has leancd on the seathe blue water and blue
sky have merged into each other and created an aesthetic beauty, The city also looks beautiful from the hill
top. There is a disneyland like park on the mountain. Immediately after the welcome to Kailashgiri Gate,
there is twin idols ofShiva-Parvati & a restaurant. Kailashgiri with its 100 acre area is an ideal picnic spot.
Srec Kailnsh Girishwar temple is on hilly road & Appu Ghar' is in the foot-hills on the beach.
Simhachalam:
One of the most exquisitely sculpted shrines of Andhra Pradesh,
Simhachalam temple is situated 16 km from Vizag among thickly
wooded hills. The beautifully-carved 16-pillared Natya mantapa
and the 96-pillared Kalyana mantapa bear testimony to the
architectural brilliance of the temple. The image of the presiding
deity, Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy, is covered by a thick layer
of sandalwood paste.
The Vuda Park:
The Vudu park named after Mr. N.T. Rama Rao, the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. The park is
popularly known as Vuda Park is a crowd puller which has boating facility, dancing musical fountains,
skating ring, a gymnasium and a offerspleasure rides on horses and camels.
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park:
Like any other city zoos Vizag also have Zoological park known as
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. It is situated in between the
National Highway 5 and the Beach road. It spreads over an area of
625 acres and exhibits about 750 animals belonging to about 90-
95 species.
Borra Caves:
Around 90 km from Vizag is Borra Caves house. Spactacular
millions year old stalagmite and stalactite formations, standing as
a testimonial to its pristine glory.
Tyda:
Tyda is a small village on the Eastern Ghats. Its on the way to
Araku from Vizag. Tyda is around 75 kms away from Vizag. This
place is full of its natural beauty of flora and fauna.
AP Tourism department in association with the Department of
Forests has established the Jungle Bells Nature Camp which is an
Eco Tourism Resort. The camp provides trekking, hiking and bird
watching with great view of Eastern Ghat. Tyda is a must see
place for nature lovers.
Submarine Museum:
To 1 km south of Visakha Museum is Submarine Museum. The technicalities of lndia's FirstSubmarine ship
Kalabari( 1967 l 996) are shown here. Timings, Saturday and Sunday, 15-20:00 hrs ticket Rs 25. 0n
otherdays, 16-20:00 hrs. The fishing harbour was built in 1978 at cost of Rs 4crore is an added attraction.

1. SIMHACHALAM
Simhachalam or the 'Lion's Hill' is 16 km away from
Visakhapatnam. It is an important Hindu Pilgrim Center,
known for the Varaha Lakshmi Narasimhaswami Temple.
The 11th century temple is amongst the most important
shrines or Lord Vishnu in the country. The presiding deity of
the shrine is Lord Narasimha - a combination of the Varaha
and the Narasimha incarnations of Vishnu. The main deity is
always covered with sandal paste and the real shape of the
deity can only be seen during 'Chandanayatra Festival'
(March-April). The Shrine is also noted for its excellent
architecture.
2. KAILASAGIRI
The Charming Hill on the seafront, sprawled over 100 acres of hill area, and rising 304 Mts
above Sea Level, presents a breath taking scenic view, especially towards Bheemili.It has been
developed as an attractive picnic spot. View points with roof and cement seats are located at different
places on the hill to enjoy the serene atmosphere and scenic beauty & the whole city can be viewed in a
panorama through seven vantage points on this location. The magnificent Shiv Parvathi statues with lighted
mountains in front are worth seeing. Sankaram, Chakram & Namam fully lighted in the night are visible
from almost all parts of the city.
3. BHEEMUNIPATNAMORBHEEMILI
The historical town is set on the confluence or river Gosthani and Bay of Bengal. One can see
temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha atop a big laterite hill. According to a legend Bhima oneof five
pandava brothers of Mahabharta epic killed demon bakasura and installed this shrine. It is also known for
the 17th century ruins of a Dutch Fort and Settlement. A Cemetery here has some tombs, embossed with
the skull-and-cross bones motif of the sea pirates. The beach here is quite calm and considered to be the
safest for the Swimmers. A drive on the beach road from Visakhapatnam to Bheemunipatnam is quite

SATYANARAYANA SWAMY TEMPLE
The Famous Hindu Pilgrim center is known for Sri Vara Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy Temple on the
sacred Ratnagiri hill and the four metre high representation of the Hindu Trinity. The Structure of the main
temple represents a chariot with four wheels. It is believed that the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled on
performing Vrata (fasting) over here. The chief festival days are Bhishma Ekadasi (Jan. / Feb..),
Kalyanotsavam &
Vysaka Ekadasi (Apr./ May).
5. ARUKA VALLEY
The Picturesque valley on the Eastern
Ghats, about 115 KM. from Visakhapatnam is
popularly known as Andhra's Ooty. The fertile
valley extends over an area of 36 sq .km. and is
rich inflora and flora. The scenic landscape,
bracing climate , orchards, silvery streams
attracts tourists from far and wide, The valley is
inhabited by 17 colorful tribes, still untouched by
modern civilization and is a favourite outdoor
location for the Telugu film makers.
The famous attraction of Aruku valley is
the 1 million year old Borra Caves which are
about 90 km from Visakhapatnam, The caves
are spread over an area of 2 square Kilometers.
The caves were formed as a result of the action
of the waters of Gosthani riveron the limestone
terrain and has resulted into fascinating stalagmite
and stalactite structures.
6. RAMAKRISHNA BEACH
The magnificent beach sprawls over the
largest part of the Sea Front and is the most
popular site i the city. The Ramakrishna mission
is located nearby and there is also and imposing KALI TEMPLE near the beach. The Aquarium here is
an another attraction of the beach. Plans are on to upgrade this into an Oceanarium.
7. INDIRAGANDHI ZOOLOGICAL PARK
A trip to Indira Gandhi Zoo Park is never boring which considered as of the India's largest in-
door Zoo park of its kind. Located near Bay of Bengal and surrounded by Visakha Vally, this Zoo Park
features a cast of thousands! Their stars includes the Cat Complex where you can see the entire cat family
with Lions, Bengal tigers, Jaguars, Leopards etc. A Special Mini-Train was installed at the Indira
Priyadarshini Zoological Park to facilitate people to watch the wild life in a open top train which runs of
rubber wheels.
Nearly Eighty Species numbering Eight Hundred animals are present in the zoo. The well planned

layout of the zoo has different sections for
primates, carnivores, lesser carnivores, small
mammals, ungulates and birds. The Birds
encloser includes all kinds of birds and
peacocks. There is a Deer Safari available for
the visitors.
The zoo is open all the days except
Mondays.
The primates comprise various monkeys
- the common Langur, Rhesus monkey, Bonnet
Monkey and also includes certain other exotic
fauna like Mandrills, Olive Baboons & Sacred
Baboons.The Himalayan Black bear and the
Sloth bear in the bear complex are housed in
large moated enclosures.
The Hippopotamus is a special attraction
to the Zoo. The Crocodile complex has all the
three Indian Crocodile species. The Reptile
section has Pythons, Snakes, Land Tortoises,
Terrapins, Water Monitor Lizards, Monitor
Lizards etc. Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Spotted
Deer, Nilgai, Barking Deer and Thamin Deer are
the collection in Herbivores section.
A varied collection of birds from the
Eastern Ghats in the large walk-through aviaries

8. SRI VENKATESWARA SWAMY KONDA
The important hillock of ht city has temple
dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, According to the
Telugu inscriptions, a british soldier Captain Black
moor built, this temple in 1886. From here one can
view the port channel, which was the entrance of the
inner harbour for ships and liners.
9. TYDA NATURE CAMP
It is about 75 kms from Visakhapatnam on
the Aruku road and had camping facilities at jungle
Bells, which provides an enchanting experience to
the tourists. The region is rich in flora nd fauna. The
main attractions are rock climbing,trekking and
target shooting with bow and arrows, Even the language of the jungle is taught like identification of calls,
marks etc. as well as understanding interesting features of various flora and fauna o prevalent in the
Eastern Ghats, It is a very unique experience to stay in the log huts and tents set in tribal environs.
10. RUSHIKONDA BEACH
Down the coast towards Bhimili is Rushikonda Hill ("the Sugarloaf Hill") and beach. The beach is
ideal for surfing and swimming.
Rushikonda is a thickly covered hill located at a distance of 13kms. from Visakhapatnam on the
Visakhapatnam- Bheemunipatnam beach road. The steep hill slopes upward from Rishikonda beach
which is one of Visakhapatnam's loveliest beaches. Golden, unspoiled sands quenched by the sun-
drenched waters of a tranquil sea, a well appointed 36 room tourist lodge, individual rental cottages, a
restaurant and other amenities in the tourist complex, make Rishikonda even more inviting
If you are a water sports freak then, the golden beach of Rushikonda is the beach for you. You
can spend hours water skiing & wind surfing. One of the interesting aspects here is that even though the
wells are near the sea they do not contain saline water. Sri Sapta Rusheswara Temple of 14th century
surrounded by seven hills is located here.

The most conspicuous landmark in Vizag is Dolphin's Nose, a huge rock 357 mt hight
promontory jutting out into the sea and very like the nose of the mammal. It also shelters the harbour,
from where manganese and iron ore are shipped out. The nation's powerful beacon of the lighthouse
directs ships 65 kms away.
12 ROSS HILL (KANYAMARYKONDA)
It is the Highest hill on the Eastern Ghats and is named after Mr. Ross, a prominent personality
who built a house on this hill in 1864. The house was later converted into a Roman Catholic Church and
named 'Our Lady of the sacred Heart'. The Ross Hill affords excellent views of the Ship Building Yard.
13. APPIKONDA
Appikonda is a small village located 18-kms from Visakhapatnam at the cost of the Bay of
Bengal. History speaks that it is at this village that Kapila Maha Muni has installed the idol of
Somalingeswara Swamy and thus the name - Kapilakonda which was over the ages changed to
Apillakonda and further to Appikonda.
The Lord Shiva temple here contains inscriptions dating back to 12th Century AD. There was a
life-size bull at the temple that was carved out of Black Stone. Every years Shiva Rathri is celebrated with
much devotion

14. MUDASARLOVA PARK
Mudsarlova Park is located at a distance 5 km. from Vishakhapatnam, at the vicinity of Lake surrounded
by hills and Palm Trees.
The site consists of park, several picinig spots, wide lawns, fountains, beautiful flower gardens, different
types of trees. birds and peacocks in cages.
One of the main attraction of this park is scenic Golf Course Club.
15 THOTLA KONDA
In the same district of Visakhapatnam, 16 kms along the picturesque Vizag-Bhimili road lies Thotlakonda,
where a number of stupas, viharas and chaityas belonging to the Hinayana school were found. A unique
discovery providing evidence of maritime trade during that period was Satavahana coins bearing on the
obverse of a ship with two masts, anchored to the shore. The site can be approached via the road running
along the coastline between Visakhapatnam city and Bheemunipatnam (Bhimili), the second oldest
municipality in the country.
16 VUDA PARK
Vuda Park, also known as Taraka Rama Park, is one of the prime attractions in Visakhapatnam.
It is a beautiful park right on the Sun-n-Sea beach with boating and swimming facilities, roller skating rink
(Consult the master for training 9.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m) , artificial caves, beautiful long lawns, flower
gardens, and a children's park. Playpen for children - 40 Children can play at a time with 3000 plastic
balls and with boxing bags. (Free).
One of the main attractions of the park is the Musical Fountain with a huge gallery to rest and take
in the beauty. (at 6.30 p.m. Rs.5/-).
You can utilize the VUDA Health Club (Rs.250/- monthly) and Swimming pool (swimming
permitted for Rs.5/-) which are avilable at Vuda park. The centeral lake in the park offers boating, Boat
club (boating permitted for Rs.20/-)
Vaisakha Kala Vedika Trust (Free) (conducts classical music & dance everyday in the evening
from 6 p.m.) Every evening cultural programs such as classical music, dance, and poetry are conducted at
the Visakhi Kalavedika open auditorium. For those who go for picnicing, there are a variety of restaurants
and food stalls.
17 KEERTANA VANAMU
This fine beach resort has been developed by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority
(VUDA) on the splendid Visakhapatnam - Bheemunipatnam beach road. The resort has a rustic
ambience with landscape gardens & coconut grooves a restaurant and amphitheater.

How To Reach
Ramakrishna Beach
R.K.Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Visakhapatnam, famous for locals
hanging out during hot summers. Tourists take a deep plunge in waters or surf.
Swimming, sun bathing, beach volleyball are popular activities on the RK Beach. It
is also the best known for the INS Kursura Submarine Museum for public display.
There is Kali Temple at R.K. Beach
Yarada beach
Yarada is a beautiful beach for tourists. It is a perfect place for hang out. Located
close to Vizag, the beachy-rich hotspot offers soft golden sands to trawl on. There
are plenty of picturesque hills with the Bay of Bengal that all attract lots of tourists
here. Tourists come all the way through Yarada village behind the dolphin nose to
this private beach. Agrigold collects a fee of 30 Rupees to enter. Bring your own
food. Buses are available for Yarada Beach. You can hire a cab to go there.
Bhimili
It is a tourist spot, about 25 km from the city of Visakhapatnam. The place used to
be a small village also called Bheemunipatnam. There is a village where remains
of a Portuguese church and Dutch cemeteries are there.
Kambalakonda Sanctuary
Kambalakonda Sanctuary is a gorgeous national park and Indian Leopard species
indicator. The evergreen forest is under the control of Andhra Pradesh Forest
Department. It is about 20-25 minutes drive from the city center. There is a
nominal entrance fee of 10 Rupees per adult.

Kailasagiri
Kailasagiri Park at a height of 360 feet facing the east coast is a beautiful tourist
attraction, offering a panoramic view and serene ambience in Visakhapatnam. It is
spread over 100 acres on a hilltop yet gives opportunity for plenty of leisure
activities. Major attractions of the park include Floral Clock, Shiva Parvathi statue,
Jungle Trails, Art Gallery, Shanti Ashram, Children Play Park, Toy Train, Conference
Hall, Titanic View Point, Gliding Base Point, Shanku Chakra Naama and Telescopic
Point.
War Memorial
There is a 1971 Indo Pak war memorial in remembrance of Indian victory over
Pakistan 1971. There is a fighter plane, a tank and a few models of missiles
reserved as exhibits. There is no entry fee. It is situated on the Beach Road,
opposite to the Submarine Museum.
Simhachalam
This place is a must-see on a trip to Visakhapatnam. This beautiful Hindu temple is
dedicated to the incarnation of Vishnu. It is located 15 km from the city of
Visakhapatnam. The temple refers to the period of the Chola and Chalukya styles of
architecture.
Bojjana Konda
It is about 40 km from Visakhapatnam. Buddhist monuments dated from 200 BC to
700 AD, rock-cut caves and numerous groups of monolithic dagobas are major
attractions. The chamber of the cave is rectangular in shape. It is divided into 20
compartments. Each is further divided by four cross rocks of 16 massive pillars.
Bavikonda, Thotlakonda, Pavurallakonda and Bojjannakonda are heritage sites of
the UNESCO.

VISAKHAPATNAM
Visakhapatnam or Vizag as popularly known and called is major industrial town as well as major tourist hub of
Andhra Pradesh. Named af ter the God of velour, Visakha, Visakhapatnam was a f ishing village under Ashoka's
Kalinga empire, say, around 260 BC. During the 15th century it became part of Vijayanagar empire. The British
converted it into a port. Today Vizag is the India's largest shipyard. A well-known landmark in the town is
Dolphin's Nose, a rocky promontory. Ramakrishna beach and Rishikonda are two popular beaches. Ninety km
f rom Visakhapatnam is Borrox Caves, on way to Araku valley, by bus. The caves are one million years old.
They have stalactite and stalagmite f ormations. Visakhapatnam is well-connected by air to Hyderabad,
Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Calcutta, Delhi etc. There are trains and buses to all major towns. Hindustan
Shipyard, as well as the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The city, once a small f ishing village, gained cultural and
political importance. For the tourist, the most outstanding f eature of Vizag are its wonderf ul beaches. Unlike
more well-known beach destinations, Vizag presents no problems of overcrowding. In f act, instead of wading
through hordes of f ellow tourists looking f or the best spot on the beach, you practically have a huge section to
yourself .


HOW TO REACH
By Air - Vizag is well connected to the major cities like Bombay, Calcutta, Hyderabad and Madras. There
regular f lights by Indian Airlines and Jet Airways.
By Rail - Visakhapatnam is well connected to the major cities with some express and regular trains. It is the
center point f or the Trains which goes between Chennai & Howra and Howra & Secunderabad. Few express
trains are listed here :: Cormondal Express Chennai/Howra Mail Chennai/Howra, Falknama Express, Godawari
Express, Konark Express, Link Express, Bangalore Express, East Cost Express, Howra/Chennai Mail, Gawhati
Express, H. Nizamuddin Express, Okha - Puri Express, Swarna Jayanthi Express, Ratnachal Express, Bokaro
Express etc.
By Road - National Highway No.5 (Howra to Chennai) passes through Visakhapatnam. The Visakhpatnam to
Steel Plant - Anakapalli Road is most modern 4 Line Highway spans 45 Kms. The APS RTC runs buses which
connects major cities to Visakhaptnam and the cities in the neighboring states Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.
WHEN TO GO
Best time to travel Visakhapatnam is between September and March.
WHAT TO SEE

Borra Caves - These limestone caves were f ormed as a result of the
action of the Gosthani river. Due to the pressure exerted by the river
water on the mineral deposits, the lime stones dissolved and gradually
solidif y to f orm the irregularly shaped stalagmites f ormed.

Bhimili - (Once Dutch Settlement) A small town on the coast line that holds
its reputation f or India's f irst municipality. There are many Buddhist
settlements of yestee years like totla konda, bavi konda etc


Kailasagiri - Kailasagiri is located on a hilltop and is a must to see place f or
all people visiting Visakhapatnam. The charming hill on the seaf ront,
exudes a mind blowing picturesque view, especially towards
Bheemunipatnam.


Rishikonda Beach - At a distance of 8 km f rom Visakhapatnam is the
Rishikonda Beach, a golden, virgin beach, caressed by the sun-kissed
sea. The beach is an ideal place to laze around.


Ramakrishna Beach - One of the most alluring beaches on the Eastern
Coast is the Ramakrishna beach, which is a f avourite haunt f or tourists
visiting Visakhapatnam.


Indira Gandhi Zoological Park - The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is
situated in Visakhapatnam amidst the picturesque eastern ghats of India,
enclosed by hills on either sides and Bay of Bengal on the east.


Visakhapatnam also have other tourist attractions like, one of the most beautif ul beaches of India, Kailashgiri,
and some exotic parks by the side of the beach, of cource f riendly people. There is lot to shop in
visakhapatnam, like toys f rom Etikoppaka, tribla arts in Araku creations of Sea shells etc. Vizag doesn't have
many good eating places but have some good places ,try eating some specialties like Biryani in Kamat, Tif f ins in
Sai Ram Parlours, South indian f ood is good at the most of the places.
WHERE TO EAT
There are f ew good restaurants in Vizag. Swagath Restaurant, Main Rd near Poorna Market, has good cheap
f ood. There are two good restaurants at the Hotel Daspalla, one South Indian and the Vaisakhi Restaurant,
which serves North Indian cuisine.
